My Stab at the Kansas City Chiefs 53 Man Roster

Before we get into the cuts, did anyone notice the Chiefs' desperation in selling some of these tickets? KCChiefs.com had a splash page up yesterday and today promoting ticket packages. Also, during last night's game, there was a scrolling marquee at the bottom of the screen promoting Chiefs tickets. I guess when you've handcuffed yourself to the Chiefs soldout record as much as Carl Peterson has, you live and die with it.

*Note: Red is for the players who are getting cut, yellow for the practice squad and the blue for the PUP list. Take a look over and let me know if I've made any obvious errors. Special teams is pretty much set so I'm not worrying about that. Also, I'm pretty sure Patrice Majondo-Mwamba is an international player exemption that doesn't count towards the roster.

OFFENSE

WR 18 Samie Parker 80 Jeff Webb 82 Dwayne Bowe 9 Ean Randolph 85 Eddie Drummond
WR 87 Eddie Kennison 81 Chris Hannon 14 Brad Ekwerekwu 8 Bobby Sippio
QB 11 Damon Huard 12 Brodie Croyle 1 Casey Printers 15 Jeff Terrell
RB 27 Larry Johnson 26 Michael Bennett 21 Kolby Smith 38 Marcus O'Keith 39 Derrick Ross 31 Priest Holmes
FB 84 Kris Wilson 46 Boomer Grigsby 30 Gilbert Harris
LT 77 Damion McIntosh 71 Will Svitek
LG 54 Brian Waters 65 Herb Taylor 72 James Newby
C 62 Casey Wiegmann 64 Rudy Niswanger 73 Rob Hunt
RG 76 John Welbourn 61 Tre Stallings
RT 60 Chris Terry 74 Kyle Turley
TE 88 Tony Gonzalez 89 Jason Dunn 84 Kris Wilson 47 Michael Allan 48 Keith Willis

DEFENSE

LE 91 Tamba Hali 96 Jimmy Wilkerson
LT 95 Ron Edwards 92 James Reed 65 Patrice Majondo-Mwamba
RT 70 Alfonso Boone 93 Tank Tyler 73 Kiki Gonzalez
RE 69 Jared Allen 90 Turk McBride 72 Montez Murphy 61 Michael Heard
LOLB 56 Derrick Johnson 97 Keyaron Fox 57 Nick Reid
MLB 50 Napoleon Harris 52 William Kershaw 98 Nate Harris
ROLB 59 Donnie Edwards 99 Kendrell Bell 55 Rich Scanlon
LCB 24 Ty Law 39 Dimitri Patterson 35 Will Poole 40 Justin Phinisee
RCB 23 Patrick Surtain 20 Benny Sapp 34 Tyron Brackenridge
SS 49 Bernard Pollard 25 Greg Wesley 30 Marlon Fair
FS 44 Jarrad Page 47 Jon McGraw 29 Chad Williams

I think the addition of kick returner Eddie Drummond pretty much seals the practice squad fate of Jeff Webb and Ean Randolph. Webb and Randolph are both kick return guys first and receivers second. The addition of Drummond eliminates the return need, relegating Webb and Randolph to next year. Plus, I think the addition of Bobby Sippio would push those guys further down the WR depth chart anyway. Justin Phinisee is in the same boat. His return skills were part of the reason he was still around and with Drummond in, he's on the practice squad as well.

Michael Allan is potentially our TE of the future. Tony G doesn't have that many years left and his retirement in the next few years would coincide perfectly with the development of Allan.

Our starting linebackers are definitely set. Kendrell Bell's salary really prohibits him from being cut at the moment so he stays. Rich Scanlon can play all three LB positions so he's in as well. William Kershaw has had a pretty good preseason so he earns a spot as well. Nick Reid on the practice squad is a bit of a stretch but I gotta throw one local guy in.

No reason for three fullbacks. Bye bye Gilbert Harris. The Chiefs aren't cutting a "folk hero" with a mohawk.

Benny Sapp and Dimitri Patterson both earned their backup CB spots this preseason, with Sapp playing especially well last night. Jarrad Page had a few nice tackles last night but also missed a few, which means I'm still worried about him. I've said it before- Jon McGraw is a Herm guy. He'll be around.

I'm going to sit here and look at this chart throughout today. I'll note any changes I make. Cuts are by 3 pm 6 pm tomorrow. Any spots where you particularly agree or disagree?

Parker
What makes you think Sammie Parker makes this team?  I feel he has had more than a chance to prove himself and has crapped his pants everytime.  I think at the end of the day Webb has his spot.

Thats one where
I could go either way. I hate Parker too.

Samie Parker v. Jeff Webb
I think it's a lose-lose situation any way you look at it.

I hope Tyron Brackenridge makes the team.

From NFLPlayers.com on Bernard Pollard:

"Developed a love for computers from his father at a young age. He says he spends up to three or four hours a night on his computer looking at software and finding out how things work."

Didn't see that one coming.

Sippio will be cut
You show Sippio making the team, and I wish that were true. Can you tell us why you think that? I believe he is going to be cut due to bad information. On Hard Knocks Ray Farmer stated Sippio is slow, and Carl echoed that view at the end of the Rams game. That information is based on Sippio's workout at the combine where he ran a slow 4.69 in the 40. At later dates he ran a 4.45 and 4.37. Hannon ran a 4.2, but normally runs a 4.37, which is the same as Sippio. Oh well, nobody ever said things were fair in making the team, did they Herm?

Welcome to the site
I know Sippio hasn't shown much but I feel like in light of the other WRs we have, the Chiefs may think he's worth a shot. He looked alright last night.

