2009 Kansas City Chiefs Campaign

Brian Waters Clears The Air On Infamous Meeting With Todd Haley

Kansas City Chiefs guard Brian Waters appeared on 810 WHB on The Program, with Mr. Soren Petro clearing the air on the infamous initial meeting with the Todd Haley.

(Note: The Program is set up right down the hall from me and they've been pumping out some good content all week)

For those who have been under a rock this year Jason Whitlock of the Kansas City Star reported on the eve of free agency in February 2009 that Waters went to Kansas City to meet with then new coach Todd Haley and he was rebuffed being told, "22 guys off the street can win two games."

The public reaction, and specifically the one in this space, was that Waters was at fault.

Waters was asked about that entire situation and cleared the air.

The Chiefs Should Trade Out of the #5 Spot If Possible

Ol' number five. There's many reasons to not like this pick and it seems that two drafts in a row, the Chiefs are stuck in a position on draft day that is less than ideal given the talent available and the position they are forced to be within. At least in my view, the Chiefs are in a poor position in regards to the first round of this year's draft.

The reason: all of the guys worth picking at the top will be long gone. In particular, I'm speaking about Tennessee safety Eric Berry and disruptive defensive tackles like Gerald McCoy from Oklahoma and Ndamukong Suh from Nebraska. All three should be gone (hopefully not) by the time the Chiefs pick. Each is an absolute game-changing force on the defensive side, which is EXACTLY what's needed in Kansas City. After that, you're left with talent better served a bit later in the draft (even just a few spots) that the Chiefs will have to "reach" for in case they are stuck here.

There's no "absolutely have to have this offensive tackle" in this year's draft - someone like a Joe Thomas. Every pass rusher seems to have some question mark on or off the field. The top cornerback, Joe Haden, would be a nice choice, but it's not the greatest position of need for the Chiefs. USC safety Taylor Mays isn't grading nearly as high to warrant a pick here. And the offensive skill position players just don't merit a choice here either - even if players like C.J. Spiller or Dez Bryant are impressive to watch.

New Fox Mock Draft Has Chiefs Taking Anthony Davis in First Round

Of course, there's a million mock drafts flying around - whether ones made up by our own AP faithful or those on every sports-related blog, site or 'zine available. And thus far, the Chiefs - since they choose in the first five picks - usually are focused on the same players in each draft. But Fox Sports put up a nice mock recently that has the Chiefs selecting some different flavors.

In particular, they have us going offensive line at #5, but not who you think. Instead of the oft-cited Russell Okung from Oklahoma State, they have the Chiefs selecting tackle/behemoth Anthony Davis from Rutgers. The full argument:

"Kansas City's O-line is still a work in progress, and although Oklahoma State's Russell Okung may be the "safer" bet at OT, Davis has unlimited potential. A stud in high school in New Jersey and a mauling presence on the left side of the Rutgers offensive line for the past three seasons, Davis developed into one of the country's top underclassmen in '09. He's more than an imposing presence; at 6-6, 330 lbs -- he's a monster. After a few dominant individual workouts, I look for Davis to leapfrog Okung on draft day boards and end up in Chiefs red. They'll move Branden Albert back to his natural position (guard) or to right tackle and give Davis the keys to Matt Cassel's blind side."

What do you guys think? Do you believe this is possible? And from what you know at this point, would you rather have Okung or Davis?

The Chiefs Should Absolutely Choose Tim Tebow in the 2010 Draft

I just need to get this out there now, because not only am I tired of being afraid to post it here (for fear of being lambasted and losing any credibility I did have as a writer here at AP) but because I want to be able to talk about this more as the draft gets nearer and the water cooler talk heats up:

I sincerely hope the Chiefs choose Tim Tebow with whatever pick they need to get him.

I know the arguments are many against such a move. And it might sound ridiculous when faced with all the evidence to the contrary. Allow me to beat you to the punch:

1. The Chiefs already made a high-level investment in a QB
With both the second round draft pick from '09 and the large-sum contract given to Matt Cassel shortly thereafter, the Chiefs have made their claim on who they believe to be the face of this franchise for the next few years.

2. There are other major positions of need than QB
Glaring holes at all three defensive levels, the wide receiver position and offensive line have most crying foul if the Chiefs remotely think about a quarterback at all in this draft, let alone one with one of their first few picks.

3. Many think Tebow won't even be successful at the next level
His mechanics, his run-first mentality, his college option experience all speak to struggling at the next level - plus there's that Tyler Hansbrough level of hatred that some people seem to have toward the guy.

