2007 Preseason

My Stab at the Kansas City Chiefs 53 Man Roster

Before we get into the cuts, did anyone notice the Chiefs' desperation in selling some of these tickets? KCChiefs.com had a splash page up yesterday and today promoting ticket packages. Also, during last night's game, there was a scrolling marquee at the bottom of the screen promoting Chiefs tickets. I guess when you've handcuffed yourself to the Chiefs soldout record as much as Carl Peterson has, you live and die with it.

*Note: Red is for the players who are getting cut, yellow for the practice squad and the blue for the PUP list. Take a look over and let me know if I've made any obvious errors. Special teams is pretty much set so I'm not worrying about that. Also, I'm pretty sure Patrice Majondo-Mwamba is an international player exemption that doesn't count towards the roster.

OFFENSE

WR 18 Samie Parker 80 Jeff Webb 82 Dwayne Bowe 9 Ean Randolph 85 Eddie Drummond
WR 87 Eddie Kennison 81 Chris Hannon 14 Brad Ekwerekwu 8 Bobby Sippio
QB 11 Damon Huard 12 Brodie Croyle 1 Casey Printers 15 Jeff Terrell
RB 27 Larry Johnson 26 Michael Bennett 21 Kolby Smith 38 Marcus O'Keith 39 Derrick Ross 31 Priest Holmes
FB 84 Kris Wilson 46 Boomer Grigsby 30 Gilbert Harris
LT 77 Damion McIntosh 71 Will Svitek
LG 54 Brian Waters 65 Herb Taylor 72 James Newby
C 62 Casey Wiegmann 64 Rudy Niswanger 73 Rob Hunt
RG 76 John Welbourn 61 Tre Stallings
RT 60 Chris Terry 74 Kyle Turley
TE 88 Tony Gonzalez 89 Jason Dunn 84 Kris Wilson 47 Michael Allan 48 Keith Willis

DEFENSE

LE 91 Tamba Hali 96 Jimmy Wilkerson
LT 95 Ron Edwards 92 James Reed 65 Patrice Majondo-Mwamba
RT 70 Alfonso Boone 93 Tank Tyler 73 Kiki Gonzalez
RE 69 Jared Allen 90 Turk McBride 72 Montez Murphy 61 Michael Heard
LOLB 56 Derrick Johnson 97 Keyaron Fox 57 Nick Reid
MLB 50 Napoleon Harris 52 William Kershaw 98 Nate Harris
ROLB 59 Donnie Edwards 99 Kendrell Bell 55 Rich Scanlon
LCB 24 Ty Law 39 Dimitri Patterson 35 Will Poole 40 Justin Phinisee
RCB 23 Patrick Surtain 20 Benny Sapp 34 Tyron Brackenridge
SS 49 Bernard Pollard 25 Greg Wesley 30 Marlon Fair
FS 44 Jarrad Page 47 Jon McGraw 29 Chad Williams

I think the addition of kick returner Eddie Drummond pretty much seals the practice squad fate of Jeff Webb and Ean Randolph. Webb and Randolph are both kick return guys first and receivers second. The addition of Drummond eliminates the return need, relegating Webb and Randolph to next year. Plus, I think the addition of Bobby Sippio would push those guys further down the WR depth chart anyway. Justin Phinisee is in the same boat. His return skills were part of the reason he was still around and with Drummond in, he's on the practice squad as well.

Michael Allan is potentially our TE of the future. Tony G doesn't have that many years left and his retirement in the next few years would coincide perfectly with the development of Allan.

Our starting linebackers are definitely set. Kendrell Bell's salary really prohibits him from being cut at the moment so he stays. Rich Scanlon can play all three LB positions so he's in as well. William Kershaw has had a pretty good preseason so he earns a spot as well. Nick Reid on the practice squad is a bit of a stretch but I gotta throw one local guy in.

No reason for three fullbacks. Bye bye Gilbert Harris. The Chiefs aren't cutting a "folk hero" with a mohawk.

Benny Sapp and Dimitri Patterson both earned their backup CB spots this preseason, with Sapp playing especially well last night. Jarrad Page had a few nice tackles last night but also missed a few, which means I'm still worried about him. I've said it before- Jon McGraw is a Herm guy. He'll be around.

