The Rumors Begin: Jets/Chiefs Off Season Trade?

Hat tips to both KC Chiefs Fanatic and Arrowhead Addict, who were on this way before I was.

How does this one measure up on the trade value chart?

JetNation.com has learned that the Jets have had conversations with the Kansas City Chiefs about a blockbuster trade. The Jets would send both Chad Pennington and Laveranues Coles to Kansas City in exchange for the Chiefs 1st round pick. The Jets would also receive a 4th rounder and a possible 2nd day pick in the 2009 draft. The 2009 pick would be tied in some way to performance. We are told that a deal is essentially in place and it will be announced in the off-season.

Coles did have 91 catches last season but I can't see the Chiefs making this trade. We'd be trading our first round pick, a potentially high first round pick, for a backup QB and a solid no. 2 receiver. Seems to me like we can find a better deal from some other team. Are people obsessed with Jets/Chiefs trade talk because of Herm's history there or what?

The reason

it's a concern is because in New York, he was adamant about Pennington. Through the injuries. All of them. Through the questionable throws. All of them. Through the losses. All of them. He stuck by Pennington. So why wouldn't he look to his pet in a situation without a QB he loves? I'm not convinced he's sold on Brodie (I'm not saying he absolutely should be either. I am, but I can totally see people's questioning the kid).

That said, if this trade goes through... I don't know what I'll do. I want to throw out things like "I won't watch the Chiefs till Peterson and Edwards are gone" or "I'll be done with being a Chiefs fan" but those are both empty threats and I know it. Plus, I'd want to at least keep an open mind and give it a shot...

But it would make it hard to watch this team. Mostly because HD isn't helpful when you're vomiting out of your eyes.

Not criticising Herm Edwards for anything since December '07.

Pennington has no value as an NFL quarterback

therefore, there's at least a 50 50 chance the Chiefs pull the trigger...

With the

whispers and speculation Edwards may be fired, do you really think he will go against what he has said all along that you build through the draft? Why bring in a injury prone limp armed qb and a receiver that has that mileage on him?

Yes

I think it is highly unlikely that we want Pennington badly enough to trade for him just to insure that somebody else doesn't grab him in free agency before we would (not that we should even consider Charmin-Arm)...Coles is also too old to be appealing...next year would be his 9th season which would make him what, 29 or 30 depending on when he came out of college. That is not the age to pick up a WR...unless he works out like Jerry Rice did, he will start to decline over the next few years.

Would Brett Favre do any better with the offensive line we have now? I say no way, lets get some linemen via the draft!

YOu know I remember Dick Vermeil being in the footage of Hard Knocks...Do you think he still has Carl's ear on draft and trade items???

Brett Favre

would do way, way, way, way better with the offensive line we have now. There are quarterbacks that can overcome the line's play. We just don't have any of them. I'm not saying linemen aren't important, they're vital. But they're not everything.

Does everyone around here realize that if we draft Long, we're not going to be 11-5 all of a sudden?

Not criticising Herm Edwards for anything since December '07.

We won't take Long

There are alot of decent linemen in this draft. The Chiefs will be trading down from their top 10 1st round pick for a later 1st rounder and another pick later in the draft.

I can almost guarantee it.

The two things we need most are linemen and cornerbacks and there are quite a few decent ones likely to still be available even into the second and third rounds.

And MAWK, stop thinking about next year being 11-5. The days of bandaid fixing from year to year are gone. We have to strip this thing down bare and build up from there, otherwise we'll be stuck in the mediocrity we've been in for the last 20 years forever.

Oh no

I totally agree. And I don't have any problem with us being sub .500 next year, as long as there's improvement, I'd rather have another full strong draft.

But there seems to be this sentiment around here that as long as we draft a linemen, he'll anchor the rest of the line and we'll be awesome.

I was, just this once, actually agreeing with you.

That trade makes absolutely no sense. If they throw away the first early first round pick they've had in decades for THAT I'll...I don't even know what I'll do. It's hard for me to comprehend them actually doing that let alone my reaction when I find out they did it.

old man & the mike sweeny qb are now way worth a top ten (maybe top five) draft pick. Hopefully the King will be dethroned before thats even a consideration

If Herm brings in all his old has beens to the chiefs we should all rebel as fans! Never have I been so concerned about the chiefs offseason! Chiefs fans be ready for another season of brown bags and empty home games if this happens!!