I forgot to mention
that thats the most current depth chart up there too.

Boomer and Sippio sell tickets
I would love to see Sippio make this team.  Say it's third and eight.  Wouldn't you love to see Kennison, Bowe and Sippio as the three guys lined up you can count on to catch the ball and make a first down?

A Herm quote that I can't recall makes me think Webb is likely to remain as a receiver.  I hope Parker gets cut. The observation about him playing late into the game in the preseason was interesting, I thought, so maybe he could actually get cut.  I'd rather live with Ross's fumbles than Parker's drops.  I know... a fumble is a TO.

With Drummond in, Randolph's gone.  Unfortunately, the same is true of Phinisee, I'm afraid.  I like the way Phinisee returns kicks.

I think there's a chance somebody like Herb Taylor gets cut in favor of picking up someone else's o-line cuts.  Although I think the o-line would be harder to fit someone into the unit after no pre-season time.

Seems like it would be hard to cut Boomer, but if they really want to keep another linebacker or receiver, he could get squeezed out due to numbers, and his average play in the pre-season.  He can sure pop people, though, and one would hope he'd be around.  That leaping catch with bad ribs last week was gutsy.  Too bad about last night's drop.

Here's hoping both Boomer and Sippio make the 53.  As a fan, I want to see them play, and I think they're both tough guys who add great chemistry.  Sippio made a great catch last night with the defender's hands around the ball the whole time.  Not a highlight reel catch, but a touch catch.

Phinisee
I'd like to see Phinisee make it as well.  Dude was a straight thug at U of O.  Picture a school full of hippies with one dude walking around with gold grillz.  I'd like to keep as many PAC10, best conference in football, ballers on the squad but will give up Parker for Phinisee.

I really don't see Webb sticking around
unless Herm's son insists on it ;-)

Ross
is eligible for the practice squad so you can pretty easily switch him and O'Keith. I thought Ross was ineligible for some reason.

Allan and Phinisee
If they get put on the practice squad they'll get snatched up, especially Allan. I don't think there's any way the Chiefs can hide Allan there.

I would like to see Dunn cut
from everything I has read he has lost a little something blocking this camp.  I know he was injured but if he can't block he is useless.  Also this is the only way I see Grigsby staying around. I would also like to see Wesley and Parker cut.  It would be nice if Allan could make the team some how.  He just gets open and makes catches and it looks like the Chiefs will need all the help they can get in this department.

Final cuts
I know this won't happen because the Chiefs have too much invested in him, but the QB that ought to be put on the taxi squad or even cut is Croyle. He has shown nothing in preseason but awful play. Terrell has played a lot better.

by JGunn on Aug 31, 2007 6:32 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

but he was going against
equally crappy players.  Croyle could have looked good against third stringers. Croyle hopefully needs one more year of seasoning and if he does not get any better it will be time to think of getting a new young QB or looking at Printers to be the future.

i agree with most of it chris...
here are my thoughts:

--- webb is making this team. he is as much of a "herm guy" as mcgraw IMO, so they are both locks. i hope and pray that parker is the guy cut to make room for him in your thing, but i would bet it is sippio. i HATE receivers who cant catch, speed and all that cutsie-pie stuff is nice but you are worthless if you cant catch the ball.

--- which brings me to jason dunn. i love jason dunn, but (and i might be looking to much into this) him being on the 2nd floor while on PUP [hard knocks reference] might say something about how much herm likes him. i mean, if gonzalez was on PUP would he go up to the second floor? bad example, but what about someone like derrick johnson? i doubt it, and i think that dunn gets cut in favor of allan. again, dunn cant catch the ball and while we will need offensive line help, he isnt nearly as good at that as he used to be. i would much rather go into full on rebuild and keep allan over dunn, and i think herm agrees with me.

--- i absolutely LOVE the way phinisee returns punts. catches the ball, runs straight up field and usually runs over a guy or two. i think he might make the team purely based on that, but only if herm thinks we only need 5 WR's.

--- i like sending brackenridge to the practice squad. i really like the kid and i hope we can sneak him through, because he could be a future replacement for law/surtain with another year of seasoning. on a related note, ross is going to the practice squad IMO. he has all the tools to be a solid backup RB in this league, he just needs to learn how to hold on to the ball. o keith was ok but not nearly at the same level as ross IMO, so ross gets the practice squad slot.

--- i hate keeping scanlon. i know you are supposed to keep 7 LB's, but i would rather keep someone like phinsee to be a backup return man and special teams king than someone like scanlon. scanlon has never, ever impressed me and (being a kansas fan) i would rather see reid make the team than scanlon.

i think you did a great job overall, i cant wait for the final rosters to finally be announced.

Cuts, Sippio still there.
Rhonda Moss reported the following cuts:

Hannon, Randolph, Ekwerekwu

In the WR group that leaves Kennison, Bowe, Parker, Webb, Sippio, and Drummond.

by GarySpFc on Sep 1, 2007 7:24 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

thats shocking on hannon IMO
i thought he played better than webb in the preseason, maybe the best overall, so i am surprised.

oh well, as long as samie parker doesnt make the team i will be happy and with hannon getting cut, it will probably be for....sippio!

I agree
He played better than Webb. Maybe they just don't feel like he'll pan out.

Printers is gone
Just put the story up.

Analyzing
Don't sleep on Marlon Fair (SS), this kid showed alot of good potential during the pre-season and on Hard Knocks. He's a good tackler and he has a good hitting technique that would benefit the Chiefs tremendously. I would choose him for the practice squad to develop along with O'Keith(RB) and Phinisee (LCB).
