Chiefs' Evaluation Phase Ends In 34-14 Loss To Packers from Chiefs Spin
Forget the final score from Thursday night's preseason game because this was about evaluation.
Was the 34-14 loss to the Green Bay Packers ugly? Of course, but the contest was devoid of starters for the most part, especially on offense.
A win is always nice, but the goal entering the preseason finale was to allow the coaching staff a look at mostly backups before finalizing the 53-man roster.
A Lot Can Change In The NFL In 10 Days -- And For The Chiefs, That's the Best News Of All from FS Kansas City
A year ago at this time, the Kansas City Chiefs' leading tackler was Tysyn Hartman. Their third leading stopper was Vince Agnew. Twenty-two punts had been recorded; The various offensive lines had allowed 21 preseason sacks; Only 17 of 60 third-down attempts during exhibitions -- 28.3 percent -- had been converted successfully. Most pockets of optimism were firmly in the cautious camp.
Then the lights went on for real, Chiefs 28, Jags 2 happened, and the happy wagon was off, rolling into history.
Which is a nice way of saying Packers 34, Andy Gang 14 at Lambeau Field was largely no harm, no foul, and a lot of rain. It all sort of depends on which half of the glass you want to look at.
Observation Deck: Kansas City from ESPN
Quarterback Tyler Bray blew his opportunity to secure the coaches' confidence. There had been plenty of discussion about Bray's potential to unseat veteran Chase Daniel as the top backup to Alex Smith. That conversation ended with Bray completing 8 of 15 passes for 116 yards with one touchdown and one interception. This game was typical of what we've seen from Bray throughout the preseason. He displayed his tremendous arm strength on some plays, then made poor decisions on others, including the interception tossed to Packers cornerback Jarrett Bush in the second quarter.
AFC Preview For 2014 NFL Season from The Miami Herald
Outlook: Kansas City was one of the great stories of last season, starting 9-0 after winning just two games the season before. Two wins in their final seven (against nonplayoff teams) tempers things heading into this season.

NOTS
The Chiefs: Many fancied them a year ago with Andy Reid coming over and having several Pro Bowlers on the roster. A 9-0 start was great, but 2-5 the rest of the way didn't evoke much support from the public this time around. Kansas City opened at 25-1 to win it all, but have ascended as high as 65-1 in some parlours.
