Not very many people say their team is a trade-up candidate. It seems like everyone wants to trade down and get more picks.
This year, I see the Chiefs as a trade-up candidate.
There could be a run on quarterbacks. The Chiefs have worked out or visited with every one of the top quarterbacks. They’ve shown a lot of interest. If there’s one close to the 27th pick, they could trade up a few spots for their guy (like they reportedly tried to do for Paxton Lynch last year). The Texans, picking two spots ahead of the Chiefs, are one to watch.
I don’t see 10 draft picks making the roster. They cut a third and a fifth round pick last year. I would rather use that second round pick or two third round picks to move up and get the guy you want if that means the difference between a Marcus Peters and a KeiVarae Russell. The Chiefs roster is too strong for 10 picks.
Now, I have no idea who they could possibly be trading up for. A quarterback? Pass rusher? Cornerback? I don’t know and neither does Chiefs GM John Dorsey because he doesn’t know every pick either (he does know their hand size though). I imagine draft week is probably when he begins making plans to potentially move up. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what the Chiefs do.
