Predict the Kansas City Chiefs Record

Its prognostication time again at AP. With three preaseason games down, I figured now is as good a time as any. Here is a record prediction from April and here is one from the end of June. Unfortunately, my 10 and 6 record pick through Chiefs red-colored glasses has worsened.

  • @ Houston - W
  • @ Chicago - L
  • Minnesota - W
  • @ San Diego - L
  • Jacksonville - L
  • Cincy - L
  • @ Oakland - L
  • Green Bay - W
  • Denver - L
  • @ Indy - L
  • Oakland - W
  • San Diego - L
  • @ Denver - L
  • Tennessee - L
  • @ Detroit - W
  • @ New York Jets - W
I went from 10 wins and 6 losses to 6 wins and 10 losses. I know thats a dramatic turn around but it stems from our struggles on offense. The learning curve for Brodie Croyle and some of the younger guys appears that its going to last longer than expected.

For those of you shouting that the Chiefs are going to be 3 and 13 or something comical like that, you haven't been watching our defense play. Or you forgot that Larry Johnson is on this team.

This Chiefs team will break more than they bend this year but it will be at the expense of actually building a football team, instead of signing miscellaneous players who are two or three years past their prime.

Have at it. I can't imagine the Chiefs being above .500 after this preseason.

Note: I just had to say this after reading some commentary on the game. Can we please wait to condemn Brodie Croyle until after he's played a game with Larry Johnson in the backfield? Just one game?

I'd like to believe you about building a team
but the important thing to remember is that the players you bring in have to be young AND talented.  They fulfill the young part really well.  Talented....not so much

True true
I think Croyle and Bowe have the talent. Our young corners, especially Phinisee, have a chance to develop into good players. Michael Allan isn't bad at the TE position.

Where we don't have young talent is on the offensive line. I'm calling it right now that we draft an offensive lineman next year in the first round.

I couldn't disagree with you more
Croyle can do 15-20 yard passes.  That's it.  He has no sense of the long ball, and no touch on short passes.  Bowe seems to show all of the concentration he showed in his first 3 years at LSU...sometimes he gets it...sometimes he doesn't.

I see what you're saying
But keep in mind this is only the third PRE-season game. Lets give the team at least some chance to show us what they have during the regular season.

by Chris on Aug 24, 2007 9:01 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And I should mention
that we won't be building with just the players we have now. It will be a process over a few years. I like the way Herm drafts.

The Sky is NOT Falling
I'm interested to note that no one is picking up on the fact that our most important player this season may not be Larry Johnson.  Rather, it may be Damion McIntosh, our starting left tackle.

You cannot gage our season based upon our poor offense when he is not in the game.  Did you notice how often Will Svitek (his backup) got beat in last nights game?

The Sky is not falling yet.  Now, if McIntosh isn't back in time for the Texans, then I might jump on the 6 and 10 bandwagon.

But, man, not yet.

by MarkH on Aug 24, 2007 10:05 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I wouldn't say
a 6 and 10 season is saying the sky is falling. In fact, I'll probably change my mind again about our record right before the season. I can be finicky that way.

It looks pretty likely
that Croyle is going to have his fair share of struggles.  Even so, I have to agree that we should not be too eager to jump the gun on judging Croyle.

Was I dreaming when after the Croyle pick I heard boos from the home town fans?  It wasn't a majority, but it was easily audible.  That seems ridiculous to me for a number of reasons  1.  This is the PRESEASON.  2. Croyle has played about 1 full professional football game when you add up all of his quarters (mostly in the preseason). 3.  Everyone already knows he will make some youthful mistakes.  4. The Chiefs are trying to develop a quarterback for the first time since I've been alive.  5.  The Chiefs have only a negligible chance of winning the Superbowl.

BOOOO development and having to deal with some growing pains?  Not saying Croyle is going to turn into a Brett Favre story (see, early career decision-making issues and growing pains mixed with a enormously talented arm), but its hard for me to believe that people aren't at least pulling for him enough so that they don't boo him when he makes a meaningless preseason mistake in a season for which there are lowered expectations.

Hmph
Well I was there & the crowd was pretty disgusted at the whole lot - they may have been taking it out on Croyle.
You play to win the game!

by tailgateandwin on Aug 25, 2007 9:09 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

agreed completely.
booing a rookie QB doesnt necessarily show off your football IQ. those were probably the same fans who booed trent green, after he was probably our second best QB throughout our entire franchise after lenny dawson.

even with huard starting, we are still going to struggle a ton on offense and hopefully i still wont hear any booing.

i dont think you should EVER boo your own team...

by rockchalk on Aug 25, 2007 9:28 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

5 and 11
I wish I could be optimistic but I can't shake the feeling that it's going to be a train wreck this year.

