Matt Cassel Deserves No Boos

Everyone here remembers Matt Cassel. Everyone remembers the horrible throws, the weak to moderate arm strength, the turnovers (all 32 INT over his three years) and we all remember the losses. I was not a member of the AP community at that time, but I can only imagine what it was like on this sports blog. I bet it was the first and only time everyone agreed on what we needed to do at QB. While those times were bad, Matt Cassel shouldn't be booed in his return to Arrowhead.

Cassel came to us with a lot of upside. I for one was extremely optimistic about what a winner could bring to the team. That first year was rough. Cassel had 16 TDs to 16 INTs that year and we went 4-11. No one knew who Cassel was at that point. Was he the player that took over for Tom and guided his team to what should have been the playoffs? Or was he the below average QB that threw a lot of INTs?

We thought we had something in 2010. He was a pro-bowler and took us to the playoffs. He showed us what Bowe could do, and did his best to give Charles enough running room. The high didn't last for long. 2011 and 2012 were the worst years of my Chiefs fandom. Cassel was a large part of that. It wasn't all his fault. It wasn't his fault Charles tore his ACL. It wasn't his fault we had bad coaching and a bad FO. His play was his fault though. He was a bad QB during those two years, but he never quit.

Every week we would all see #7 trot onto the field, truly believing that he could win us that game. He gave his all for the Kansas City Chiefs. His all wasn't good enough. Not by a long shot, but never the less, he fought.

Lastly, Matt was and is a good person. Many may remember in January 2012 when he alerted a neighbor that her house was on fire, going so far as trying to enter the house to make sure she made it out. When she called him a "hero", his response was that the firefighters were the heroes. He did work in children's hospitals while here in KC. He helped rebuild Joplin, along with many other NFL community projects. A man like that doesn't deserve to be hated.

So for his return to Arrowhead, lets tip our hats and give the man a cheer, because he deserves at least that much.
