I saw a good question in Herbie Teope's mailbag over at Chiefs Digest that I'm going to steal.
How many Chiefs draft picks will end up making the initial 53-man roster?
Second round pick DL Chris Jones and third round pick CB KeiVarae Russell are locks. Jones may not start but he'll be in the defensive line rotation while Russell very well could snag the second or third cornerback spot.
Fourth round picks are usually locks. That's good news for OL Parker Ehinger, CB Eric Murray and WR Demarcus Robinson. The Chiefs spent a sixth round pick on guards a couple years ago and each stayed on the 53-man roster all season - Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and Zach Fulton. It's a good bet Ehinger makes it as the Chiefs need guard and depth help. Murray is one of three Chiefs cornerbacks and even without seeing him play is a good bet to make the roster.
The Chiefs have a little more competition going at receiver so Robinson is more interesting than the others. Jeremy Maclin, Chris Conley, Albert Wilson, Rod Sreater, DaRon Brown, Mike Williams ... Robinson will have to beat someone out.
Fifth round pick Kevin Hogan should make it, right? That means the Chiefs would likely cut Aaron Murray or Tyler Bray, assuming they only keep three quarterbacks.
Tyreek Hill is also in the fifth round. Ignoring his background for a minute, which brings about its own questions, Hill looks like a return man / gadget type player in the mold of Dexter McCluster and De'Anthony Thomas. Guessing he makes it but no sure thing.
Sixth round picks are no lock to make it. The Chiefs cut a sixth round fullback before the season started a couple years ago. DJ White was third round value in the sixth according to one analyst so that's a positive. Dadi Nicolas needs work but he's a pass rusher and the Chiefs need some depth at pass rusher.
it's only a few days after the draft when it seems like every player is a perfect fit. We know that won't be the case. The Chiefs probably won't have all nine draft picks make the team. A couple might make the practice squad. Another could just not be a fit and get cut. I'm just not sure who those players are right now. The final three picks - Hill, White and Nicolas - are good places to start. Robinson also seems to have his work cut out for him at receiver.
The Chiefs roster is deep enough that I don't think all nine picks will end up on the 53-man roster. How many do make it?