Booing Croyle is ridiculous.  He's only a rookie and almost all rookies struggle, ESPECIALLY when they are working some new linemen into the mix.

by Pauli on Aug 24, 2007 2:45 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No train wreck but not pretty
This is a 4-12 team.  Fine by me as long as 2 of those 4 come against Oakland.  The Chiefs will be in a position to pick in the top 5 and should have a shot at whoever next years standout tackle is.  That said, the first day of next years draft should be exclusively o-line and corner.

by Bill Grigsbys Cirrhosis on Aug 24, 2007 3:02 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

never a good sign
when the regular season hasn't even started and you're already talking about next years draft, but i can't fault you, i was doing the exact same thing last night while watching the game with a couple friends.  (we're hoping jake long #77, left tackle out of michigan is still available, yes we got that specific)

by Chiefs n Chopper on Aug 24, 2007 3:14 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yea, jake long and sam baker (usc)
are both excellent left tackles. we would be good to get either in the draft next year, it would make us a much better team.

this is how i see it, there is no way that we will win anything this year. at the very most we will sneak into the playoffs and lose in the first round. that is about a 1 in a billion chance too...

we need to put croyle in the starting QB position, we need to start building for 2008, 2009 and beyond. we could be a legitimate contender by 09 and make the playoffs next year if we can develop a QB, huard isnt that guy.

it would be a stupid stupid stupid decision to start huard this season, a very shortsighted one that could possibly set us back a year or more.

my prediction is 7-9, with us winning both games against oakland. i am slightly more optimistic, but we still wont be very good.

by rockchalk on Aug 25, 2007 1:35 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm gonna say 10-6
We will get D-Mac back in time for week 1 or 2, which we should be able to beat the Texans in week 1 w/o him.  LJ wants to be great and I don't see him breaking down at all this season, he WILL become more of a threat out of the backfield too.  Our defense will keep us in games all season, and once we get Kendall Gammon back as our long snapper(were gonna cut Douche and resign Kendall) our kicking woes will be solved.  Brodie given time not only to throw but also to develop will become an above average NFL QB.

Season ups and downs
@ Houston - L not together yet
@ Chicago - W 9-7, eat Grossman alive
Minnesota - W come from behind, Medlock winning kick
@ San Diego - L 17-20, we play well
Jacksonville - L no offense this game, bad day
Cincy - W 35-31 in first high scoring affair
@ Oakland - L - sorry, Oakland gels
Green Bay - W Broyle starts after Huard Oakland injury
Denver - L - hate to say it... bootleg city
@ Indy - W LJ runs for 150+ yards, Bowe 150+ yds
Oakland - W by more than 20 points, Huard returns
San Diego - W LT held to 70 yds, Phinisee 3rdQ punt return TD
@ Denver - L as we give up 200 yds rushing
Tennessee - W Mr. McNair: Meet Jared, Tamba, Tank and Alphonso
@ Detroit - W Calvin J. vs. D Bowe hype, Tony G 100+ yds, 3 TDs
@ New York Jets - W Chiefs win one for the Herm, 4 INTs from defense

After game by game guessing, Chiefs 10-6, with a strong end of season run once again.  Yep, there are some longshots -- like Indy.  Any given Sunday. =]

Brodie + Croyle
= Broyle  haha.  oops.
And it's not Mr. McNair - Mr. Vince for the Titans.

My preds.
I'm predicting us to go 9-7, still.

I don't think QB issues will plague us out of too many victories, and our defense should keep us in every game but a couple.

by Direckshun on Aug 26, 2007 1:09 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

5-11 or 6-10
depending on how good/bad the Jets are this season. This offense will be pathetic, but I'm not blaming Croyle. Huard is not the answer at QB. The only way we should be starting Huard is if they feel that we could make the playoffs. Newsflash for the Chiefs management: We're not making the playoffs! Anyhow, let the kid take his lumps. We'll never know if we don't give him a real chance. His arm isn't bad, his head is. The last time I checked, it's easier to fix a guy's head than his arm. Why we didn't pursue David Carr or Dante Culpepper just for insurance in case this happened is beyond me.

by royaldaddy on Aug 26, 2007 1:52 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I disagree.
"it's easier to fix a guy's head than his arm"

Jeff George, Ryan Leaf, Mike Vick, Tim Couch, Joey Harrington, Kyle Boller, etc...

Seems pretty easy to fix the QB's head.
