Morning Update (Empty Arrowhead Edition)

  • Tony Gonzalez, on if the Chiefs wanted to trade him -- "Whatever they decide to do, I would think it’s in the best interests of the team, and at this point, that’s fine. After losing seven games in a row, I feel like, ‘Do whatever you’ve got to do, and I’ll get over it.’"

  • The Star and the Chiefs, still going at it.

  • I read on a message board that Jack Harry said that the real attendance of Sunday's game was around 43,000. KC Chiefs Fanatic has more on the lack of support the Chiefs are getting at Arrowhead Stadium.

  • For those talking about Jake Long around here, check out this scouting report.

  • Lions fans may be just as bitter as Chiefs fans this year.

  • I read this article about our home record and was reminded that the Chiefs haven't scored in the fourth quarter in six straight games.
I almost get the feeling that Tony Gonzalez wants to be traded right now. He tried to play it off as a sacrificial act if he left the Chiefs but it didn't come off as too sincere. If thats what Tony Gonzalez wants, I say do it for him. The Chiefs owe that to him, at the very least. He's been the epitome of talent and class at the NFL level since he came into the league.

On the topic of low stadium attendance, how many of you were offered or had tickets to last Sunday's game but didn't go?

Had tickets got more.
Knowing that some of my friends wouldn't want to go I scooped up all the tickets I could from them, in addition to my 3 season tickets.  Ended up going with the family and took people that don't usually get to go.  I used all 6 tickets I had but ended up giving away one parking pass.  Hopefully, that move will bring some positive karma to this team.

I know it would be expensive
but I am becoming more convinced that Long would be a great Right Tackle...though who ever drafts them in the first round?

That's where
they would start him for his first year, then move him over to the left side.

I don't get that
Here's what Tony says about losing "the old team."

We have to do whatever it takes. It's going to hurt some people's feelings. It's going to break up some relationships. It's not going to happen any other way.

"Whatever they decide to do, I would think it's in the best interests of the team, and at this point, that's fine. After losing seven games in a row, I feel like, `Do whatever you've got to do, and I'll get over it.'

He suggests later that he would understand if they needed to, they could trade him.  I don't hear any hint of "trade me" talk in his tone at all.  All he's doing is talking about accepting the realities of the new direction things are going here.  A very positive article I thought.  Of course, I'm only reading the black part of what's written there.

I think we all have a tendency to jump on the speculation wagon this time of year.  For instance, the so called "Jets trade" pffft!  I'll believe that when I see it and not a moment sooner.  Herm going to UCLA, yeah, right!  It causes a stir to say things like "Tony's talking about wanting to be traded!" but for the most part, things aren't really all that dramatic around here.  I think one big trade that would surprise some people would be if LJ were traded to the Jets for their first rounder.

Hilarious
Hopefully it will keep the bashers occupied.

Yeah
I actually felt just a slight hint of remorse for Solari, given how much more effective the offensive play calling was against the Titans.

Given 2 pretty good tickets, plus parking pass
and was planning on attending, but come Sunday morning, just didn't feel like going to watch our team play a decent first half and then lose it in the second half.  Mid-way through the third quarter I realized that I could predict the future and immediately went out and bought some lottery tickets, I'll let you all know how much I win...

Trading T.G.?
I'm officially out on that deal. If he were to be traded, he's probably worth a 2nd rounder. Also, not too sure if Kris Wilson is able to fill the shoes.

Huh?
  1.  Unless Tony begs to leave (which I don't think he will) there is NO WAY we will trade him...it is very rare for a great player to play with a team for his whole career and it is something special when it happens.
  2.  Tony is worth more than a 2nd rounder to any team except those few with other great TE's (Chargers...maybe the Browns...nope, just the Chargers - Gates and Gonzalez are in a league of their own).

Let's set aside
for a moment the monumentous cap problems involved with trading him, and the instant backlash against trading the face of the franchise, and the inherent issues with figuring out how much he's worth.

Hasn't he earned it? Even if he won't, because it doesn't make sense, doesn't he deserve to play for a contender? I think he does.

Side question, does anyone know what our attendance was like in similar years? Did we really show up that strong in the first two Vermeil years? Anyone? Bueller?

Not criticising Herm Edwards for anything since December '07.

I don't have data to back this up
but the answer is no...the attendance was not fantastic then either (though some games may have been a little higher just because people were almost guaranteed some TD's)...Kansas City has the best fans somewhat due to the fact that there is a better ratio of fans to bandwagoners than in almost any other NFL cities (I bet Green Bay has us beat) and diehard fans equals season tickets which means that even in rough seasons, games are still televised.

Speaking of bandwagoners, which team currently receiving hand-jobs from sportscasters had two home games blacked out earlier in the season?  The Jaguars...now those are some fans...jack-asses.

Tony
I'd like for him to get a chance at a ring, something I'm not sure he can get here unless he sticks around for a few more years.  It would be sad to see him go, though.

But, I agree with MAWK that a deal would never happen, or at least one that would be fair to the Chiefs.  We locked him up to a big money contract that would be really tough to trade considering his age.
