Preseason 2007

Kansas City Chiefs Add TE James Adkisson to the Practice Squad

And then there were 8.

Adkisson (6-5, 230) originally entered the NFL as rookie free agent with Cincinnati in 2003 and has appeared in two games with Oakland, making one catch for nine yards. Adkisson has also spent time on the Raiders practice squad from 2003-06 and saw duty for the Cologne Centurions of NFL Europa in 2004, catching 11 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown.

The South Carolina alum appeared in 17 games in two seasons with the Gamecocks, hauling in 26 passes for 339 yards and one TD. The St. Louis native also participated on the South Carolina track team after earning Junior College All-America honors at Kemper Military Academy in Boonville, MO.

Big, tall and fast. We'll see how he works out. I can't imagine he'll get more chances than Michael Allan this season though, let alone see any playing time. Also, despite what the roster says, S Chad Williams was released. That leaves us with 54 currently on the active roster, with one more player being cut after Jared Allen serves his two game suspension.

GO CHIEFS!

The Kansas City Chiefs are Ready to Begin the Season

If you haven't voted in the poll to the right yet, make sure you do before the season starts. Its the most evenly divided poll we've ever had on AP.

Theoretically, of course. Judging by last year's transactions and today's comments by Herm Edwards, the Kansas City Chiefs roster and practice squad are pretty much set. The whirlwind of activity since the major cuts were announced on Saturday will have died down by this time tomorrow and we can look forward to the Houston Texans. The depth chart isn't updated quite yet and the roster still needs to remove one guy and move another to the practice squad but they're all there. If the rumors are true, S Chad Williams will be gone from that list and either Rashad Barksdale or Johnny Baldwin will more than likely be on the practice squad. Here's the count at each position, excluding Williams and including Barksdale on the active roster. The team is nicely split between 25 offensive players and 25 defensive players. I'll leave you to guess the special teams guys.

Offense Defense
(2) C (6) CB
(1) FB (4) DE
(2) G (7) LB
(3) QB (4) S
(3) RB (4) DT
(5) T
(4) TE
(5) WR
25 Total 25 Total

Eleven rookies are on the squad, and outside of them, the average NFL experience of the Chiefs is right at 6 years. Add those rookies into the average and the average experience is right at 5 years. 24 of the 53 players were drafted by the Chiefs. Only 3 of our players have come to the team via trade.

The season is almost here. As I write this, we are just a little over 4.5 days away according to the fancy new countdown clock I just put in at the top of the homepage.

GO CHIEFS!!!

Never Too Early to Start Scouting

**UPDATE #2** Sippio and Baldwin are officially members of the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad.

**UPDATE** Nothing official and nothing more than Internet chatter says the Chiefs have picked up LB Johnny Baldwin from the Lion's waivers and released S Chad Williams. I will confirm it when I can.

Hat tip to Card Chronicle.

I'm waiting for the dust to clear a bit on the Chiefs roster then I'll jump back into posting today. I don't want to go into any lengthy analysis until everything is finalized (as close as possible anyway). Not that I would do a lengthy analysis anyway but you know.

The (Current) Practice Squad of the Kansas City Chiefs

From the official site:

Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Monday that the club had signed six players to its practice squad. G Emmanuel Akah, DE Claude Harriott, FB Gilbert Harris, DT T.J. Jackson, T Ramiro Pruneda and DE Khreem Smith were all added to the club's developmental roster. Two of the six players were in the Chiefs training camp earlier this season.
So we confirm that the Chiefs grabbed Khreem Smith, who was formerly of the Vikings team that scrimmaged with the Chiefs this summer. Nobody of real note on the practice squad frankly. We'll have a full recap on Monday Tuesday.

Kansas City Chiefs Pick Up CB Rashad Barksdale

We'll see if this guy ends up on the team. He was just released by the Eagles.

Barksdale (5-11, 208) originally entered the NFL as a sixth-round draft pick (201st overall) of Philadelphia in 2007. He began his collegiate career at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York before transferring to Albany as a junior baseball player. He joined the Great Danes football team as a running back before shifting to safety. He opened 10 games as a senior at Albany, recording 37 tackles and three INTs to earn Mid-Major All-America honors from Football Gazette. The Hudson, New York native was an all-state performer in both baseball and football at Hudson High School.
Bleeding Green Nation described Barksdale as a project when he was drafted back in April. The dust has yet to settle on the Chiefs 53 man roster. I'm sure there are more moves to come.

