2009 Training Camp
Your Thursday Matt Cassel Injury Update
Imagine being Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel and having all the attention on you. All day, every day. Focusing on a knee.
Since we're so focused on that knee, and whether it can withstand some heat from the Baltimore Ravens defense on Sunday, let's take a look at what a few practice observers had to say about him today.
As we noted earlier, Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star thought Cassel looked a little off.
Matt Cassel still looks a little gimpy to me. On hurry-up passing drills today, he seemed to run toward the huddle with a limp.
Here's Bob Gretz's take, who notes what appears to be some improvement:
In the quarterback drills, Cassel showed a little more energetic pass drop and plant than previously. In one of the drills, the QB drops three steps, stops, takes a shuffle step or two, and then drops two more steps. It’s a herky-jerky movement for the legs; Cassel did that and appeared to have no difficulties.
Gretz notes that Cassel did no throwing on the run on Monday and Wednesday. He delivered one accurate pass on the run today.
Josh Looney at the Mothership chose to focus less on Cassel's knee and more on his demeanor on the field:
Chiefs QB Matt Cassel’s left knee might be bothering him a bit, but his pride sure isn’t hurt. Cassel was his vocal self today at practice, celebrating a perfect throw during QB net drills. It’s that type of competitiveness during simple drill work that helps fans rest easy, knowing that Cassel will go on Sunday should his body let him.
One reporter says he looks a little gimpy, one says he looks better and the other chose to focus on something other than his knee.
So, basically, we haven't learned much of anything new. Cassel's status still appears to be up in the air.

Barry Richardson Returns; Chiefs Practice Squad Complete
When the Kansas City Chiefs released second year tackle Barry Richardson yesterday, it was to make room for newcomer Ryan O'Callaghan. Many of us thought the move was made under the assumption that Richardson would clear waivers and return to the team as a member of the practice squad.
Barry Richardson is the eighth and final member of the Chiefs practice squad. The other members are as follows:
- CB Jackie Bates
- TE Tom Crabtree
- DE Dion Gales
- DE Bobby Greenwood
- G Darryl Harris
- RB Javarris Williams
- WR Rodney Wright
Every member of the Chiefs initial practice squad was a participant in the team's training camp. With the lack of depth at tackle, I would expect the Chiefs to activate Richardson at some point throughout the season barring any major additions.

There were a few changes with the additions and subtractions made in the last week. Here are the changes:

QB Matt Cassel Takes the Practice Field...In Full Pads
Just some great news for you this morning from Josh Looney about Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel and other injured Chiefs:
QB Matt Cassel in full pads today. Flowers Page and O'Connell too. That's encouraging.
Very encouraging indeed Mr. Looney. Does this mean that Cassel is a go for this weekend's season opener against the Baltimore Ravens? Not necessarily but Cassel taking the practice field in full pads is about as encouraging as you're going to get on a Monday morning.
That's good news on TE Jake O'Connell as well and even better news about CB Brandon Flowers and S Jarrad Page. Flowers injured his shoulder against the Seattle Seahawks a couple of weeks ago and both O'Connell and Page's injuries were not revealed. The tight end and safety were both scratched before the Seahawks game.
See Chiefs fans? No reason to get worked about a strained MCL. Even if Matt Cassel doesn't play this weekend, you think he has to be back for the home opener in Week 2.
Update 12:25 PM from Bob Gretz:
With the regular season underway, the media is allowed only a brief 20-25 minute glimpse into practice. In that time, Cassel worked with the other three quarterbacks on individual position drills. When the QBs shuffled through some pads on the ground, Cassel did not take part.
And when he worked taking a snap and dropping back to pass, he did so gingerly. Same with his follow through on that left leg. It was obvious that he was far from 100 percent. True indication will be how his knee responds to the work he does today. The Chiefs do not have a practice on Tuesday, so that’s an extra day for his knee to recover.

Chiefs Depth Chart with Additions and Subtractions
The Kansas City Chiefs will likely release the real depth chart for week one at the Baltimore Ravens sometime later today but for now I've taken the most recent one they've made available (last week before the final preseason game) and made the appropriate additions and subtractions over the last week.
hmills110 did the same thing a couple days ago so this is essentially an extension of what he did. Of course, I'm using the famous TheQ table.
Basically, what I've done is taken the old depth chart, removed the players who were released from the 53 man active roster, added the players we've signed and moved everyone up if there was a player in front of them cut. This is not necessarily a reflection of how I think, or the Chiefs think, the current depth chart stands. It's just moving names up and down according to the recent cuts and additions.
This doesn't necessarily mean this is the way things will shake out. In fact, it definitely doesn't mean this is the way things will shake out.
You can take a look at the chart after the jump, but here's one of the most glaring weaknesses that jump out at me:
Defensive End
Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson are on the first team. Wallace Gilberry and Alex Magee are backing up Dorsey.
There's no one listed behind Jackson which means one of three things:
- Another player will be signed
- Bobby Greenwood and/or Dion Gales will be promoted to the active roster from the practice squad
- Gilberry or Magee will slide over and back up Jackson
There are certainly other weaknesses (wide receiver) and strengths (secondary) but this is the way things stand right now. This will probably change later today with the release of the latest depth chart.
As you look at this, keep in mind the following are on the practice squad and could be promoted to the active roster: CB Jackie Bates, TE Tom Crabtree, DE Dion Gales, DE Bobby Greenwood, G Darryl Harris, RB Javarris Williams and WR Rodney Wright. We're also expecting to hear that Barry Richardson will be added to the practice squad.

Chiefs GM Scott Pioli Tried to Get a 7th Round Pick for Bernard Pollard
When the news broke of three year veteran Bernard Pollard being one of the names on the Kansas City Chiefs cut list last Saturday, there were a myriad of emotions, with most of them representing disappointment.
If you were like me, it wasn't so much, 'Why did the Chiefs get rid of Bernard Pollard?' I knew why they didn't want him. My question was more, 'Why did the Chiefs get rid of Bernard Pollard for nothing?'
Apparently not, according to Peter King of Sports Illustrated.
"Bernard Pollard out," King writes in the latest MMQB. "Chiefs GM Scott Pioli thought he might get a seventh-round pick for him, but no one stepped up."
So, heading into this thing, Pioli's judge of talent was pretty accurate. I imagine the previous regime would have placed a higher value on Pollard. Just a hunch.
I've heard the theory that Pollard was cut by Todd Haley to make a statement. Apparently not. If no one else in the league would give up a seventh round pick for him then his services were pretty useless to not only the Chiefs, but plenty of teams across the league.
I'm very interested to see who the next team to pick him up is and when they'll pick him up.

Kansas City Chiefs Establish Seven Man Practice Squad
The Kansas City Chiefs have released some names on their newly established practice squad.
- CB Jackie Bates
- TE Tom Crabtree
- DE Dion Gales
- DE Bobby Greenwood
- G Darryl Harris
- RB Javarris Williams
- WR Rodney Wright
Do those names look familiar? They should because everyone one of them competed in the team's training camp.
This list comes courtesy of Josh Looney at the Mothership (via TheScootness in the FanShots), where he assumes, like many of us, that Barry Richardson will be added to the practice squad should he clear waivers.
The Chiefs are allowed eight players on the practice squad. Chris talked a little more about the rules of the practice squad here.
