The Kansas City Chiefs are back at it on Tuesday for the first of their 10 OTAs, which stands for organized team activities. In other words, a practice.
This isn't a typical training camp practice because there is no live contact. This is the third phase of the offseason where players can do a little more like get on the field and do some 11-on-11 drills but they're still not tackling. And until you can tackle, your evaluations are going to be incomplete.
OTAs: May 24-26, May 31, June 1-2, June 7-10
Mandatory minicamp: June 14-16
We have the question of who will show up to these OTAs. Eric Berry has not signed his franchise tender so I'm not expecting to see him. Justin Houston has been working out on his own so I'm not expecting him to be there either. Berry will be back at some point while Houston continues to recover from an ACL injury. The Chiefs are hoping he's back in the first half of the season.
There's also the question of whether school will prohibit any players from participating in OTAs. There is a weird NFL rule that your school has to graduate before participating in OTAs so some schools - Ohio State, for one - operates on a quarter system and their graduation date isn't until later. Kevin Hogan out of Stanford is one to keep an eye on unless he already fulfilled his requirements.
