The Kansas City Chiefs’ Eric Berry and Dontari Poe are scheduled to be free agents after the 2016 season. Whether they actually make it to free agency remains to be seen.
Most Chiefs fans know that both will be free agents next year. We went over that when the franchise tag decision came down to Eric Berry and then the two sides failed to reach a deal. We really wanted the Chiefs to sign Berry so that hit would free up the franchise tag for Poe next season. However, that didn’t happen.
That brings us to 2017. ESPN’s John Clayton looked at the top 25 free agents next season and included both these Chiefs. Berry was ranked 8th and Poe was ranked 23rd.
Berry as a top 10 free agent? It’s still crazy to me that he could be a free agent. I still believe the most likely scenario here is Berry signing a long-term deal, even if the two sides were reportedly way off in negotiations.
I would say that Poe should probably be a little higher. He’s not Kawann Short, the No. 1 ranked free agent next year but he’s tougher to replace than some of the offensive guards listed ahead of him.
