The Kansas City Chiefs picked quarterback in the first round so we can remove that from their list of needs.
(Let’s take a moment to bask in this glory. The Chiefs don’t need a quarterback because they drafted one IN THE FIRST ROUND).
The Chiefs still have needs left. Let’s take a look at their top needs along with some of the best available players in round two.
Cornerback: Remember Chiefs GM John Dorsey said this was the deepest corner class he can remember in at least 10 years. So does that mean the Chiefs get a great one in the second round or they wait later to still get a good one? The Chiefs had six defensive backs on the field last year for almost half their plays. They’ll use a corner. Sidney Jones, who is recovering from an Achilles, or Obi Melifonwu, who tested like a freak athlete, are ones to watch. Kevin King, a long corner, is also available.
Inside linebacker: I know people put this at the top of their needs lists but I wonder how the Chiefs view it. Derrick Johnson still has two years left on his deal. He intends to play that out. Do the Chiefs believe DJ will be healthy? Could that buy them a year on finding another inside ‘backer? Zach Cunningham out of Vanderbilt is someone often mocked to KC in round one.
Running back: Like inside linebacker, it’s a big need but it’s also a position you can find later on, too. Dalvin Cook is there and Alvin Kamara is too. Both those are guys that would interest me. Perhaps D’onta Foreman in the third. Curtis Samuel is another one although it depends if the Chiefs view him more as a back or a receiver.
Pass rusher: The Chiefs have pass rushers, it’s just that there are questions with all of them: Justin Houston (knee injury), Tamba Hali (old), Dee Ford (contract year). They could add a pass rusher to prepare for Ford’s possible exit (oh, hey, the Chiefs need to decide on his fifth-year option next week). Which pass rusher? Jordan Willis out of Kansas State (and Rockhurst!) tested like a freak athlete at a position where you need freaks. Terez Paylor of the Star mocked Houston pass rusher Tyus Bowser to the Chiefs once.
Defensive line: The Chiefs lost Dontari Poe and Jaye Howard this offseason and Bennie Logan is on a one-year deal. This isn’t a big need in 2017 but it is after that and these guys take time to develop. Malik McDowell is the big name still remaining here. Some have compared him to Chris Jones.
