2010 Kansas City Chiefs Preseason

Who Will End Up With Final Wide Receiver Slot(s) For Chiefs?

Photo

In a post up on the Mother Ship, Josh Looney points at a handful of players who are impressing the coaching staff of the Chiefs and specifically head coach Todd Haley. It's nice to read the particular names on the list, especially guys the Chiefs (and fans) were hoping to break through like Cameron Sheffield and Justin Houston. But one name that stands out is among the finalist for one of the remaining wide receiver slots on the roster: Verran Tucker.

The Chiefs unexpected signing of Keary Colbert highlighted this position when it was clear that the Chiefs brass were serious about giving him a chance to make the team. That placed even more pressure on guys like Tucker to make the team, but apparently Tucker is rising to the occasion. As Looney writes:

Chiefs' Todd Haley Says Nobody Ruled Out Yet For Friday's Game

The Kansas City Chiefs line up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday night for their first preseason game of the year but we still don't know how many players will actually play for the Chiefs.

The league's transition rules moving back into the league year didn't allow free agents to practice with their teams until Aug. 4. That means a good chunk of players will be operating on less than one week of practice which makes us wonder how many of those vets will be seeing action.

Chiefs coach Todd Haley talked to reporters on Wednesday and said the coaching staff still hadn't made up their mind on who will be playing Friday night. Via KCChiefs.com:

Kansas City Chiefs Depth Chart Changes From 2009 To 2010: Offense

If you've read about the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason then it's fairly clear that they've made significant upgrade.s Last year they were working with lots of changes, new faces and little expectations.

In 2010 however the expectations have risen. That's due to the folks that the Chiefs have brought in.

I went back and looked at the depth chart at this time last year compared to the current one. There are quite a few differences on the offensive side of the ball.

Here's a look at the changes in the first team offense from 2009 to 2010.

Kansas City Chiefs Position Battles Wrapping Up

When training camp started we went and looked at a few position battles that were looming. From inside linebacker to center to safety, it appears we know the results of most of these training camp battles.

The best battle of the offseason was Derrick Johnson and Jovan Belcher vs. Demorrio Williams and Corey Mays, followed closely by the battle at center.

After several months of competition, here are your position battles:

Chiefs' Jarrad Page Trade Is Once Again With A Familiar Partner

The Kansas City Chiefs traded safety Jarrad Page to the New England Patriots over the weekend and it marked another trade GM Scott Pioli has done with the Patriots.

Through a year and a half in Kansas City, Pioli tends to trade with teams he's familiar with. With the Patriots, it's Bill Belichick, the Falcons it's GM Thomas Dimitroff and the Dolphins it's Bill Parcells. Here are a few of the familiar trades for Pioli:

The Chiefs also traded with the Panthers (Tank Tyler) and Texans (moving up in the third round of the 2010 draft).

I don't think it's a particularly good or bad thing that Pioli tends to work with people he knows. I think it's probably easier to get through a trade with someone you know. There's probably less back-and-forth working with someone you know.

For the Chiefs, working with a good team like the Patriots is probably a smart move. Hey, it could be the Lions.

Everyone Is 'Currently Fine' After Ambulance Shows Up At Chiefs Practice

After Monday's Kansas City Chiefs practice, the Kansas City Star's Adam Teicher reported that an ambulance showed up on the field. There were three players missing practice Monday -- Ryan O'Callaghan, Alex Magee and Cameron Sheffield -- and the identity of the player that was apparently tended to hasn't been identified.

Either way, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that "all members of the team are currently fine."

Todd Haley was light on details when asked about the reported ambulance visit on Monday.

Per the Star:

"There's nobody I know of right now," Haley said when asked about the issue after practice. "The guys out there practicing practiced hard. I didn't see anything occur where ... We're fighting through some things with some guys you've been aware of."

So whoever was injured -- if it even was a player -- is fine.

And, no, I don't think Haley will ever address what happened.

NFL Roster Cuts: Newest Chief Anthony Toribio Gets To Town

Photo

The newest member of the Kansas City Chiefs, former Green Bay Packers nose tackle Anthony Toribio, spoke to the media for the first time as a Chief.

Toribio confirmed that the Packers were planning on signing him back to the practice squad before he got the call.

"We came and played here Thursday," Toribio said. "I couldn't even give you a guess that I was going to end up here. I was gonna get signed back to the practice squad and then got a call wtih like 10 minutes before the waiver period ended and they said you're going to the Chiefs. So I had to pack up everything on short notice, in like two or three hours, and I'm here."

I saw some reports out of Green Bay that his Packers teammates were saddened to hear the news he'd be moving to Kansas City.

"You develop friendships and you get tied to the coach," Toribio said. "You gotta understand that it's a business. Nothing lasts forever. I was going to be in Green Bay forever, you know? It's a better move for my career to get on the 53-man roster."

Indeed he's got a much better shot here in Kansas City. The Packers have a top ten pick in B.J. Raji lining up at nose tackle so Kansas City presents a better opportunity for him.

"It's the same system here," he said. "I just have to get adjusted to a few of the minor details. Once I get adjusted I'll be comfortable."

"You work your butt off. this is what you work for, to get on the 53 man roster. To finally get on there, it's a great accomplishment for yourself."

NFL Roster Cuts: Chiefs Cut Signs With Another Team

I believe the first player cut by the Kansas City Chiefs last weekend has found a new home.

Interior offensive lineman Lemuel Jeanpierre was signed by the Seattle Seahawks. He was part of the initial group of cuts for the Chiefs.

All the Chiefs players cut were not vested veterans meaning they went through waivers after being released. It means that all the teams had a shot at signing that particular player but declined.

Here are the Chiefs players that were released that haven't found a new home: TE Leroy Banks, WR Rich Gunnell, G/T Ike Ndukwe, CB Mike Richardson, LB John Russell, G Dan Santucci, T/G Colin Brown, LB David Herron, NT Derek Lokey, S DaJuan Morgan and RB Javarris Williams.

All of the members of the Chiefs practice squad were cut and passed through waivers before signing as well.

Get used to some of the names above. I imagine we'll see one or two of them return at some point during the season because they're familiar with the offensive or defensive system.

Have any of the other cuts signed to this point? My research said no.