I'm going to sit here and look at this chart throughout today. I'll note any changes I make. Cuts are by 3 pm 6 pm tomorrow. Any spots where you particularly agree or disagree?

Kansas City Chiefs Water Cooler Conversations

The final game of the preseason is tonight against the St. Louis Rams. Hardly any of the starters will be playing and besides Brodie Croyle starting the game, there won't be a whole lot to talk about. I've gathered some odd and quirky facts about some of the Kansas City Chiefs players so you can keep the conversation going at the office, on your couch or at the bar. Feel free to claim that you found these on your own. All of the info comes from the horribly outdated NFLPlayers.com.

Damon Huard

Nickname: Huey

Favorite movies: Risky Business, Stand By Me, Braveheart

Football heroes growing up: Dan Marino and John Elway (You have to be ****ing kidding me)

Few people know that: Huard worked for the co-founder of Microsoft (Paul Allen) his first year out of college

Larry Johnson

Favorite movie: Glory

Few people know that: Larry's a painter

Pre-game ritual: Listening to the Glory soundtrack

Nicknames: LJ and Big L

Tony Gonzalez

Craziest ambition: Act on Broadway

Autobiography would be called: Keepin' it Real

Favorite movie: Forrest Gump

Casey Wiegman

Few people know that: Casey's hometown of Parkersburg, IA, has had four NFL players come out of it

Favorite bands: Dave Matthews Band, Limp Bizkit, and Godsmack. Of course, Jimmy Buffet.

Nickname: Wigs

Patrick Surtain

Few people know that: Grew up with Juvenile, the rapper

Craziest ambition: To get a million dollars in singles and wallow in it

Hobbies: Sleeping and watching Sportscenter

Rod Gardner

Nicknames: Playboy, Sticky Fingers, Rod

Craziest ambition: Own a yacht

Dream car: Camry

So, Huey is a traitor; The Big L is deeper than we all thought; Tony G is a more than likely a diva; Wigs couldn't get any whiter; Patrick Surtain was makin' it rain before Pacman Jones; and former Chief Rod Gardner is probably closer to a buying a Camry than ever.

Damon Huard Will Not Play Against the Rams

Nothing serious though.

Q: Have you made a final decision whether QB Damon Huard is going to play?

EDWARDS: "He's not going to play."

Q: Is that an injury thing?

EDWARDS: "No, I'd say it's more of a precaution. If he had to play a game he could play, there is no doubt. I just want to keep him out of harms way."

I don't have much to add here other than the general wondering of what happens if Brodie Croyle has a huge game. I know he won't be installed as the starter but if Croyle does come up big against St. Louis on Thursday, that will just muddy the whole QB situation even more as the season wears on.

Kansas City Chiefs Announce Roster Cuts

Finally.

Kansas City placed G Chris Bober, FB Greg Hanoian, LB David Hicks and WR Maurice Price on Injured Reserve and terminated the contract of WR Rod Gardner. The Chiefs also released 9 players: T George Batiste, CB Michael Bragg, DE Chris Harris, WR Brent Little, CB Marcus Maxey, TE Mike Pinkard, T Ramiro Pruneda, WR Titus Ryan and T Kevin Sampson.
Some of those "cuts" have already been reported here at AP. The eight players that we were looking for are:
  • T George Batiste
  • G Chris Bober
  • LB David Hicks
  • CB Michael Bragg
  • FB Greg Hanoian
  • T Kevin Sampson
  • WR Maurice Price
  • WR Brent Little
Keep an eye on the depth chart. It hasn't been updated yet but it will be soon. We're still shaky on the right side of the offensive line (and everywhere else for that matter with the exception of Brian Waters) so the Kevin Sampson cut is a little bit surprising. Also, Michael Bragg seemed to have a slight leg up on a couple CBs but I guess not.

Nothing really shocking here Chiefs fans. By Saturday, 22 more players will be gone. I'll digest these and probably give my thoughts in the comment section.

Reggie Bush's Favorite Player Growing Up....