Kansas City Chiefs Claim QB Thigpen Off Waivers; Derrick Ross Released

**UPDATE #3*** Word is the Chiefs signed former Viking DE Khreem Smith. Nothing official yet. I will confirm when it becomes official. We'd like to think our currency around here is our credibility. Hope you concur...More on this from Scout.

**UPDATE #2** RB Derrick Ross has been released.

**UPDATE** The Thigpen signing is official. Unfortunately, Bobby Sippio was cut in order to make room for Thigpen. If Sippio clears waivers, the Chiefs will put him on the practice squad. I don't really see Sippio clearing waivers, especially since he was featured in Hard Knocks. I'm not saying the guy is great. I think it would be a lot of fun to watch him play for the Chiefs this season.

Nothing official but here is the report (Hat tip to Chiefs Planet):

Quarterback Tyler Thigpen, whom the Vikings were hoping to sneak through waivers, has been awarded to the Kansas City Chiefs, according to his agent, Joel Turner.
Here is a little info on the 7th round choice. Out of Coastal Carolina, Thigpen appears to be nothing more than a body at the no. 3 QB spot.

Damion McIntosh to Play in the Season Opener

It sounds like he has a good shot to do it. I heard after the Rams game that he would be back, so we'll see. From yesterday's coach's press conference:

Q: Does Dameon McIntosh have a chance to play against Houston?

EDWARDS: "Yeah, he's getting better. He has an outside chance."

Q: Is he going to be practicing on Monday?

EDWARDS: "We think so."

Very, very good news. Hopefully we don't have to see any games with Will Svitek as the starting left tackle.

Kansas City Chiefs Cut Casey Printers

And he declined to stay on the practice squad.

The Kansas City Chiefs have cut former CFL star Casey Printers, a Vancouver radio station reports.

According to CKNW, the Chiefs reportedly offered to keep Printers on the practice roster, but he declined, and will go on the 24-hour waiver wire on Saturday.

The station also reports that Printers wants to sign with an NFL team by next week, but if he doesn't, he will turn his attention to the CFL.

More cuts will be coming today. This is surprising news in my opinion. Printers played the best out of any of the Chiefs QBs in the preseason and I figured he would be kept over Jeff Terrell. Check the comment section for updates today.

My Stab at the Kansas City Chiefs 53 Man Roster

Before we get into the cuts, did anyone notice the Chiefs' desperation in selling some of these tickets? KCChiefs.com had a splash page up yesterday and today promoting ticket packages. Also, during last night's game, there was a scrolling marquee at the bottom of the screen promoting Chiefs tickets. I guess when you've handcuffed yourself to the Chiefs soldout record as much as Carl Peterson has, you live and die with it.

*Note: Red is for the players who are getting cut, yellow for the practice squad and the blue for the PUP list. Take a look over and let me know if I've made any obvious errors. Special teams is pretty much set so I'm not worrying about that. Also, I'm pretty sure Patrice Majondo-Mwamba is an international player exemption that doesn't count towards the roster.

OFFENSE

WR 18 Samie Parker 80 Jeff Webb 82 Dwayne Bowe 9 Ean Randolph 85 Eddie Drummond
WR 87 Eddie Kennison 81 Chris Hannon 14 Brad Ekwerekwu 8 Bobby Sippio
QB 11 Damon Huard 12 Brodie Croyle 1 Casey Printers 15 Jeff Terrell
RB 27 Larry Johnson 26 Michael Bennett 21 Kolby Smith 38 Marcus O'Keith 39 Derrick Ross 31 Priest Holmes
FB 84 Kris Wilson 46 Boomer Grigsby 30 Gilbert Harris
LT 77 Damion McIntosh 71 Will Svitek
LG 54 Brian Waters 65 Herb Taylor 72 James Newby
C 62 Casey Wiegmann 64 Rudy Niswanger 73 Rob Hunt
RG 76 John Welbourn 61 Tre Stallings
RT 60 Chris Terry 74 Kyle Turley
TE 88 Tony Gonzalez 89 Jason Dunn 84 Kris Wilson 47 Michael Allan 48 Keith Willis

