The Kansas City Chiefs drafted a first round quarterback and no I’m not lying. It’s Patrick Mahomes for the Chiefs. He walks into a perfect situation in Kansas City. I explain why...
Mahomes could sit for a year
Alex Smith has two more years left on his deal so he could sit for two more years. If Alex Smith takes the Chiefs to, say, the AFC Championship game this year, they’re not going to get rid of him of the next year. So two years is possible.
The Chiefs have a great roster
They’re strong from top to bottom. This isn’t a 2-14 team that a quarterback is walking into. This is a 12-4 team that’s been to the playoffs three of the past four years. They’re ready to win whenever Mahomes steps in.
The Andy Reid factor
He is good with quarterbacks. Look at what he’s done with Alex Smith (you laugh but I’m serious - he got a lot out of Alex). Folks around the league talk about his quarterback abilities. I can not wait to see him work with somebody fresh.
The weapons on offense
Travis Kelce is a top tight end and Tyreek Hill is up and coming. Jeremy Maclin may not be as big of a factor in a year or two when Mahomes is playing but he’s another weapon.
The Chiefs have a good offensive line
And it’s getting better. They’re young and will be around together for a couple years. This is a good line that’s getting better. In a year or two when Mahomes is ready they’ll be even better.
