2008 Draft
Undrafted Free Agent Signing: Kicker Connor Barth
UNC kicker Connor Barth is one of the many free agents that the Chiefs picked up after this past weekend's draft. Since the Chiefs' '07 5th round pick, UCLA kicker Justin Medlock, seemed to mentally tap out before the season began, I found this video of a "cerebral" Connor Barth quite interesting. This guy may end up kicking for the Chiefs next year. And unlike training camp last year, I'm sure Barth will have plenty of competition.

About that Kansas City Chiefs' Offensive Line
Most Kansas City Chiefs fans expected the team to come out of draft weekend stocked with offensive line prospects, likely with at least two upper-tier prospects coming to Kansas City. Last year's line was so atrocious that only Damion McIntosh, Brian Waters and possibly Rudy Niswanger could say for sure that they had jobs in 2008.
Surprising many, the Chiefs dipped into the offensive line talent pool only twice and only drafted one upper-tier prospect - Virginia OG Brandon Albert at #15. Barry Richardson, a tackle from Clemson, was taken early in the 6th round and has already been considered a "steal" by many. Normally, and Richardson may be an exception, 6th round tackles don't jump in and start.
So where does that leave the Chiefs' offensive line, which was by far the weakest link in an already weak team chain?
Currently, this is how I see the line stacking up (Qualifier: This will change) -
LT - Brandon Albert, Anthony Alabi/Wade Smith
LG - Brian Waters, Herb Taylor, Tre Stallings
C - Rudy Niswanger, Wade Smith
RG - Will Svitek, Herb Taylor
RT - Damion McIntosh, Barry Richardson
It's been noted that if Albert does indeed win the left tackle job, that McIntosh will move to the right side either as a guard or a tackle.
I left out few practice squad guys and it should be obvious that this is a very preliminary depth chart. Also, if you've heard read or heard any tidbits about who will be playing what position, chime in and let us know.

Morning Update (A New Dawn Edition)
I'm putting the finishing touches on a comprehensive draft post right now, which I'll post in a bit. I know we talked so much over the weekend - over 1000 comments on Saturday alone - but I think we need some sort of wrap up post just to have things organized. Thanks again to everyone who was here over the weekend. It was a hell of a time. For those of you that need to get caught up quickly, here is a complete listing of the Chiefs' draft picks. Also, WPI has all of their draft coverage organized quite nicely.
- Tons of great draft stuff as usual from Arrowhead Addict. I'm sure you've already been over there a few times this weekend but if you haven't, definitely make time for it.
- KC Chiefs Fanatic gives us a few thoughts on Glenn Dorsey. The verdict? The guy is good. Really good.
- Gonner's View weighs in on the draft and like every sane Chiefs fan, says we did a hell of a job.
- The Chiefs were the only team to get an A draft grade from Mel Kiper, Jr. -- "The rebuilding process is on. The Chiefs started the draft with 13 picks, and they made them count."
- Wow. A actual newspaper writer who said that the Chiefs' could have traded Larry Johnson. Where's the accountability?
- Here is the post-draft press conference transcript from Carl Peterson and Herm Edwards. Could this line get any more "Herm" -- "We stuck mainly to our board and have players who can compete at a lot of different positions." I love it Herm. Keep it coming.
- Oh man this is too sweet. Peter King, who normally thinks about the Chiefs about twice a year, doesn't even include the Chiefs in his top five ranking of the best drafts. Why? Because the Chiefs did so well that it would be unfair to include them.
- You know all of those mock drafts you read before this past weekend? The Huddle Report grades them for accuracy.
- Fox Sports -- "The Chiefs identified the sleeper of the draft in the fifth round, a player I mentioned in my All-Sleeper Defensive Team, Grand Valley State CB Brandon Carr. Carr is a tremendous athlete with great size, and he really impressed scouts during his Pro Day. He ran a 4.43 in the 40, had a 35-inch vertical and 10'4" broad jump and timed well in shuttle drills. Those attributes and his playmaking ability make him a steal for K.C."
- And this is why I dislike Jason Whitlock writing about the Chiefs. I really enjoy his 10 Truths column on Fox Sports and his other writings. I just can't stand his doom and gloom with the Chiefs.
- AFC West draft picks -- Denver, Oakland and San Diego.
- Nice work by a couple of you calling Barry Richardson to the Chiefs last week.
The Monday Morning QB is coming out in me and I'm still extremely happy with the Chiefs draft.
The undrafted free agent signing are already starting to come through. Scroll down for a few of those.
Stick around for my draft review coming out in a bit.

