2012 NFL Mock Draft Goes Offensive Tackle (Again) For Chiefs

Photo

A new edition of SB Nation's 2012 NFL mock draft is out and to little surprise they have the Kansas City Chiefs selecting an offensive tackle -- Jonathan Martin out of Stanford. This of course would be a Barry Richardson replacement.

Here's what they said:

Chiefs Reportedly Find Their Offensive Line Coach

Last week reports out of New York said that the Kansas City Chiefs were interviewing the New York Giants' Jack Bicknell Jr. for their offensive line coaching job.

And this morning reports coming out of New York indicate the deal will get done. Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger reports the Chiefs are expected to hire Bicknell as their new offensive line coach. The Chiefs have not confirmed this news.

Bicknell was the Giants assistant offensive line coach under Pat Flaherty.

The position became available when Bill Muir, last year's offensive line coach (and offensive coordinator), retired. The Chiefs were planning on keeping Muir at offensive line coach if he didn't retire.

Bicknell is the brother of Bob Bicknell, who was previously an assistant on the Chiefs staff.

This leaves only a couple of spots to fill on the Chiefs staff -- assistant offensive line and receivers. Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel indicated he knew what he wanted to do at receivers coach so this appears to be the last big hire on the staff.

Randy Moss Wants To Come Back

Photo

The journey of Randy Moss continues. The former NFL receiver two seasons ago was traded from the New England Patriots to the Minnesota Vikings, who then released him before he was claimed by the Tennessee Titans. He hasn't played football in a year after announcing his retirement.

But now he says he wants to play again in 2012.

Moss took to USTREAM, which is a live video chat, and answered fans' questions, one of them being whether he'll return to the NFL. A snippet:

"Your boy is gonna come back and play some football, man. I'm very excited. Like I said, man, I just had a lot of things that I had to adjust in my life, man."

"Faith, family, and football, man. That's my M.O., bro. If one of those three is off balance, man, then you get a mad, disappointed, and sad Moss [...] hopefully I get on a team, man, and hopefully I can finish this thing the way I want to."

So...yeah. No, I don't think the Chiefs would sign him. But someone will. Who will that be?

Figuring Out The Changes Coming To Chiefs Offensive Line

Photo

We know there will be changes to the Kansas City Chiefs offensive line via the use of free agency and/or the 2012 NFL draft. GM Scott Pioli has indicated the Chiefs have to get better at offensive line so it's one of the areas I'm keeping an eye on the closest. The Chiefs last year in free agency were connected to a few offensive linemen, including a couple of offensive tackles, so I think they know work has to be done there.

Here's the offensive line depth chart ending the season (italics are free agents):

Breaking Down the Chiefs: Tyson Jackson

Photo

We've been here before, even though it seems like forever ago. In case you don't remember me, I'm MNchiefsfan, and I talk about the Chiefs sometimes

I'm going to cover a LOT of territory here, so no time for a decent intro (or even really an intro. I'm going to do more like an "in"). How do bullet points grab you?

- I'm breaking down some Chiefs players this offseason

- I'm doing this because before we really know what we "need" or what to expect next season, we need as much information as we can get on the guys we currently have playing for us.

- I base these breakdowns off basic stats, ProFootballFocus stats and game tape. A lot of game tape. At least a couple hundred snaps or I don't do the post (hence the amount of time between this post and the last one).

- I end each breakdown with a scale of 1 to 10 of "Replacement Need". 1 is a guy like DJ, who I wouldn't trade for anyone else in the league at his position. 10 Is a guy like... well, I don't want to hurt feelings. So I'll say it in code. 10 is like a guy whose name rhymes with Carry Prichardson (What do you mean my code sucks?).

- This is not for a more casual fan. This is long, in depth, and as detailed as I can possibly get. I'll try to lighten it up with a joke or two along the way, but this is for the hardcore fan that wants to know EXACTLY what T-Jax did this year. If that ain't you, move along (although I don't know how many fans like that are here on AP...)

Today's focus... Tyson Jackson. Yeah, we're going there. (h/t to Steve and Kalo for both helping me with my research process. You guys are men among boys. And h/t to NFL Rewind for allowing me to watch hundreds of snaps over and over. If you want to talk with authority about a player, you REALLY need to be able to do the legwork. All right, enough h/t love. Let's do this)

***** Late Addition: some have asked me to post a link to my breakdown on Dorsey. Find it here

Arrowheadlines: Chiefs News 2/13

Good morning...your Kansas City Chiefs news (and it's not much!).

Most people in Chicago spend their working hours contemplating relationships with family or friends. Some will take time to listen to music or a book on tape. Unfortuantely, for Spizzi, he can't stop thinking of one game.

"I guarantee you they beat Kansas City they make the playoffs. I guarantee you!" said Spizzi while pointing a shovel at the writer's face. "They lost 10-3. 10-3. You give me that team, I win that game. Seriously...I win that game."

Sunday Open Thread

Photo

As I'm sure you've heard, today is the first Sunday without NFL football since September. Normally, we'd be in the middle of our third or fourth game thread of the day but alas, no football is being played today.

Use this open thread to talk about whatever you want. How are you filling the time on Sundays now?

Chiefs Should Keep Close Watch On Saints Free Agency Situation

Photo

While the Chiefs have a couple of highly coveted free agent targets to take care of already, the New Orleans Saints also have a situation brewing with three names and (likely) not enough money for everyone. It's a situation in the Big Easy that a team like the Chiefs should pay close attention to.

The names involved are all major players: Drew Brees, Marques Colston and Carl Nicks. There's no doubt the team will negotiate a new long-term deal with its star quarterback. But the question marks come in when discussing Colston and Nicks. One is a star receiver who could become the main attraction in the open market. The other is a star guard who could also become the prime offensive lineman available.

Dan Pompei discussed Colston's situtation in today's Sunday Blitz at the National Football Post:
