Open Thread - Draft Day

Its upon us ladies and gentlemen. I'm in sitting in Tennessee getting ready for what I guess I've been waiting for all these months. Nothing fancy on this post so lets just dive into the commentary. I'll be posting the AFC West picks here too. This page at NFL.com will keep you up to date on the picks as well.

**UPDATE** I am satisfied with picking Dwayne Bowe from LSU. Needed a great WR and I think we got one. I mentioned in the comment section that I can't really dedicate much time to writing today so anybody who wants to write up their thoughts on Bowe, by all means go ahead.

GO CHIEFS!!!!

3:34 pm The Chiefs select Dwayne Bowe, WR from LSU

3:20 pm Brady Quinn to Cleveland? Wow. What a draft so far. Chiefs are on the clock...

3:03 pm Do we take Quinn if he's there?

12:54 pm Dolphins take Ted Ginn Jr.??? WTF???

Oakland Raiders

  • Round 1 - Jamarcus Russell, QB from LSU

Denver Broncos

  • Round 1 - Jarvis Moss, DE from Florida

I want to see some trades!
The draft and trades is kind of like nascar and crashes. Its not the whole reason you watch it but its a damn large part of it.

Predictions for the next pick? When are we going to see Joe Thomas fishing?

And
Anybody else think that the Chiefs will actually go WR in the first round? I don't see it happening with  this coaching staff and front office.

Nahh
Offensive Line!!!

LJ is great but he has to have an offensive line to run behind & we are in some sorry ass shape.

By the way
I bought a new sprint phone (one of the fancy ones because I had a credit) and I'm sitting here with draft videos playing on my phone. It has great audio too. Thought I'd brag because I had the same candybar phone for about 7 years.

Brady Quinn
His girlfriend looks trashy.

Is he the one for Cleveland?

I forgot how boring this is.

KC will probably be around 2:30.

Nope - OT.

Miami takes a WR from Ohio State
They didn't take Brady Quinn. Is Green gone to Miami, then?  What would the Chiefs get in return?

by AirHead on Apr 28, 2007 12:56 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

teddy ginn jr
going to miami is TREMENDOUS news for us. that means they are set with trent as the starter, no way they came out of this with no brady AND no trent. they will probably draft someone like trent edwards, john beck (my personal favorite) or drew stanton and have trent mentor them.

i think we will be able to get a 4th round pick out of it, making us have a pick in every round...

by rockchalk on Apr 28, 2007 1:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

something to think about
i would love to pick up more day 1 picks, and with miami still possibly wanting brady quinn we could have a trade like this:

miami gets: trent green, #23 overall pick

kansas city gets: #40 pick and #60 pick

that way we would have 3 second round picks to take an offensive linemen, a wr and even a cb.

i would love to do something like that, but i dont think it will happen...

by rockchalk on Apr 28, 2007 1:45 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

if alan branch is still available
should we take him at #23? he has had problems with inconsistency among other things (like weight). sound like anyone we know (ryan sims...)? still, that was at #6 and this is at #23 and he has the potential of being a HUGE taker-up-of-space for napoleon, dj and donnie edwards to make plenty of tackles...

Hey
I just got back from Chuck E. Cheese. Incredible time. Where do we stand?

by Chris Thorman on Apr 28, 2007 2:59 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Why?
Posting after the fact now, but what would have been the purpose in that?

I'm still new to following football with more than a passing interest and so the answer may be obvious to everyone but me.

QB of the Future
There are a couple of possibilities if Quinn had been available.
  1.  We get the "Quarterback of the Future" - a #1 pick who has played for a former NFL coach that won Super Bowls, etc. . . . The only announcer I trust on the ESPN coverage is Jaworski & he said that Quinn had faults but they were all correctable.
  2.  We pull off super-trade like Dallas.  Get to pick 13 slots later but also get a #1 next year.  It's not like Cleveland is going to turn it around in a year, so it will be an early pick next year.
But who knows.

I listened to the Herm & Carl presser & it sounds like it was not much in play & they got the guy Herm wanted.

I'm satisfied.

Getting what Herm wanted
I'm glad to hear that.

by AirHead on Apr 28, 2007 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i dont know what i would do
but im positive that herm wont. herm LOVES brodie and thinks that he is the qb of the future. i want cb chris houston out of arkansas at ths slot, i think he could be a stud and eventually fill in for ty law in 08.

i would also be happy with brady, dt alan branch, wr dwayne bowe or wr robert meachem. houston is probably going to be the pick though in my mind...

