Grading the Kansas City Chiefs Offense Through Seven Games

Let us know your own grades through seven games in the comment section. Also, Arrowhead Addict has a similar bye week post up. Check it out.

Quarterback

Damon Huard is who we thought he was- a back up quarterback and not much more. The idea of Damon Huard starting for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2007 was swallowed by the fans under the assumption that the aging quarterback was a "game manager", a "care-taker". In other words, a quarterback who wasn't going to wow us but wasn't going to lose us the game either. Well, it ain't 2006 anymore. Huard already has seven interceptions in seven games this season, which is six more than he had last year in only one more game.

The care-taker description of Damon Huard has been debunked. He rarely looks to make a great play and makes great plays even less than that. With the pass protection as poor as its been and with Huard panicking in the pocket, I'm surprised the Chiefs don't have more fumbles lost by the quarterback. One interesting stat is that Damon Huard had five lost fumbles last year and only one this year. He also fumbled it nine times last year and has only fumbled it twice in 2007.

But, despite our criticisms, Damon Huard is winning football games. A 4-3 record at the bye week is nothing to snicker at with these Chiefs. With the running game as horrible as its been, with the special teams never giving the offense good field position, the Chiefs should not have four wins. That's why, despite what empirical observations may bring, Damon Huard should remain the starting quarterback for the Chiefs. If the team starts losing, bring in the kid. That's how deep my loyalty to Damon Huard lies.

Grade: C+

Running Game

Larry, Larry, Larry. You hold out during the preseason for the biggest contract in Kansas City Chiefs history. You say you want to be a leader and that you understand that with a huge contract comes responsibility. But you bitch when the Chiefs are losing. You bitch when the Chiefs are winning. Your emotions harm the team during games. You are not a leader. You stew by yourself and refuse to talk to the media.

Okay, lets back it up for a second. I can understand why Larry Johnson doesn't want to talk to the media. The Kansas City media has routinely written negative things about Larry Johnson and, in my opinion, never really gave him a chance to change from the 2003 "diaper" impression Dick Vermeil helped create. The traditional media has their story each week on Larry. They include the diaper comment, something about the east coast, have to mention Jay-Z and probably something about how Larry's gotten paid and is now content to half-ass his way through the rest of his NFL career. They don't care to delve deeper. They just needs words on a page.

I don't buy all that talk about Larry. He doesn't have to talk to the media. But, if he wants to claim to be a leader of this team and bear the brunt of the responsibility when the Chiefs win and lose like he said he would, he does need to talk to the media. He does need to play some sort of leadership role on this team. But he's not. And he probably never will. Fool me once....

No fullback. A swiss cheese offensive line. A running back who looks to place blame on others before himself. No wonder the Chiefs running game is ranked 29th in the league. It appears Priest Holmes will provide a boost but he's not blocking on the line of scrimmage every down. The running game issues will get worse before they get better.

Grade: D

Tight Ends

This is an easy one. Tony Gonzalez is the greatest tight end ever and is having one of the greatest seasons of his career. Not even the poor pass protection of the old man Jason Dunn is enough to lose a letter in this grade.

Grade: A

Wide Receivers

Like many of you, I gasped a little when Eddie Kennison came up lame on the first play of the season with a pulled hamstring. I was never very big on Kennison but, at the time, he was our no. 1 receiver. Now, most fans probably don't even care if Eddie comes back to play this season.

It's the D. Bowe show in Kansas City now. For the season, Bowe has 29 catches for 499 yards and three touchdowns. Chiefs fans have never, never been this excited about a rookie wide reciever seven games into the season. Bowe is a legitimate threat to break the game open before and after he catches the ball. Besides Adrian Peterson and LB Patrick Willis, you could argue that Dwayne Bowe is having the best season of any of the 2007 first rounders.

