We ask you to grade each KC Chiefs draft pick right after it’s made. I know you’re not supposed to grade a draft pick for three years or whatever but that’s no fun. What is fun is looking back at our initial reactions of a draft pick, like when Jon Baldwin was going to transform the Chiefs in the red zone or when Dexter McCluster was going to be Percy Harvin or when we wondered if Chris Jones had character concerns (note: we now know he has the opposite of character concerns).
I went back and looked at how we graded the Chiefs first round picks the past three years, which includes Dee Ford (2014), Marcus Peters (2015) and Chris Jones (2016 - yes, he’s a second round pick but I’m going to include him anyway).
The results for Peters and Jones are pretty similar. Roughly 80 percent gave it an A or B while fewer than 10 percent gave it a D or F.
Ford, we had barely mentioned him as an option as you can tell by his results below. He was most often mocked in the second round.
None of these players were very much on our radar before the draft. Peters was connected to the Chiefs the day before the draft. That’s pretty much the only coverage we gave him. Jones was mocked to KC by Terez Paylor but I didn’t notice that until after he was drafted.
Check it out ... (and note that I called Chris Jones a first round pick in our poll last year ... I made that mistake about a million times - and still do!)