What The Chiefs Can Learn from This Year's Super Bowl Entrants: Part Three

In Part Three of our series of what the Chiefs can learn from this year's Super Bowl entrants, we take a closer look at the Colts and their ability to make it to the big game two of the last four seasons.

Of course, there's only one Peyton Manning. He has the ability to turn Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie into the next great wide receivers in the NFL. And it's nearly impossible to find one Pro Bowl pass rusher, let alone two, as the Colts have in Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney. Yet underneath some of the most significantly talented players in the NFL lies one thing that every team can learn from when it comes to replicating success: consistency.

We all watched the way Tony Dungy exited from Indianapolis and handed over the reigns to rookie Head Coach Jim Caldwell. Even before he left, Dungy had Caldwell running mini-camps, practices and rookie sessions. It was a seamless transition without egos of any kind getting in the way, allowing for the baton to be passed as smoothly as a Marcus Allen handoff. The players knew what was coming. The coaches knew what was coming. The owner stayed out of what was coming. And the Colts are now sitting in the Super Bowl yet again.

What The Chiefs Can Learn from This Year's Super Bowl Entrants: Part Two

Here in Part Two of our series on what the Chiefs can learn from this year's Super Bowl entrants, we take a closer look at the Saints and the way they were constructed. Specifically, it's interesting to see that the desperate Saints post-Katrina, were in a position to lock in on a player that everyone else deemed a risk - and it's that very player that took them to the next level.

Back in 2005, the Saints had just finished 3-13 in a season they largely spent on the road since their home stadium was constantly under water and in desperate need of major repairs. The city's NFL team mirrored New Orleans' fate in the wake of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and a fresh start was needed for all parties involved. Enter Sean Payton, the offensive guru with connections to Bill Parcells - to whom he's often compared.

That offseason, an interesting move took place that would forever change the Big Easy's football memories. After surgeons with several teams, including the other finalist Miami Dolphins, deemed Drew Brees surgically repaired shoulder as "too risky" to get involved, the Saints were left as the only players willing to invest big money and a long-term contract in the promising Charger quarterback. In their final season under former Head Coach Jim Haslett, the Saints brass had seen enough of starters like Aaron Brooks and Todd Bouman and opened up the coffers for the live arm of Brees. It was a risk that ultimately worked out in the end, as we saw last weekend, and will forever define these Saints for years to come.

What The Chiefs Can Learn from This Year's Super Bowl Entrants: Part One

With the contenders set for the ultimate title fight, we're now offered a chance to look at just what it takes to win in the current NFL climate. It's interesting to look at both the Colts and Saints and dissect the reasons they were the ones left standing when the final bell rang. Of course, the Vikings threw away their chance and the Jets certainly seemed like they would advance when watching the first half of the AFC Championship. But in the end, the teams we look to emulate are the ones who were undefeated for most of the NFL season.

If there's anything we've learned in this 2009 season, it's the same things we've come to learn in the several years up until now: you rise and fall with the quality level of your QB. Of the final four teams, three were quarterbacked by Peyton Manning, Brett Favre and Drew Brees. The other featured a dynamic rookie coming into his own, but that team only made it on the back of the NFL's top defense armed with the NFL's top defensive mastermind in Rex Ryan. In other words, if you don't have a top-notch NFL QB, then you better have the best defense (and even then it didn't work).

The bottom line: You have to have the quarterback to win.

Tony Richardson: 'I want to touch the Lamar Hunt trophy'

Jets FB Tony Richardson was on The Program on 810 WHB yesterday and touched on some interesting topics with the crew there. As you probably know, Richardson is the starting fullback for the Jets, who play the Colts in the AFC Championship this weekend.

Before he signed off during the interview, he had to get one last thing in:

"One thing I definitely got to say is...A lot of people have been asking me all week long what is very special about this game for you. One thing I've always wanted to do is have an opportunity to touch the Lamar Hunt trophy. Mr. Hunt has been good to me and a lot of my teammates that I played with. So this game, for me, carries a little bit more weight. Obviously, we know what Mr. Hunt did for the city of Kansas City and what he's done for me and my career."

"To me, that would be the ultimate...If I could have an opportunity to touch that trophy."

Still love him. Still want him to win. I'll be rooting for the Jets and Tony Richardson this weekend.

After the jump in the rest of the interview, T-Rich touches upon Kurt and Marty Schottenheimer, the Jets o-line, Brad Smith and Marcus Allen.