Jeff Webb and Samie Parker combine to form one Dwayne Bowe in the box score. A combined 25 catches for 292 yards through seven games solidify their spots behind Bowe on the depth chart. Each one has had a couple of great catches, Webb especially. After catching four balls for 48 yards in the first game of the season, Parker has disappeared. Regardless, these guys are now supplemental to Dwayne Bowe and Tony Gonzalez.

Grade: B+

Offensive Line

According to Football Outsiders, the Chiefs run blocking ranks dead last in the league. The bright spot about our o-line? They only rank 22nd in terms of pass protection.

Blow it all up. Replace everyone except for Brian Waters and possibly Damion McIntosh. This line needs a fullback and an overhaul. They are unable to produce first downs in the run game and are giving up nearly three sacks a game to opposing defenses.

I won't bore you with more stuff we've already gone over with the offensive line. They're just horrible.

Grade: F

Heard...
some radio blowhard saying the Chiefs had been close to dealing for DeAngelo Hall.  Anyone hear any details on this?  Would that have been for Bennett and a pick possibly?  Bonehead move if we didn't pull the trigger on that.

Not sure about the details
Or if it was even true. But I heard the rumor of the Chiefs giving up a second-round 2008 draft pick for Hall.

The guy is amazing. I would love to have him without the attitude though. Talk about a cancer...

with the way our D is playing...
Hall would have to be considered a luxury.  And it's pretty bad policy to add disaffected pieces to the team for luxury's sake.  Plus, did anyone see the CIN-ATL preseason game?  Chad Johnson made Hall look stupid.

Now, if some team had an offer for a malcontent, stalwart O-lineman, that might be worth listening to :)

On the right sidebar
go through some of the older diaries, someone wrote something on this a little while ago...

Remember....
Grunhard, Szott, and Alt?

Any chance we could get Marty to help scout O-linemen?

You're telling me their wasn't some overweight center still rolling around in the 5th round when we picked up Medlock?

I'm just sayin "if you're gonna grun, might as well GRUN-HARD!

I think
the ratings are pretty good, but i will give Huard a B just for the fact the offensive line got an F. That pretty much says there is no pass protection and thats important for any QB. I hope Sammy Parker is traded because hes been nothing for us as long as hes been here, he drops passes and his routes arent very good either. I think Larry is too emotional and is only worried about personal stats, thats why he wont block and just wants the big runs. And instead of worring about D-Hall mabye we should try to adress our offensive line issues, as far as i know Ty Law is still a good corner. He only had three picks against Payton Manning in one game, yeah lets replace him.     BRING IT!!!

But
Romo has about 500 more yards passing. Thats the kicker...

I wonder how good
Huard's completion percentage would be if Stonehands McDrops-the-ball Parker could actually catch...I know against the Raiders we had at least 5 dropped passes.

by PVChiefsfan on Oct 25, 2007 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Check out some cool stats
here.

The Chiefs WRs have dropped nine passes, which account for nearly 12% of Huard's incompletes.

Parker
I hate Sammie Parker more than anyone, but if you watch the games objectively, he has caught nearly everything close to him this year.

Still hope we get rid of him, just want to be fair.

by DJ on Oct 25, 2007 5:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

My bad
Parker has been doing much better...just not as involved as I would like the number 2 receiver to be.  Wilson, Johnson, and Webb were the droppers in the Oakland game weren't they?

by PVChiefsfan on Oct 26, 2007 7:53 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

hmmmm
The problem is half of Huards passes are to the line of scrimmage.

by DJ on Oct 25, 2007 5:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

hmmm
McIntosh has potential, but why ditch Wiegmann? he's been a consistently solid player from day one.

Otherwise, I agree, the rest are not fulfilling their potential.

It's still tough to call Huard a lost cause, the play of the line does impact his ability a lot.

However,  it's in scenarios like this a good quarterback will find ways to work around what he has.  He seems to be "stuck" in that he is not taking the extra steps to distinguish himself beyond that of an "average" QB.

