2015 third round pick Steven Nelson projected as a slot corner for the Kansas City Chiefs but didn't play much as a rookie. Both Nelson and the Chiefs hope that changes in 2016.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid was asked Tuesday about Nelson, who played both inside and outside cornerback at Tuesday's practice (emphasis mine).
“Yeah, he played both inside and outside today," Reid said via quotes from the Chiefs, "but he made some plays in the inside with the first group there. He really started picking up towards the end of last year. I thought he kind of took off the last quarter of the season. We were excited to see if he’d continue to grow at that inside position. He made some nice plays today. That’s positive.”
Inside. I've been guessing that, if Phillip Gaines returns fully healthy, he and Marcus Peters will be on the outside while someone else - perhaps Nelson - is on the inside. The Chiefs also have their three draft picks to consider too. Many teams are playing with three receivers all the time so that third corner spot is key for the Chiefs, especially after they were exposed last year when Gaines went down.
I would also caution you on Nelson. When Gaines went down last year the Chiefs needed someone to play on the inside but the coaching staff gave Nelson only 53 snaps all season. So there will likely need to be a pretty sizable jump for him to get on the field this year.
The KC Star's Blair Kerkhoff has a nice read on Nelson, who will be one of the key players to watch during OTAs.
