What a difference in only five weeks.
The Chiefs have been battling tons of injuries all season long and they seem to have slowed down a bit over the past few weeks. Even still, this weekend the Chiefs will likely field seven starters that did not start against the Chargers in Week 10. The starters who did play in Week 10 who may not play this weekend are bolded in the table above.
WR Mark Bradley is fighting a stingy calf injury that has kept him out the last two weeks and much of the game against the Buffalo Bills.
Center Rudy Niswanger again injured his knee in Week 13 and will likely be done for the year.
G Adrian Jones fully participated in practice yesterday after missing four games with a sprained ankle. He'll likely start actually, if Wade Smith moves to center to replace Rudy Niswanger.
RB Jamaal Charles started in place of the inactive Larry Johnson in Week 10. Larry will get the starting nod this week.
LBs Pat Thomas has missed the last four games and Donnie Edwards has missed the last three. Thomas participated fully in practice yesterday and Edwards was limited. Interestingly enough, the Chiefs only listed two linebackers in their starting line up last week.
DE Alfonso Boone has up to last weekend been starting for the Chiefs in the latter half of the season. He's a player who you never hear about anymore.
The Chargers will likely face seven or so new starters on the Chiefs' team that they didn't face in Week 10. That's one third of the starting lineup.
Advantages of having the new starters? Disadvantages? What new starter makes the most difference, good or bad?

Assessing Chiefs' Need For 2009 Draft
Bumped this up a few hours. Morning update will come around 8 AM. -Chris
It's never too early, is it? Nah.
I am, nonetheless, an addicted draftnik, to the point where I literally have a tackboard that I keep all my favorite draftees targeted at particular points in the Draft.
But the point of this entry is not necessarily to judge which players we might be more intrigued by (rest assured, there will be plenty of those in the months that come from yours truly). Here, I'm more convinced in our needs. What needs are the most and least pressing for the Chiefs in the 2009 NFL Draft?
A complete and obsessive breakdown follows, after the jump.

Defensive Line or Offensive Line?
Around here we've beaten the offensive line to death with consistent (but deserved) criticism. Their inability to effectively protect the quarterback or consistently create running lanes for Larry Johnson has been a massive problem. It's handcuffed our team's ability to get anything going offensively.
However, the other side of the line has been just as big if not bigger of a failure in the Chiefs downfall. The defensive line, comprised of two 1st round picks, one 2nd round pick and a 3rd round pick (albeit all within the last 3 years) aren't getting to the quarterback nearly enough.
With a below average output from the defensive line, Herm Edwards had this to say, “At times we got there, but we didn’t sack him. If you hit the guy and disrupt the guy and he can’t throw it on time, that’s almost as good as a sack. If you can make the guy throw quick, you’ve got a chance.”
Ugh. You HAVE to get to the quarterback in this league. It's as crippling as not having the ability to make first downs through the air on offense.
Teams pass the ball now. A lot. It's performances like these that really do make me think Herm is instituting game plans that are simply out-dated. I mean I'm not blaming the guy. That's his style. It's just unfortunate his style is heading in the opposite direction the league is headed.
The KC Star and the FanPosts touched on this subject as well.

Things I Loved About The Broncos Game
* End of the longest losing streak in Chiefs history.
* The players made plays. Larry Johnson 7.1 yds/carry. Dwayne Bowe 7 Receptions 81 yds. Tony G 3 receptions 47 Yds. Damon Huard 75% comp % with no INTs. Derrick Johnson 1 forced fumble, 1 int. Dorsey and Tank Tyler stuffing the middle. Herb Taylor filling in for Brandon Albert.
* Kolby Smith doing the Tomahawk Chop
* Young Chiefs Defense becoming ball hawks. Every play the Chiefs defense was ripping at the ball. The result was two fumbles recovered and two interceptions.
* Our young CBs holding their own. Carr had 2 Tackles, 3 passes defended, an interception and a fumble recovery. Flowers had 7 Tackles, 2 passes defended and a fumble recovery. Dmitri Patterson had 8 Combined Tackles.
* Larry Johnson runs for 198 yards and 2 TDs
* Arrowhead Stadium rocking the whole game instead of booing.
* Chiefs score 32 points. (what is this? the arena league?)
* Herm going on the field to check on Tony G when he was hurt (which he NEVER does)
* Denver Broncos only had 94 yards total rushing.
*Dantrelle Savages 51 yard Kickoff Return when we needed it most.
* LJ smiling

