Checking In On The Injured Chiefs

Photo

The Kansas City Chiefs had all the players under contract in attendance yesterday but not all of them were participating. Seven total players did not participate in the initial OTA due to injury, according to reports from Adam Teicher of the KC Star and Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com. They have a lot more detail on the OTAs and what went down at Arrowhead yesterday.

I'm taking a look at the injured guys that didn't participate in practice, starting with the ACL crew...

Chiefs QB Matt Cassel On Criticisms, Game Managers And More

Photo

Danny Parkins and Carrington Harrison of 610 Sports landed an interview with Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel on Monday. We know Cassel is a fairly private person and, even as Chiefs fans, we don't know a whole lot about him after three-plus years.

He said that it doesn't really bother him that others don't know a lot about him but he did go down a few personal things about himself, including: his mom, a set designer, has won an Emmy; his two brothers both play baseball; he rode a horse to school when he was younger; he lived through the earthquake in California; he likes all kinds of music, including rap and rock.

"I felt like if people needed to know so much about me then I'd let them know," Cassel said. "It is important for people to know that there is a different side to me than just football and there's a different side to me than just the Matt Cassel you see when I'm up at a podium and questions are being posed to you."

And so Danny Parkins said before Cassel came on that he was going to "humanize" him. Check out the audio of the interview to see if Danny succeeded.

I pulled out a few quotes from the interview, which is really good and worth your time to listen to the whole thing. Parkins asked Cassel about a lot of the criticism he's received from the media, including from Parkins himself.

VIDEO: RGIII, Trent Richardson And Others Last Weekend

The video above will show you how I spent my weekend in Los Angeles. Myself and other members of SB Nation made the trip to California for the NFLPA Rookie Premiere last weekend and on one of those days we went to the Rose Bowl where the rookies were participating in a photo shoot with the trading card companies.

It was the first time most of them were in full uniform so it was pretty cool to see. It was also an environment in which the players were very relaxed and having fun, which made for a great video. Definitely take a minute to check it out.

Several players took the SB Nation mic and did our work for us interviewing other rookies. Among those who took our mic were Redskins QB Robert Griffin III, Browns RB Trent Richardson, Giants RB David Wilson and Colts TE Dwayne Allen, who interviewed Colts QB Andrew Luck.

I found out for myself what others have said: RGIII is the man. I can't say enough about that guy. Despite conducting interview after interview, he was personable and engaging every time we interacted with him, as you can see in the video. Trent Richardson, who I thought was more of a quiet and serious person, was also very funny in interviewing other players at the Rose Bowl.

Check out the whole video above, and keep an eye on more videos from the weekend that we'll be rolling out at our YouTube page. I have a write-up on the day over at SBNation.com.

Kansas City Chiefs Sign A Free Agent Receiver

Photo

The Kansas City Chiefs announced the arrival of a new free agent -- Aaron Weaver. A receiver out of Syracuse (and before that, Hofstra), Weaver played 26 career games in college and caught 141 balls for an average of 10.6 yards per catch.

I don't know a whole lot about this guy. Here's his bio from the Chiefs:
Weaver (6'2", 220) transferred to Syracuse in 2010 after Hofstra eliminated its football program. Prior to his time with Syracuse, Weaver played three seasons with the Pride. His career numbers include 26 games played, 141 receptions for 1,504 yards (10.6 avg.) and nine touchdowns. While at Hofstra, he led the team in receptions in 2009 and earned second-team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors in 2008 after leading the Pride in receptions, punt return and kickoff return average and all purpose yards. Born in Long Island, N.Y., Weaver prepped at Baldwin High School, where he served as a team captain.

By my count, Weaver becomes the 88th player on the Chiefs roster.

Kansas City Chiefs OTAs Are Missing Just One Player

Photo

Our old friend Field Yates wrote a story on the New England Patriots OTAs for ESPN Boston this week and he relied on his experience with the Kansas City Chiefs to talk about the importance of perfect attendance at these offseason workouts.

He should know because the 2010 Kansas City Chiefs (of which he was a part) had perfect attendance after their "momentum-building throttling" of the Denver Broncos (44-24) in the 2009 season finale.
What appeared to be a strong draft and free agency period created even more buzz, and it showed when we opened our OTAs with perfect attendance. Attendance remained perfect through the conclusion of OTAs, and that played a part in our team continuing the offseason with a strong training camp and subsequently three wins to open the year.
Back then, it was only technically perfect attendance, as it is today. Two years ago Jarrad Page hadn't signed his tender and didn't participate in the Chiefs offseason. This year, Dwayne Bowe hasn't signed his franchise tender and hasn't participated in the Chiefs offseason. He's the only player missing.

So it technically wasn't perfect attendance back then and it's technically not perfect attendance now, either. But of all the players under contract? Yeah, the Chiefs have perfect attendance. Bowe and first round pick Dontari Poe are the only two unsigned players to which the Chiefs have the rights.

New KC Chiefs Players Talk About Getting Back At It

Photo

The Kansas City Chiefs have nearly 90 players under contract which means there are a ton of new faces at the start of OTAs. The Chiefs added a few key starters in free agency, along eight draft picks and 15 undrafted free agents, among other signings.

A lot has changed out at Arrowhead. A number of the new players, including Eric Winston, Brady Quinn, Stanford Routt and a few of the rookies, spoke about getting back at it this offseason, except with a new team.

Arrowheadlines: Chiefs News 5/22

Photo

Good morning! Thanks to OTAs, we have a full morning of Kansas City Chiefs news. Enjoy!

Football returned to the Truman Sports Complex Monday morning with the first OTA session of the Romeo Crennel era.

Crennel's first on-field practice as Chiefs head coach lasted approximately 90 minutes and included several periods of competitive work matching the offense against the defense.

OTA Notebook: Opening Day from The Mothership

Even if the Chiefs finish the 2012 season in the Super Bowl, they won't necessarily recall Monday as the day it all began. They held their first full-squad offseason practice, sure, but it was more of a get-to-know-you kind of affair.

They worked for about an hour and a half but, since they couldn't wear full pads, they did so without contact. Still, that's more than they've done in the offseason for two years - last year's offseason was disrupted by the lockout - so they were grateful for any work they could get.

Dexter McCluster Says 'It Felt Great' To Be Back At Receiver

Photo

Well then. Shows how much we know.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Dexter McCluster was mainly a receiver in 2010, running back in 2011 and now, at least one the first day of OTAs, back to receiver. There are a couple of reports, including this one from the Star, about McCluster moving back to receiver in the first day of OTAs.
