Safeties and Super Bowls

With the 2015 NFL draft is fast approaching, AP users are revealing their wish lists and mock drafts. Teams will be drafting with the same goal in mind: build a championship team. Wide receiver, offensive line and inside linebacker seem to be positions most Chiefs fans are clamoring for. Based on their abysmal production in 2014,those three positions are certainly in need of upgrades .

Chiefs fans are also divided on whether or not this team is capable of competing for a Super Bowl with Alex Smith as the quarterback. Quarterback is far and away the most important position in football...Championship teams (more often than not) have elite quarterbacks. That said, there is another common trend among Super Bowl winning teams: Elite safeties.

This is not just a modern trend. From the steel curtain's Donnie Shell to the explosive Ronnie Lott's champion 49ers, and all the way up to Earl Thomas and Cam Chancellor turning QB gods into mortals on their way to a 2014 Super Bowl. According to pro football focus, this years Super Bowl champions boasted two of the top 12 safeties in the NFL (McCourty and Chung). Here is a look at some recent Super Bowl winners and their safeties; notice any commonalities?

New England (2014, 2005, 2004, 2002): Devin McCourty and Patrick Chung; Rodney Harrison/Lawyer Milloy

Seattle (2014): Earl Thomas/Cam Chancellor

Baltimore (2013, 2001): Ed Reed/Bernard Pollard; Rod Woodson

New Orleans (2010): Darren Sharper/Roman Harper

Pittsburgh (2009): Troy Polomalu, Ryan Clark)

Tampa Bay (2003): Jon Lynch, Ronde Barber

The Chiefs defense played well last season. Despite the Eric Berry loss, Hussein Abdullah and Ron Parker played adequate. That said, imagine what the defense would have been like with a ball-hawk at free safety. The chiefs had a paltry 6 interceptions all year. Berry's absence no doubt contributed to the lousy run defense.

Kansas City is fully loaded with draft picks this time around. Hopefully Dorsey uses one of them on the next HOF safety-The Lombardi trophy is counting on it.