Chiefs to Trim Roster to 53 Players
**UPDATE SAT. 5 PM** Final cuts have been made. Head here.
Of course, the 53 players on the team after 5 PM central time tonight won't be the exact roster for opening day. After the NFL roster deadline hits this evening, expect the Kansas City Chiefs to pick up one or two players off of the waiver wire.
I've run through the roster and made my decisions on who I think will be cut. Interestingly enough, while researching this and reading others cut lists, most of them are in agreement about 95% of the time.
The only differences I've seen in people's cut lists are the tail ends of the linebacker and line rotations. A little LeRue Rumph here. A little Anthony Alabi there. Maybe throw in some Sippio. (Update: Sippio apparently has been cut)
There isn't anything groundbreaking in this post because it's pretty easy to pick about 90% of this roster with about that same certainty.
QB: Brodie Croyle, Tyler Thigpen and Damon Huard
No surprises here. The Chiefs will carry three quarterbacks on the final roster no matter what and these are almost assuredly the three they will keep.
Cut: None
RB: Larry Johnson, Kolby Smith, Jamaal Charles, Jackie Battle and Dantrell Savage
Dantrell Savage hopefully makes this team as a kick returner but I've included him in the running backs section. LJ, Kolby and Jamaal Charles are all 100% safe. Battle may not make it because of roster numbers but he's probably safe too.
Cut: None
WR: Dwayne Bowe, Devard Darling, Will Franklin, Maurice Price and Jeff Webb
Despite not catching a pass this preseason, Devard Darling is still accomplished enough to get the nod over Arthur, Joachim, McMahan and Sippio. If you make an argument against Darling, you have to make an argument for one of those guys making the team and I don't think you can. Maybe you can make an argument for Bobby Sippio but I think you're splitting hairs at that point.(Update: Sippio has apparently been cut)
Cut: Jabari Arthur, Sergio Joachim, Kevin McMahan and Bobby Sippio
FB:Mike Cox and Chris Manderino
Word on the street is that the Chiefs like Manderino's special teams play, which is great for him because Mike Cox has the starting fullback spot nailed.
Cut: None
TE: Tony Gonzalez, Brad Cottam and J.P. Foschi
TG and Cottam are locks to make the roster and we'll give Foschi and his GA Tech roots the nod over the injured Mike Merritt and Michael "What happened to people being excited about me?" Allan. Allan may spend his final year on the practice squad before permanently falling off into obscurity. My future money says this is another D3 experiment that will not succeed.
Cut: Michael Allan and Mike Merritt
O-Line: Branden Albert, Brian Waters, Rudy Niswanger, Adrian Jones, Damion McIntosh, Herb Taylor, Barry Richardson and Wade Smith
I think those first eight offensive linemen I listed are definitely going to make the team. Beyond that, I think we could see another player dropped at a different position in favor of another offensive linemen. That linemen may not even be on the team right now and there is no way the Chiefs are satisfied with the depth they have on the offensive line.
Cut: Travis Leffew, Tre Stallings, Will Svitek, Anthony Alabi, Edwin Harrison and Rob Smith
D-Line: Turk McBride, Tank Tyler, Glenn Dorsey, Tamba Hali, Alfonso Boone, Ron Edwards. T.J. Jackson and Brian Johnston
After Ron Edwards, you're entering a pretty blurry area on the defensive line. TJ Jackson and Brian Johnston both had their names called more than a few times last Thursday against the Rams and that may be enough to distinguish themselves from the other defensive linemen.
Cut: Johnny Dingle, Jason Parker and Derek Lokey
LB: Derrick Johnson, Pat Thomas, Donnie Edwards, Demorrio Williams, Weston Dacus and Nap Harris (Int'l player Aden Durde will be on the practice squad but not count for a spot)
Nap Harris seems to be on everyone else's cut list and he certainly is a possible roster casualty. One of the cuts listed below could out value Harris on special teams, making the decision to keep him even more difficult. Donnie Edwards of course makes the final cut but how durable will he be in his 13th season? He's already tweaked a hamstring.
Cut: EJ Kuale, Steve Octavien and LeRue Rumph
CB: Patrick Surtain, Brandon Flowers, Brandon Carr, Dimitri Patterson, Tyron Brackenridge and Maurice Leggett
The first four CB spots are taken with Brackenridge, Barksdale and Leggett battling for the final one or even two spots. Can't say I've seen much of any of those three this preseason, making my analysis a bit strained. Brackenridge will probably get the nod because the Chiefs liked him enough last year as an UDFA to play him a bit and neither Barksdale nor Leggett has distinguished themselves.
Cut: Rashard Barksdale>
S: Jarrad Page, Bernard Pollard, Jon McGraw and DaJuan Morgan
The safety position isn't difficult to figure out. Page and Pollard will start with McGraw and Morgan rotating in and out. The Chiefs don't need five safeties on the team.
Cut: Khayyam Burns
Special Teams: Nick Novak, Dustin Colquitt and J.P. Darche
Again, no surprises here. The Sams v. Savage competition is pretty much even but I'll throw my support behind the younger, less Drummond-like Dantrell Savage. My gut says Sams makes the team though but I can't bring myself to post that.
Cut: BJ Sams and Connor Barth (he's still on the roster so we'll include him for good measure)
We've already had a few threads about the roster cuts so use this spot to make any last minute predictions. I'll update you on the cuts as soon as I hear about them.