Draft Day Live Blog
- #1 Miami Dolphins - OT Jake Long
- #2 St. Louis Rams - DE Chris Long
- #3 Atlanta Falcons - QB Matt Ryan
- #4 Oakland Raiders - RB Darren McFadden
- #5 Kansas City Chiefs - DT Glenn Dorsey
Yes! Fantastic pick by the Chiefs' brass. Glenn Dorsey has routinely been called the best player in this draft and the Chiefs obviously could not pass on his talent. Even with Herm Edwards penchant for rounding up picks, Dorsey was simply too good to pass up.
Making this pick even more incredible, the Chiefs turned down a last minute offer from the Saints. The offer was this year's first round pick (#10) and next year's second round pick.
**UPDATE 12:05 PM CDT** PFT is reporting that ESPN said that the Raiders will select RB Darren McFadden with the #4 pick.
Well, here we are. The most important draft in the history of the Kansas City Chiefs.
I'll be updating this post with the picks. In the meantime, we have a plethora of fantastic FanPosts to keep you entertained. Check them out to the right side of the page. NFL.com's coverage is here.
So, dive right in and start commenting.

Arrowhead Pride Community Mock Draft -- Pick #63 by the New York Giants
And with the 63rd and final pick in the 2008 Arrowhead Pride Community Mock Draft, the New York Giants select:
Eastern Michigan DE Jason Jones
Chris with the pick:
At the end of the second round, the Giants are in the unenviable position of having their remaining top needs - offensive tackle, corner back and wide receiver - pretty much depleted of upper tier talent. Then again, they did win the Super Bowl so I'm sure that will help ease the anxiety.
With those team needs, the Giants are looking at reaching for a pick and they'll do so but at the defensive end position with Jason Jones. Michael Strahan is bound to actually retire one of these seasons in the near future, perhaps this season.
He's a bit of a reach but so are most of the other prospects at positions of need for the Giants.

Arrowhead Pride Community Mock Draft -- Pick #62 by the New England Patriots
And with the 62nd pick in the 2008 Arrowhead Pride Community Mock Draft, the New England Patriots select:

Iowa CB Charles Godfrey
mikvogel with the pick:
Charles Godfrey will turn out to be a diamond in the rough for some NFL franchise. Godfrey, a senior from Iowa, is one of the bigger cornerback prospects in the country. At 6’1" and 208 lbs., Godfrey has the size and strength to jam receivers at the line, even at the next level. He was voted 2nd team All Big Ten by the coaches this season, after registering 65 tackles, 5 INTs and 9 passes broken up. Godfrey has put together a really good senior campaign, despite having to cover some of the Big Ten’s best receivers like Devin Thomas, Dorien Bryant, Arrelious Benn, and James Hardy. Godfrey is not only big and strong, but has tremendous speed.
His experience at multiple positions, along with his strength and speed, should help him find himself amongst the top tier of cornerbacks in this draft.
He’s the perfect versatile weapon to be selected by the New England scouting crew.1. Miami Dolphins - QB Matt Ryan
2. St. Louis Rams - OT Jake Long
3. Atlanta Falcons - DT Glenn Dorsey
4. Oakland Raiders - DE Chris Long
5. Kansas City Chiefs - DT Sedrick Ellis

Who Replaces Jared Allen for the Kansas City Chiefs?
Currently, the Chiefs have two defensive ends on the roster - Tamba Hali and Turk McBride. Hali will obviously anchor the opposite side of what used to be Jared Allen's end, leaving the other end spot open for competition.
As it stands, the Kansas City Chiefs do not have a clear cut starter ready to step into place. McBride had a slow time adjusting to the NFL last year and I don't believe he is ready to step into a full time starting role at defensive end. This could change as the off season and training camp go on but it's hard for me to believe that the Chiefs have penciled in McBride as the starting left end.
With free agency virtually over, the Chiefs will be quickly turning to the draft this weekend for their defensive end needs. Here's a look at the top rated defensive ends, courtesy of NFL Draft Countdown.
| 1. | Chris Long | Virginia |
| 2. | Vernon Gholston | Ohio St. |
| 3. | Derrick Harvey | Florida |
| 4. |
Philip Merling |
Clemson |
| 5. | Calais Campbell | Miami |
| 6. | Lawrence Jackson |
USC |
So, is it going to be Chris Long or Vernon Gholston? I would be happy with either one of those although I doubt Chris Long makes to to the Chiefs at #5.
If not there, do the Chiefs target who the Vikings were targeting with their #17 pick before they traded it to KC -- Derrick Harvey out of Florida?
Or are the Chiefs willing to delve much deeper in the draft and develop a defensive end they feel has value and potential?
I have to admit that my knowledge of this year's defensive ends is limited. I wasn't expecting us to have to address this position in the draft. Anyone have any suggestions?