DEFENSE

LE 91 Tamba Hali 96 Jimmy Wilkerson
LT 95 Ron Edwards 92 James Reed 65 Patrice Majondo-Mwamba
RT 70 Alfonso Boone 93 Tank Tyler 73 Kiki Gonzalez
RE 69 Jared Allen 90 Turk McBride 72 Montez Murphy 61 Michael Heard
LOLB 56 Derrick Johnson 97 Keyaron Fox 57 Nick Reid
MLB 50 Napoleon Harris 52 William Kershaw 98 Nate Harris
ROLB 59 Donnie Edwards 99 Kendrell Bell 55 Rich Scanlon
LCB 24 Ty Law 39 Dimitri Patterson 35 Will Poole 40 Justin Phinisee
RCB 23 Patrick Surtain 20 Benny Sapp 34 Tyron Brackenridge
SS 49 Bernard Pollard 25 Greg Wesley 30 Marlon Fair
FS 44 Jarrad Page 47 Jon McGraw 29 Chad Williams

I think the addition of kick returner Eddie Drummond pretty much seals the practice squad fate of Jeff Webb and Ean Randolph. Webb and Randolph are both kick return guys first and receivers second. The addition of Drummond eliminates the return need, relegating Webb and Randolph to next year. Plus, I think the addition of Bobby Sippio would push those guys further down the WR depth chart anyway. Justin Phinisee is in the same boat. His return skills were part of the reason he was still around and with Drummond in, he's on the practice squad as well.

Michael Allan is potentially our TE of the future. Tony G doesn't have that many years left and his retirement in the next few years would coincide perfectly with the development of Allan.

Our starting linebackers are definitely set. Kendrell Bell's salary really prohibits him from being cut at the moment so he stays. Rich Scanlon can play all three LB positions so he's in as well. William Kershaw has had a pretty good preseason so he earns a spot as well. Nick Reid on the practice squad is a bit of a stretch but I gotta throw one local guy in.

No reason for three fullbacks. Bye bye Gilbert Harris. The Chiefs aren't cutting a "folk hero" with a mohawk.

Benny Sapp and Dimitri Patterson both earned their backup CB spots this preseason, with Sapp playing especially well last night. Jarrad Page had a few nice tackles last night but also missed a few, which means I'm still worried about him. I've said it before- Jon McGraw is a Herm guy. He'll be around.

I'm going to sit here and look at this chart throughout today. I'll note any changes I make. Cuts are by 3 pm 6 pm tomorrow. Any spots where you particularly agree or disagree?

Kansas City Chiefs Water Cooler Conversations

The final game of the preseason is tonight against the St. Louis Rams. Hardly any of the starters will be playing and besides Brodie Croyle starting the game, there won't be a whole lot to talk about. I've gathered some odd and quirky facts about some of the Kansas City Chiefs players so you can keep the conversation going at the office, on your couch or at the bar. Feel free to claim that you found these on your own. All of the info comes from the horribly outdated NFLPlayers.com.

Damon Huard

Nickname: Huey

Favorite movies: Risky Business, Stand By Me, Braveheart

Football heroes growing up: Dan Marino and John Elway (You have to be ****ing kidding me)

Few people know that: Huard worked for the co-founder of Microsoft (Paul Allen) his first year out of college

Larry Johnson

Favorite movie: Glory

Few people know that: Larry's a painter

Pre-game ritual: Listening to the Glory soundtrack

Nicknames: LJ and Big L

Tony Gonzalez

Craziest ambition: Act on Broadway

Autobiography would be called: Keepin' it Real

Favorite movie: Forrest Gump

Casey Wiegman

Few people know that: Casey's hometown of Parkersburg, IA, has had four NFL players come out of it

Favorite bands: Dave Matthews Band, Limp Bizkit, and Godsmack. Of course, Jimmy Buffet.

Nickname: Wigs

Patrick Surtain

Few people know that: Grew up with Juvenile, the rapper

Craziest ambition: To get a million dollars in singles and wallow in it

Hobbies: Sleeping and watching Sportscenter

Rod Gardner

Nicknames: Playboy, Sticky Fingers, Rod

Craziest ambition: Own a yacht

Dream car: Camry

So, Huey is a traitor; The Big L is deeper than we all thought; Tony G is a more than likely a diva; Wigs couldn't get any whiter; Patrick Surtain was makin' it rain before Pacman Jones; and former Chief Rod Gardner is probably closer to a buying a Camry than ever.
