Trent Green and the Dolphins Getting Closer to a Deal

A new contract for Trent Green is holding up a possible deal that would send the former Pro Bowl quarterback from Kansas City to the Miami Dolphins, sources said Wednesday.

The Dolphins, like the Chiefs, want Green to take a major pay cut from the $7.2, $7.7 and $9.2 million the 36-year-old veteran is due over the next three seasons, the final three years on his current contract. Miami doesn't want to pay Green, who will turn 37 in July, much more than the NFL veteran's minimum, which is $820,000 in 2007.

Ouch. That is quite the paycut. Later in the article, it says that the Dolphins are interested in trading their second, 7th round pick for Trent Green. I get the impression that this deal with Miami is nearly imminent. I think Trent Green will just have to become comfortable with making a whole lot less money next year. Obviously, because of the hit a team would take on the salary cap by keeping Green, teams are reluctant to give up much of anything for him. To go from making almost $7 million next year (I think at least) to making the league minimum in a trade for the second 7th round pick a team has is just depressing. Trent's time in Kansas City was coming to an end soon. I'm sad to see it crumble, yes crumble, apart so quickly.

I almost forgot to mention that the Dolphins have interest in David Carr as well. And it becomes clearer why Trent Green is really not worth that much anymore. The Dolphins have another veteran QB to sign if they so choose. Trent really can't catch a break, can he?