Chiefs looking more and more homegrown.
There were a couple nuggets of information that have arisen today regarding the "pure Chief"-afication of this team.
1st, as you've already read below, Teicher is reporting that Herm is pondering replacing Damion "Mr. Glass" McIntosh at RT with Herb Taylor when Branden Albert returns from his injury. (Who wouldn't love that idea!?)
2nd, mammoth run-stuffer Ron Edwards has just been replaced on the first-string DL by mammoth run-stuffer Tank Tyler, per Mr. Teicher once again.
I'm so happy I could kiss Teicher's bald, or balding, or half of a head, whichever it is.
Truly adopting the Tony Dungy trademark of creating a team that is built entirely from the Draft rather than focused on free agency, the Chiefs have a team that is now (by my particular calculations) 75% homegrown Chiefs.
My math is as follows...

Weekend Training Camp Round Up
For you new readers out there, 99.9% of the time I post something by 8 AM. Each morning during training camp, I'll post the latest updates from the various outlets that are at training camp, as well as posting throughout the day. Selah.

Happy Monday morning to you all. I trust the first weekend of the Kansas City Chiefs training camp treated you well. There were three practices over the weekend. We've covered Saturday in our previous posts (scroll down if you're on the homepage and you'll see them), so here's a bit about Sunday.
The Chiefs offense and defense ran 43 plays of teamwork against each other. The defense looked good at times, but overall the offense was very sluggish. Essentially, the offense had 16 positive plays in those 43 plays. Positive is defined as a running play that broke into the second level of the defense or a completed pass. Quarterbacks were eight of 17 with at least two sacks and three dropped passes. Defensively, MLB Napoleon Harris and DE Brian Johnston had the sacks, DT T.J. Jackson had a stop in the backfield, as did DE Alfonso Boone. CB Brandon Flowers dropped a possible INT.
For those of you who haven't checked out BobGretz.com, it has quickly become one of the top places to get your first hand training camp news. Mr. Gretz is there at camp and delivering updates daily. And I don't have to tell you that the guy knows his football. I'm very thankful to have such a great resource on hand. You should be too.
- Larry Johnson sat out of a regular running back drill, possibly indicating that Herm isn't going to press LJ too much this camp.
- QB Tyler Thigpen worked with the second-string team and Damon Huard with the third-string. Can we please trade Damon Huard already?
- CB Maurice Leggett injured his finger but came back to practice.
- Damion McIntosh still doesn't sound happy about moving to right tackle - "I’m a ball player. When I’m asked to do something, I do it."
- I love this quote from Tank - ""I’ve been practicing all summer long because I wasn’t satisfied with last season."
- Rookie TE Brad Cottam on the Chiefs - "I don’t think I could have walked into a better situation."
There's plenty of stuff in the UW-RF update, so let's dig through it and talk about it. I'm still figuring out exactly how I'm going to post these updates so bear with me as I experiment. Whoops...almost forgot that the mothership was doing updates as well.
It may be 8 AM but pull up a chair at our online pub and let's talk some Chiefs! What else are you going to do? Work? Nah...