Good pick, bad pick?
The Offensive line needs some help.  Badly.

I'm satisfied
Unfortunately, I'm running around with the girlfriend's little brother so I haven't been watching as much as I could have been.

I'm pumped for Bowe to be on our team. This draft has been so nutty that I'm not surprised we didn't go defense.

Sporadic posting throughout the weekend.

GO CHIEFS!!!!

People who say the draft is overrated
Just don't get it. What an exciting first round.

by Chris Thorman on Apr 28, 2007 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Can you believe that
Harrell went that high? I mean the guy is good but he went from a second round pick to #16 overall in about 2 and a half weeks.

by Chris Thorman on Apr 28, 2007 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

DeWayne Bowe
Scary pick to me.I fear another Sylvester Morris, but we'll see.I was disappointed that we didn't get Quinn.
We're still paying the price for hiring Dick Vermiel.

by anderson24 on Apr 28, 2007 4:16 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think you had to take
Quinn if he was there. You can't just pass up a guy like that. Besides, Croyle was only a third round pick anyway. Its not like a whole lot has been invested in him.

Bowe is worth a shot for sure. I still can't believe that the most number of mock drafts picked it dead on for the Chiefs.

by Chris Thorman on Apr 28, 2007 4:28 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I like Bowe,
but, I think we will regret not throwing a fifth rounder to Jacksonville to get Quin.

turk mcbride?
seems like a bit of a reach to me, but i trust herman edwards after what he did last season.

we do have a need at d line, hopefully turk works out a la bernard pollard...

by rockchalk on Apr 28, 2007 7:38 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Mcbride
I don't know about this one.It seems like an obscure pick. He's versatile, but he didn't even start much at Tennessee.
We're still paying the price for hiring Dick Vermiel.

by anderson24 on Apr 28, 2007 8:31 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

McBride
Horrible pick, not big enough to play tackle and not good enough to play end.  He'll be a solid backup to our current players.  What pains me is the value on the board in positions we need.  Even on the d-line Ray McDonald looks much more tallented and not as many issues.

by iguy2000 on Apr 28, 2007 8:40 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

if i were picking
i would have taken someone like daymeion hughes of cal, brandon mebane of cal among others. still, i wouldnt have picked bernard pollard in a million years last year, and i have developed COMPLETE trust in herm and bill kuharic after last season's draft. something about me just believes that turk and tank will work out, and while not being studs, could be our two starting d-tackles in a couple of years. look, im happy with what we got just because of dwayne bowe. sure, i think we could have gotten better value than turk mcbride and tank tyler in those positions, i will cheer these two guys on and hope that they can turn out to be starters in the future.

our defensive tackle position is taken care of for awhile now though, with james reed, ron edwards, alfonso boone, tank tyler and turk mcbride all in the 5 man rotation. plus, it allows jimmy wilkerson to move as the 3rd defensive end and possible starter in the first four games of the season when jared allen is suspended.

you can tell ive been up all day, all of these sentences are run ons but ive been watching this so long that i dont care anymore.......

Carl Peterson on ESPN moments ago
"If the season started tomorrow, Trent Green would be our starting QB."

I guess this means he's not going anywhere at the moment.  Unless we get two 6th round picks from Miami.  (Does the draft go on forever?)

Trading LJ is not happening, either.

(Why am I watching the 4th round of the NFL draft? Why?)

Bobby Beatherd said we had the worst draft
I like Bowe alot, but after that I kind of agree.  Turk should be a good backup and who knows which Tank will show up.  I like the RB from the ville, but not really sure why we drafted a kicker, or a tight end.  We needed OL and D-backs and didn't adress either, unless you count the undersized tackle from TCU.  We should have drafted Kalil in the 2nd, Daymeion Hughes in the 3rd, stuck with Kolby in the 5thand with our next 5th draft Studdard out of Texas, if we needed a kicker draft Mason Crosby in the 6th, and in the 7th I wish we would have drafted that fat little bowling ball out of Hawaii Nate IIaoa.  Overall our draft sucked and we did nothing to help our situation, with the exception of drafting Bowem, and adding D-line depth.  I'm giving us a big fat D, but I hope I'm wrong.

by stevedebergHOF on Apr 29, 2007 7:30 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Unfortunately,
You're probably not wrong.  What if last years draft was just as bad as we thought, but our defensive tallent was so bad that the medeocre players we picked look like studs to us?
