2009 Kansas City Chiefs Offseason

Two Chiefs Named to All-Rookie Team

Last season didn't have many bright spots for the Chiefs, but the first draft under Pioli seems to be on the right track. DE Tyson Jackson and K Ryan Succop have been named to the 2009 All-Rookie team by the Pro Football Writers of America and Pro Football Weekly

As we all know, Succop had a record setting season for a Chiefs kicker and one of the best seasons for any rookie kicker in nearly three decades. Tyson Jackson, on the other hand, didn't set any records but was a solid player that appeared in all 16 games this past season.

The Chiefs will need to build on their young nucleus for next season, and so far it seems like they are off to a good start.

After the jump is the full roster of the All-Rookie team via Bob Gretz.

Thoughts on the Chiefs Signing Former Eagles RT Jon Runyan

Jon-runyan_mediumThe possible addition of RT Jon Runyan is making waves among Chiefs fans, and for good reason. The right side of the line is well-documented as the weakest part of the offense of the Chiefs and that's not just a fan's opinion. Even the front office seems to be throwing everything but the kitchen sink into the RG and RT and, apparently, nothing's working thus far.

With Runyan in Kansas City for a physical, we asked JasonB over at Bleeding Green Nation for his insights into the longtime cornerstone of the Eagles offensive line:

On Runyan's health:

My first concern with signing Runyan would obviously be his health. He had microfracture surgery on his knee in the offseason and was only cleared to start running a few weeks ago. So here's a 36 year old player, coming off surgery, who hasn't even been able to run all summer. Add in the fact that he's had back problems the past few years and there's red flags all over that one.

Previewing the Kansas City Chiefs 2009 Schedule: Week 12

Thus far in our predictions, our Chiefs colored glasses have the team at 4-6 right now. The funny thing, our predictions to get to those four wins aren't exactly crazy. It could happen!

Week 12 will be the second meeting of the season between the Chiefs and the San Diego Chargers. Joel caught up with John from Bolts from the Blue for our Week 7 preview of the Chargers. Check out that post here.

In that first preview post on the Chargers, John talked about LaDainian Tomlinson, Shawne Merriman and switching to the 3-4 defense. This morning. I'm going to throw out some numbers and other misc. tidbit of info on the Chargers to help shed some more light on what to expect come Week 12.

Check out the rest of our previews and predictions here. After the jump, we're talking Chargers.

Report: Chiefs, Jaguars Talking Trade for QB Tyler Thigpen

Jason LaConfora of the NFL Network cites sources that say the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars are talking about a potential trade for quarterback Tyler Thigpen.

The hang up, per LaConfora's sources, is the value of Thigpen.  Via his Twitter account:

KC and Jacksonville talking trade, but unable to agree on value of QB Tyler Thigpen, sources said. Chiefs want more than a 5th rounder.

Wow.  Did I say wow?

As far as the value goes, I'm with the Chiefs that he's worth more than a fifth rounder.  Quarterbacks are at a premium so even ones that are 1-10 in career starts have value.

***

Update 8:56 AM: ESPN (via SportsCenter) is reporting the Chiefs are looking for a third round pick.

***

The Jaguars make a lot of sense and their name has come up in some of the speculation around here.  David Garrard was tabbed 'the guy' via a $60+ million contract prior to the 2008 season but faith in him has apparently been waning.

Thigpen's role on the 2009 Chiefs (or lack thereof possibly) has been a major dividing point for Chiefs fans.  On the one hand, he brings a unique asset to the game (his legs).  On the other hand, he hasn't demonstrated an ability to lead a traditional, pro-style offense.

Initial thoughts on this?

The Greatest Kansas City Chiefs, By the Numbers: #37

Joe_delaney_medium

Two Kansas City Chiefs have worn number 37 - CB Tim Collier and RB Joe Delaney.

While Collier spent three seasons in KC as part of a three team journey in his career, Joe Delaney's two NFL seasons left an impact that was much greater.

After the jump, I've posted what we wrote back in June, on the anniversary of Joe's death. And since it's 3:45 AM right now on the west coast (where I am before I fly out today), I feel lucky to have gotten this posted (Anyone else feel like they're perpetually chasing more sleep?).

Click over for more info on Joe Delaney.

Former Kansas City Chiefs WR Otis Taylor Makes it to Final Five in Sr. HOF Nominations

Otistayloraction_mediumFormer Kansas City Chiefs WR Otis Taylor made it to the final five of voting for the Seniors Committee nominations for enshrinement to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  The problem is that only two candidates were selected.

Taylor wasn't one of them.

The way the Seniors Committee works is a nine person panel will receive a list of eligible nominees.  Via mail-in ballot, they'll knock those names to a list of the top 15 candidates.  Five members of the nine person committee will then meet in Canton to decide who they'll nominate for enshrinement.

That meeting happened today.

And, according to Bob Gretz, Taylor made it to the final five but ultimately was not selected as a Seniors nominee.  Close, but ultimately no cigar.  The final five placement is, however, an awesome accomplishment in itself and only serves as a stepping stone for next year.

Previewing the Kansas City Chiefs 2009 Schedule: Week 11

Steelers_chiefs_goal_line_medium

On November 22nd, 2009, the Kansas City Chiefs will return to Arrowhead Stadium for the first time in 27 days to host the defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers.

Defending champs.  12 wins.  Two-time Super Bowl winner quarterback.  #1 defense.

There are a lot of reasons to fret about this week 11 match up.

Our predictions thus far in these previews have placed the Chiefs at 3-5.  Not bad, right?  Well, in week 11, we're talking about the only team that could challenge the Patriots for the team of the decade title.  This is going to be a tough, tough match up.