The Most Intriguing Match Ups: Week 2
Tankville...where running backs come to retire.
The Kansas City Chiefs open up Arrowhead Stadium for 2008 play in Week 2 against the Oakland Raiders. Both teams were 4-12 last year, with the Raiders taking one in KC and the Chiefs taking a win in Oakland.
The tempting match up to point out is the newly souped up Raiders' secondary against the Chiefs' young corp of receivers. The addition of former Falcon Pro Bowl CB DeAngelo Hall catapults this secondary into probably one of the best in the league. A Hall-Bowe matchup sounds great to watch but it won't be the most intriguing. We know Dwayne Bowe is fantastic and we don't need a good performance against the Raiders to prove it again.
I again think that the most interesting data from this game will come from the defensive line. The Chiefs squeaked in at 28th overall last year in rushing defense, a mark that absolutely must be improved for the team to progress as a whole. Teams absolutely stomped the Chiefs last year on the ground. Selvin Young and LaDainian Tomlinson had monster days against us, helping bump that 130 yard/game average the Chiefs relinquished last year.
The Raiders will be another early and difficult test for an unproven squad of defensive linemen. Last year, RB Justin Fargas became the first Raider to rush for over 100 yards at Arrowhead since 1978. Highly touted second year RB Michael Bush will get his first chance to play on an NFL field, after spending 2007 on the PUP list.
And there is this other guy they have...McFadden? Yeah, that's it. Darren McFadden. We'll keep an eye on him too.
In other words, the Raiders are stacked at running back and should prove to be a worthy challenge to our youngsters on the defensive line.
I'm going to assume a vast improvement over 2007 on the offensive line, which means I'm shifting the utmost importance of development to our defensive line. Worked right, the talent is there on that line to create an intimidating force. Worked wrong, and like our offensive line, the team could be harmed for seasons to come.
To sum it up, the Chiefs have a lot riding on pretty much every position on the team.

The Most Intriguing Match Ups: Week 1
One of our many series that may or may not finish, I'll be taking a look at what I think to be the most interesting individual match ups next season. First up in Week 1, the New England Patriots.
With a new starting cornerback, a second year player in the nickel spot and two safeties with combined experience of four years, the easy answer this week is say watch the Kansas City Chiefs secondary compete against the record setting, All World, yada yada yada New England Patriots offense. I'll admit if the Chiefs are able to at least feign containment on Brady and Moss in Week 1, I'll be impressed. And I do that that would at least vaguely point to developing talent in our secondary if they performed well against the best. But if the Pats destroy the Chiefs secondary, then what will we say? That's what we expected?
That's why I'm going to tell you to watch the Chiefs' Jared Allen-less defensive line against the Patriots' foundation, their offensive line.
Right at the beginning of the season, the Chiefs will have a difficult test to gauge how far (or how steady) the team's 2007 strength has fallen. The Patriots offensive line, while a fantastic unit, is more dependent on the influence of Brady and Moss in that offense than the actual skills of their entire line. For example, only left tackle Matt Light and center Dan Koppen were cemented in their positions last year, with the guards and other tackle able to interchange quickly.
So, if the Chiefs are able to develop a successful pass rush during the game on September 7th, we'll know we have something to build upon.
Frankly, it's time for Tamba Hali to either become a pass rushing force or relegate himself to the "Also played" category of NFL players who had a couple of decent seasons. We will see in Week 1 if Hali is a player on his own or if he needed those dozen or so sacks by Allen the last two seasons to skate under the Chiefs' radar.
The same goes for the defensive tackles in Week 1. Glenn Dorsey gets a big time NFL test in his first game and we hope, we hope to see progress from Tank Tyler or Turk McBride, or both.
In other words, the Chiefs will get to see how immediate of an impact their '07 and '08 draft picks will have.
I know this is a lot of hot, hypothetical air over a game the Kansas City Chiefs will likely get whooped up so bad in that we won't be able to glean any lessons from it. But you see where I'm going with these? As this team changes and grows, what will be revealed to us this season about our current condition? We may lose, but what are we learning? Who can't cut it anymore? Or never could?
Because if you're not a Chiefs fan who is thinking in terms of two to three years down the road, you're setting yourself up for angry disappointment.
