Daunte Culpepper to Visit Chiefs on Tuesday

459863838_a840a81b35_medium

via farm1.static.flickr.com

I don't have much news to report on this other than to say that Jay Glazer of FOX Sports said that Daunte Culpepper will visit the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday, presumably for a workout/tryout due to the demise of 2/3rds of the Chiefs starting quarterback rotation.

Here is a snippet from the Sporting News Blog mentioning the only NFL player I can name that acts as his own agent:

Jay Glazer reported on Fox's pregame show this morning that Daunte Culpepper, retired for less than two months, will be working out for Kansas City this Tuesday. As someone who watched Culpepper struggle to make an impact in Silver and Black last fall, but also someone who has watched part of four KC games this season, can't we work out a deal to get Daunte to New York for this afternoon's Chiefs-Jets game?

Tyler Thigpen played the game of his life today against the New York Jets and I'm supportive of him playing out the rest of season as the starter. Rumor is that Culpepper wasn't interested in the Chiefs earlier this season because we wouldn't give him the chance to be the full-time starter, only to fill in while Brodie Croyle recuperated.

I'm guessing Daunte Culpepper will only become a Chief after Tuesday if KC's brass says he can at least compete for the full-time starting spot. I personally don't see the Chiefs steering away from Tyler Thigpen, especially because Bones is the only Chiefs' QB who can run this offense at the moment. The precise reason that backups Ingle Martin and Quinn Gray haven't taken the field (aside from Martin's, you know, actual football ability) is because of their unfamiliarity with the offense.

Despite the sun breaking through the clouds for a brief moment this afternoon in New York, the Kansas City Chiefs' 2008 season is a waste. The addition of Culpepper doesn't do much except (theoretically) stop the bleeding for a brief time and this fan can't see the long-term value in that.

Assessing Chiefs' Need For 2009 Draft

Bumped this up a few hours. Morning update will come around 8 AM. -Chris

It's never too early, is it? Nah.

I am, nonetheless, an addicted draftnik, to the point where I literally have a tackboard that I keep all my favorite draftees targeted at particular points in the Draft.

But the point of this entry is not necessarily to judge which players we might be more intrigued by (rest assured, there will be plenty of those in the months that come from yours truly). Here, I'm more convinced in our needs. What needs are the most and least pressing for the Chiefs in the 2009 NFL Draft?

A complete and obsessive breakdown follows, after the jump.

Don't Expect A New Kansas City Chiefs Starting Quarterback This Weekend

Herm Edwards said at today's press conference that it would take "at least a couple  of weeks" before a quarterback that isn't currently on the roster to come in and learn the system sufficiently to play.

As of now the situation stands at determining Damon Huard's health.  If he can't go then Tyler Thigpen would be the starter with Ingle Martin backing him up.  The third, or emergency quarterback, would presumably dress with the expectation that he wouldn't play.

Edwards also said he hopes to stabilize the quarterback position by the end of the year.

“I sure hope so. That’d be kind of fun to see a guy play two games in a row for us instead of the merry-go-round that we’re dealing with right now. It’s no one’s fault, it’s just the cards that have been dealt. I think the team has been handling it very well and the quarterbacks that have had to play have handled it well. It makes it hard, game planning every week when you have a different guy behind center.”

"It's no one's fault."  When things go wrong in a business environment it is always someone's fault.  Someone is always responsible.  Accountability is something that needs to happen.

Who, exactly, on this roster is going to stabilize the quarterback position?  Damon Huard obviously isn't the answer.  Tyler Thigpen should barely be trusted to hold the clipboard.  The fact that Thigpen is ahead of Ingle Martin on the depth chart doesn't bode well for either player.  Who is going to stabilize the position by year's end?

He was then asked whether or not the players believe in the scheme he has been employing.

“Yeah, I believe that. Just haven’t executed. And you can ask the players. They’ll tell you the truth.”

I'm not quite sure what his intentions are here but it sounds an awful lot like someone who is blaming solely the players for the unpreparedness of the team this season.

On Larry Johnson's availability this weekend:

“Right now, Larry will come to work tomorrow. The decision on that will take place when it has to be made. I don’t have to make the decision on who’s starting and who’s not starting. So that’s kind of where that’s at. Whatever I do, I think hopefully you know me by now, people know me by now, I’m going to do the right thing for the football team, and that’s where it stands with me. So that’s where we’re at."

I'm used to Herm talking a lot without really saying anything but from this I can gather that Larry Johnson will not be in uniform this weekend, whether that's a result of a decision made by the League or the team.

Chief Cut and Promote to Make Room for QB Ingle Martin

Going to Kansas City, Kansas City here I come (Photo source)

What did we do before BobGretz.com? I'll tell you what I did - obsessively watch the online Kansas City Chiefs roster in order to figure out who was gone, promoted or added when there was a roster shake up like yesterdays.

The also elevated to the 53-man roster from their own practice squad WR Marques Hagans, a former college quarterback at the University of Virginia.

To make room for Martin and Hagans, the Chiefs released RB Jackie Battle and WR Maurice Price with plans of adding them to the practice squad in time for Wednesday’s workout.

I'd imagine Jackie Battle and Maurice Price pass through waivers and end up on the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad. I think we get a bit of tunnel vision (all fans do) about these more unknown guys and think they're worth more than they really are.

I will tell you this and I know I sound like a broken record. B.J. Sams or Dantrell Savage needed to be cut yesterday in favor or Battle or Price. You can't carry two kick returners and if I had my choice, Sams would be #1 on my cut list and probably everyone else's as well. Keep this in mind though - just promoted WR Marques Hagans has experience returning kicks so he could prove to be the backup that the Chiefs are using Sams for right now.

As for Ingle Martin's tenure, I'd imagine it lasts until Brodie Croyle gets back and then he's let go. Then we'll go through a similar process of drops, promotions and pick ups on the Chiefs roster. Margues Hagans did play some quarterback in college, which I bet makes him the Chiefs emergency QB.

Here is the top of my cut list right now: KR B.J. Sams and QB Tyler Thigpen. Both are poor enough that I think almost any replacement will improve the Chiefs. Keep in mind you can't quickly make up for knowing an offense scheme intimately, which Thigpen does more so than any recent addition to the roster. I bet that's one reason he's still around.

Do you agree with the Chiefs trying to put Battle and Price on the practice squad?

Chiefs Sign QB Ingle Martin

Not Chris Simms or Tim Rattay but former Titan practice squad QB Ingle Martin was signed today by the Kansas City Chiefs (or he'll be signed tomorrow technically but he'll be on the team).

Quarterback Ingle Martin on Tuesday agreed to terms with the Kansas City Chiefs after the team offered him a spot on the their 53-man roster.

The Titans had a chance to promote Martin from their practice squad to the 53-man roster to keep him, but opted not to. Martin starred locally at Montgomery Bell Academy and spent all of last season on the team’s practice squad.

Even though Vince Young is currently injured, the Titans let Martin slip away from their practice squad. More info on Martin is here.

We're still waiting to see who was dropped from the 53-man roster to make room for Martin.

H/T to Jimmy from Music City Miracles.