As too the passes he has made that were not caught for interceptions,   Video has shown that it was on the exceptional skills of certain receivers that prevented those passes from being interceptions or incomplete.

Huard is not winning these games.  the defense is.

The Offensive players such a Tony G, D Bowe, Webb, etc are showing that they have come to play.  We have a good supporting cast that is talented enough to go all the way, but you need a central cast of O line and QB to get the ball to these guys to exploit defenses in a way we would love.

I think this is all frustrating because we are not seeing consistency on the team between the two sides.  either the QB has to step up, or the O line does to give the QB more space to do things.

I don't realistically see either happening in the near future, but if even one of these two were to, it would up the Chiefs play dramatically.

Just for fun
check out the predicted power rankings from before the season started...these guys are just a bit better than the weatherman.

That was great
They pegged the two easiest at the top.

But it goes South from there.

What they had to say about the QB situation in KC is about right on target.

Cheers!

You play to win the game!

huard sucks.
huards completion % is so high because he is unwilling to throw the ball downfield, so his dumpoffs to kris wilson and larry johnson boost his %.

our offense would be MUCH MUCH better with croyle IMO...

c+ is being generous.

bench huard. start croyle.

Think about this.
Other than the ROOKIE d-bo, what wide recievers do we have, or should i say does Damon have. Jeff Webb and, Sammie Parker ,thats not enough talent for Dan Marino to have good stats. I know if Kennison were healthy Huards number would be better. Once again loosing your number one reciever on the first play of the season could have an ill effect on the QBs numbers. Kennisons numbers have been good over the last couple of seasons and he will make a difference if he can get healthy. Anyone who thinks Kennison is a sub-par reciever hasent been watching much CHIEF football. Lets face it any time you bring in a snell like Sipio you have to be hurting at the reciever position. Yeah i know Kennison is getting old ,but his back-ups simply dont get the job done.  Its pretty much either Bowe or Gonzales, they account for 6 of the 7 touchdowns and the other was one Sammie Parker almost dropped. I wonder if defences even guard the left side of the field?     BRING IT!!!!

I agree on the Kennison part
we forget that even though he is old, he still catches a lot of balls...especially on third down, (something this team could use more of).  I'm not saying we would be up there with the Colts and crazy NE, but I have to believe that our offense would be a bit better with Kennison on the field.

my grades
qb: C+, huard hasn't really helped or hurt our offensive cause.  he is who he is, which is okay.

running game: D-, the only reason i don't give an F is bc the line is sharing the blame here.  LJ is still LJ, but without holes at all.

receivers: B-, dwayne bowe appears to be a star on the rise, but our offense still does not throw to him.  kennison has been hurt, and the only other guy who has proven he can catch the ball is jeff webb.  samie parker should be cut.

tight ends: B, gonzalez is having another good year, but these guys are part of the problem that is our offensive line and our run blocking.  do not forget this fact when we have to make a decision on jason dunn in the near future.

offensive line: D-, the run  blocking is the worst i can remember as a football fan of multiple teams.  i agree that waters and mcintosh should be the only guys kept here, although i think wiegmann is sabotaged by how horrible the right side is.  our pass blocking has been mediocre at best.  again the right side is mostly to blame.  don't forget the immobility of damon huard either.  he moves about as much as the tree in my front yard.

Do i smell *****
Well Kris wilson has 12 receptions in 7 games, thats less than 2 rec a game? And alot of those passes are for at least eight yards. So that statement is far from the truth.

Huard
Well do you give Huard a C+ due to playing poorly or lack of ability?

He's playing OK, but I think his ability is limited.  He's probably a little gunshy from the beating he's taking because of our garbage Offensive line.

If it weren't for the fact that he isn't the future of the team and I think we should be focusing on the future now, I would be ok with Huard.

My main gripes about him is all the dump off passes and throwing the ball 5 yards on 3rd down when they need 15 and the fact that he often tucks the ball away and takes the sack a little too easy. Not much presence in the pocket, especially compared to Trent Green.
