Quarterback Concerns: Would the Chiefs let history repeat itself?

In looking at the chiefs quarterback situation, should we resign Alex Smith or Wait it out, I had a thought to look back a recent example of when a team decided to play it out to his contract year. Joe Flacco is a prime example of a quarterback on a team that was a similar setup personnel wise to the Chiefs. Good defense with a good running back and one or two potential receiving options. While comparing Flacco to Smith is questionable, their numbers in the previous season before entering their contract year are very similar.

Take this with the obvious that the ravens went on to win the Superbowl and Flacco was the MVP but to say that the Chiefs couldn't build off the success of last year and push deeper into the playoffs would be an underestimation in my opinion. Would it be worth it to wait and provide Smith more leverage in negotiations if he produces anything similar to what Flacco did? I'm not so sure. Just curious to what you guys think. Thanks
