Kansas City Chiefs Preseason Game 2 Wrap Up

I missed the first half of the game and was only able to catch parts of the second half so I'll be watching the game sometime this weekend. Then I'll give a full report. For now, here are a few snippets of what happened in last night's 11 to 10 loss to the Miami Dolphins. The NFL gamecenter is here.

Miami edges Chiefs, but Croyle leads KC to a touchdown - The Star

Indeed, for a few magical moments, folks in Arrowhead were beginning to believe. The Chiefs celebrated in the end zone, fans danced in stands, Croyle pumped his fists, and it looked as if KC’s quarterback quandary had been solved.

And then, just like that, it all stopped.

"He threw that interception," said Edwards, shaking his head, "and it was like 'Whoooaaaa! Why did we do that?'"

Green, Brown manage better performances; Beck leads Dolphins rally - The Sun-Sentinel
There were no boos Thursday for Green, but there were plenty for the Chiefs' backups and especially the officials when they didn't reverse rookie quarterback John Beck's two-point conversion dive across the goal line that gave the Dolphins an 11-10 comeback victory Thursday night at a sweltering Arrowhead Stadium.

KC Chiefs Fanatic

If you subscribe to the Herm Edwards School of NFL Thought and Logic, you would be a proponent of three keys to winning football games: Defense, Ball Control, and Special Teams.
Sorry for the unorganized post this morning. I'll have some more thoughts once I finish watching the entire game.

I'll add a few comments
But keep in mind I only watched parts of the second half.

Casey Printers is having the best preseason at QB.

The offensive line looked horrible.

Justin Medlock was nervous but I think he's a keeper.

Derrick Ross fumbled again? Next please...

Ross was on the bubble to begin with
He's done now.  Did anyone ever hear of this issue coming up in NFL Europe?  It's hard to imagine the MVP having a fumbling problem...

Medlock will come around.  He's just got to get comfortable.

The Casey Printers comment is true but he'll never play.  Chris, do you remember his website?  Can you give us a link to the post you did on that a while ago?  It was hilarious.

His website
no longer exists. His modeling page linked to nothing.

My thoughts
Yes, Printhers looked the best, but he's also playing against guys who probably won't make an NFL team.

Croyle vs. Huard:
Huard looked like his typical self, a little stiff in the pocket, not really going to make any tight/tough passes in traffic, just trying to not lose the game/lose his chance to win the starting spot.  I was at the game, so I couldn't hear what the announcers were saying, or see replays, but it looked like to me Huard just focused on his primary receiver (usually TG), and if that wasn't available he looked flustered and didn't know what to do. And what was that pass to the Dolphins bench? That wasn't even close.  There were a couple plays where Huard had a man open in the flat that he could've just dumped it to, but he never looked that way, and it seemed like the Dolphins knew this.

With Brodie, as soon as he came in it seemed like the stadium became more excited and I think the team played with more energy.  Didn't know if he was still going up against Miami's 1st group guys, or if they were the backups, either way it still looked impressive. The int was stupid cause he had his man, he just floated it up there when he probably should have just fired it in there.  At least he was making some throws looking like he actually wanted the job, rather than looking like he was afraid to lose it.

Michael Allen: I think that's his name. I thought he was really impressive, and definitely looks capable of filling in for Dunn while he recovers.  Good to see he wasn't afraid of going through the middle or going up for a ball?exposing his body

Defense: Doesn't Miami have one of the worst o-lines in the league? If our starters weren't able to get much pressure against them, I'm starting to worry our defense is over-hyped, and definitely not a top 10 d like we were hoping for. Is the main idea of the cover 2 not allow anyone to get behind you and give the opposing team the open dump pass good for 7-8 yards? It seemed like that was there every play.

Medlock: On the radio I had heard mixed reports about his accuracy during camp, and last night seemed to confirm those.  With our kind of offense, you have to make those kicks, and if you can't make those in a preseason game when there's nothing on the line, how are you going to perform under real pressure? I have faith that he'll figure it out because he was able to do it in college, I just hope it's sooner rather than later.

Good point
We have to keep in mind that Printer's is going against the other team's 2nd or 3rd stringers typically.

my thoughts...
--- i would still love to have derrick ross on our practice squad, he had some pretty good runs before fumbling. he shouldnt make the 53 man roster, but another year of developing could do wonders for him...

--- casey printers has looked excellent in the preseason (besides the fumble, that was just horrible) and has probably locked up the 3rd QB job. im actually excited to have him as our 3rd QB, he probably wont play but if he continues to develop he could be a really good backup QB.

--- dmitri patterson has impressed me so far, he will probably make this team solely because of his performance. our corners will actually be pretty good IMO, patterson and brackenridge have both been much better than i would have thought, and sapp is a good blitzer and ST player.

--- the offensive line will be our downfall this season. it just doesnt look good, especially the tackles. the sooner damion mcintosh comes back the better, because svitek and turley and sampson and terry all look pretty bad.
