I saw a post from our friends over at Field Gulls looking at their depth chart when Pete Carroll first took over. Like any good NFL writer I stole their idea and am using it myself.
Remember what the Chiefs depth chart looked like when Andy Reid and John Dorsey took over? This is the first depth chart they issued training camp of their first season (2013).
OFFENSE
WR: Dwayne Bowe, Dexter McCluster, Junior Hemingway, Terrance Copper, Tyler Shoemaker, Jamar Newsome, Rico Richardson
WR: Jon Baldwin, Donnie Avery, Devon Wylie, Josh Bellamy, Frankie Hammond Jr.
Not one player on this list is still a Chief. The Chiefs signed Dwayne Bowe to the big deal right after they got here, Donnie Avery was a free agent signing, Jon Baldwin was about to be traded. Looks a lot different today.
LT: Branden Albert, Donald Stephenson, Dustin Waldron
LG: Jeff Allen, Matt Reynolds
C: Rodney Hudson, Eric Kush, A.J. Hawkins
RG: Jon Asamoah, Ryan Durand, Rokevious Watkins, Tommie Draheim
RT: Eric Fisher, Geoff Schwartz, Steven Baker
One player remains and he’s not even in the same position: Eric Fisher, who is now the left tackle. Albert would eventually go to Miami, Jeff Allen to Houston, Rodney Hudston to Oakland, Jon Asamoah to Atlanta and Geoff Schwartz to SB Nation.
TE: Anthony Fasano, Travis Kelce, Tony Moeaki, Kevin Brock, Demetrius Harris
The first position that’s somewhat similar. Kelce and Harris are the No. 1 and 2 here now. Fasano is still playing! Moeaki re-surfaced now and again in tryouts.
QB: Alex Smith, Chase Daniel, Tyler Bray, Ricky Stanzi
Alex Smith and Tyler Bray remain. Chase Daniel left New Orleans for KC then Philadelphia and now back to New Orleans. Ricky Stanzi is reportedly playing in a spring league coming up.
RB: Jamaal Charles, Knile Davis, Shaun Draughn, Cyrus Gray, Jordan Roberts
All gone. Charcandrick West wouldn’t come around for another year and Spencer Ware for another two years.
FB: Anthony Sherman, Braden Wilson, Toben Opurum
Sherman!
DEFENSE
LDE: Tyson Jackson, Allen Bailey, Austen Lane, Mike Catapano
NT: Dontari Poe, Jerrell Powe, Miguel Chavis
RDE: Mike DeVito, Anthony Toribio, Marcus Dixon, Rob Lohr
Allen Bailey remains while Dontari Poe just went to Atlanta after Tyson Jackson was cut by Atlanta. Mike DeVito retired and remember Anthony Toribio?
LOLB: Justin Houston, Frank Zombo, Josh Martin
ROLB: Tamba Hali, Edgar Jones, Ridge Wilson
When we talk about the Chiefs pass rushers needing some more talent, this is part of the reason why. Dee Ford isn’t here yet but Houston, Hali and Zombo were prominent players back then and they are now (Tamba less so).
LILB: Akeem Jordan, Nico Johnson, Orie Lemon
RILB: Derrick Johnson, Zac Diles, Darin Drakeford, Chad Kilgore
The Chiefs looked for someone to play next to Derrick Johnson for years and mostly got one year players. They found someone they like in Ramik Wilson (after drafting, cutting and re-signing him) but only because DJ was hurt.
LCB: Brandon Flowers, Jalil Brown, Vince Agnew, Greg Castillo, Conroy Black
RCB: Sean Smith, Dunta Robinson, Neiko Thorpe, Kamaal McIlwain
Dunta Robinson, I remember him. Brandon Flowers was recently cut by San Diego.
SS: Eric Berry, Quintin Demps, Bradley McDougald, Otha Foster III
FS: Kendrick Lewis, Husain Abdullah, Tysyn Hartman, Malcolm Bronson, Sanders Commings
Berry and Lewis looked like a strong duo for a few years. Ron Parker and Husain Abdullah ended up being pretty darn good, too. Sanders Commings plays baseball now.
