Revisionism Street (with apologies to Bob Seeger)

(this was started as a reply to a fanpost, but sort of outgrew the reply size)

As this whole Houston contract thing began to play out, several questions came to mind. First, Dorsey didn't seem to have a sense of urgency. I mean, it was obvious we needed to create some cap space, and in a hurry. DeVito need to go. Daniels needed to go. Something needed to be done about Hali's contract. However, with the exception of Avery, Jenkins, and Fasano, nothing's been done to clear cap space.

Then, last night I saw the NBC report that Houston's agent will aggressively persue contract offers from other teams. I had an epiphany. Dorsey's known Houston's contract was going to be a problem since before training camp last year, when Houston's agent wouldn't talk about a new contract. Viewing recent Chiefs' events from this standpoint makes some sense, and may explain some questionable moves.

If we analyze events in the context of Dorsey knowing that Houston's new contract was going to be problem, some things make more sense. First, back to last year's draft. Ford wasn't chosen as a replacement for Hali, he was chosen as a potential replacement for Houston. Second, the lack of immediate activity concerning Hali's contract status makes more sense if Hali is viewed as the OLB WHO IS STAYING (and playing), rather than a player whose role will be deminishing. Third is the question of why Dorsey gave Houston the "non-exclusive" tag. Is he inviting suitors?

Finally, what if this isn't a day-dream? What are the possibilities? There are several teams far under the cap limit, who could easily afford Houston at a Watt-like contract. Indy, Jax , Cleveland, and the Raiders would be the main suitors. This will sound very strange coming from a true Chiefs' fan, but I'm hoping the Raiders go after him, and quickly. If a deal were done comfortably before the draft, we could get the Raiders' pick this year, #4 overall. We conceiveably could replace Houston with Fowler, and we'd still have two #1's next year. This could be attractive to the Raiders, too. They could feel they then had the best tandem of OLB's in the league, with Mack and Houston.

Hope you've enjoyed my revisionist history lesson.