Was current Chiefs offensive lineman Kyle Turley. I found this interesting tidbit over at the FanHouse (Thanks MDS!). Check it out:

When he was a youngster living near the campus of San Diego State University, a young Aztecs football player lived in an apartment across the street and was drafted by an NFL team.

Bush knew him. And when the player was selected in the first round of the draft, Bush asked that the player bring back some team gear. The player signed the items and gave them to Bush.

Bush says he always remembered what Kyle Turley, the Saints' 1998 first-round pick, did for him, and Bush admits that was another lesson that stuck: take time out for others.

I always found it interesting how when you were a kid, even the smallest gestures by others could have a huge impact. Kyle Turley is pretty much defined by his on-the-field helmet throwing incident back in 2001. You can bet this story got .1% (for good reason) of the media play that his helmet tossing incident did. Once you get past the tattoos and the occasional temper flare up, I'm sure Kyle Turley is a pretty regular guy.

Cut Time: Who Do the Kansas City Chiefs Keep?

**UPDATE TUESDAY PM** The cuts have been announced.

New poll up. VOTE!

By tomorrow, the Chiefs will have to trim their roster down to 75 players which means 8 players currently on the roster will be gone. Then, on September 1st, the roster will be trimmed down to season standard of 53 players. That means that by the end of this week, the Chiefs will have gotten rid of 30 players. Before the Saints game, the Chiefs released WR Rod Gardner and WR Titus Ryan; TE Mike Pinkard; the Mexitackle Ramiro Pruneda; and defensive lineman Chris Harris and CB Marcus Maxey. Here are 8 players that have the possibility of getting cut tomorrow or by September 1st.

# Name Pos Born Exp Acquired
53 David Hicks LB 8/7/1984 R CFA-07
61 Michael Herd DE 05/24/1984 R CFA-07
15 Jeff Terrell QB 1/24/1985 R CFA-07
39 Derrick Ross RB 12/29/1983 2 FA-06
29 Chad Williams S 1/22/1979 6 FA-07
14 Brad Ekwerekwu WR 10/3/1985 R CFA-07
13 Brent Little WR 4/3/1983 1 FA-07
17 Maurice Price WR 9/11/1985 R CFA-07

Considering that the Chiefs will have to drop another 22 players by September 1st, there could be a lot of overlap deciding between the cuts tomorrow and the cuts on the 1st. Some of the guys will end up on the practice squad. Here's a little info on the practice squad from Wikipedia:

Each NFL team may keep up to eight members on their "practice squad" in addition to their 53-member main roster. They consist mostly of rookies who were cut in training camps and borderline NFL-caliber players. Both rookies and young veterans are eligible for the practice squad. However, a player cannot participate on the practice squad for more than two seasons. Practice squad players practice alongside regular roster players during the week; however they are not allowed to play in actual games.
Players credited with two or more NFL seasons are ineligible, which rules out Chad Williams and if I'm not mistaken Derrick Ross. I don't think Marcus O'Keith is that much better than Ross, if at all, but O'Keith doesn't fumble like Ross either. The other guys on the list are guys who made absolutely no noise in training camp or the preseason. Honestly, I had never heard of Michael Herd and I'm googling info on the Chiefs literally all the time. Brad Ekwerekwu has the chance to be a practice squad guy. He seems like he has decent skills. If you're an Eck guy, you're in good company. Redbeard over at Arrowhead Addict is absolutely nuts for the former MU wideout.

I'm not saying all of these guys are the exact guys who are going to get cut tomorrow. Its a jumping off point to see who the Chiefs will eventually keep on their 53 man roster. For example, the Chiefs have 14 corners and safeties so its more than likely that Chad Williams won't be the only secondary guy to get cut.

Time for Kansas City Chiefs Fans to Rally Around Damon Huard

For now, it has been settled. Damon Huard will start in Houston on September 9th for the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite my disappointment, Damon Huard is the offensive leader of this team whether we like it or not. And as Chiefs fans, its time to rally behind our starting QB.

The picture above is after the Chiefs victory over the Seahawks last year. Lets hope we see many more pictures just like it in 2007.
