Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Kansas City Chiefs Agree to Terms with Kicker Dave Rayner

**UPDATE** The Star confirms the Rayner signing. Adam Teicher also said that the Chiefs plan to put Justin Medlock on the practice squad if he clears waivers. That means someone has to come off of the practice squad...Sippio? Actually, I'm not really sure how that would work roster wise.

The news come via Rotoworld and the NFL Network but nothing official out of the front office.

Rayner lost his kicking job in Green Bay after he was beat out by 2007 draft pick Mason Crosby. Current kicker Justin Medlock was only a miss or two away from losing his job. It appears now that he has.

I think we gave up on Medlock too early if this news turns out be true. He deserved at least another game to prove his worth. Seems like Herm and the crew decided before yesterday's game that if Medlock missed a gimme kick, he would lose his starting spot. Rayner was one of the many kickers the Chiefs worked out last week.

I'll confirm this when/if it becomes official.

Short lived Medlock
Nice to know you.  I'll take a veteran any day.

Herm and Co.
must have zero confidence in Medlock.

Our Packers blog
Acme Packing Company, had this to say about Rayner back on April 1st:
I kid because it is April 1st, but the Packers really suck on special teams. K Dave Rayner was in the bottom ten in field goal %, hey look, its Janikowski at the bottom, and despite his reputation as a good kickoff guy, he had few touchbacks that I can remember.

Random thought
Put Medlock on the practice squad and bring up Sippio to take over one of the now vacant WR spots.

Pressure
How would you feel if, as a rookie, your boss brought in six other dudes to interview for your job... on your FIRST day?

RE
Like I needed to make every 30 yard kick that came my way. I know what you're saying though.

Welcome to the site.

lol
Well... yeah! And he should! 30 yarders are "gimmes."

I'm just sayin' that THAT messes with a kids head. I'm not surprised he choked.

I do hope that Herm starts trying out some receivers, though. Put the fear into our receiving core!

Hes a kicker...
Kickers are a different variety of player though, if a draft pick WR doesnt perform right away its called a "learning process", kickers dont have this luxury since there are so many out there at about the same skill level or better.

Agreed
That sounds like the smart idea, we used a draft pick might at well condition him to get better (crossing fingers.)

Tynes looked good last night...

RE
That "welcome" above was supposed to go here.

I can hear faint calls for Bobby Sippio...

Maybe Mel Kiper isn't such an idiot after all
Remember the draft last April?

Mason Crosby's name is scrolling across the bottom of the screen from about the 3rd round on as one of the top 5 values in the draft according to Mel Kiper.

Kiper is sitting there shaking his head wondering aloud why someone doesn't take him.

Medlock is the first kicker taken, in the 5th. Crosby lasts until the 6th round.

Good job, Chefs! Crosby was right there for you and you didn't take him.

I'm sure Medlock will have a rewarding career banging kicks off the netting in the AFL, though.

Someone will pick him up
He's young and was drafted high and did well in college.

I doubt he gets picked up
I'm not sure but I doubt many practice team players are kickers.  He will probably just be a free agent until the next kicker gets cut then he will try out for that team.

This is just random, but
why wouldn't we take a chance on Mike Vanderjagt? I know the guy had an awful year last year, but he was one of the most accurate kickers in the league in the years before last. Where's Nick the Kick when you need him?

I've read a few articles on this
I guess he just lost it.  Obviously, being a kicker is just as much, if not more, about being mentally stable as it is being physically talented.  I guess he just lost that edge he had after those Indy/NE games.  Too bad, he woulda fit in well around here--greatest regular season accuracy but chokes in the playoffs.

Thoughts
When Stover was kicking they showed Vanderjagt still has the best career FG% but he was unsigned at this time and I wondered why they didn't even give him a tryout at least. I figured it was a mental thing, plus he has a penchant for going bonkers (ie throwing his helmet after missing a kick etc etc.)

I just dont have ultra confidence in Raynoe either. Where's Gary Anderson these days....
