Kansas City Chiefs cap space nears $10 million post-Brandon Flowers

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The KC Chiefs now have $9.7 million in cap space after the release of Brandon Flowers.

Was money a factor in the release of Brandon Flowers? Of course it was. Now we know just how much of a factor.

According to NFLPA records, the Chiefs had $2,632,465 in cap space before the release of Flowers last Friday. Now that the move has been processed, the NFLPA puts the Chiefs cap space at $9,712,465. A difference of just over $7 million.

The Chiefs cap space ranks them 14th in the NFL right now, per NFLPA records. The Jaguars lead the league with $28 million while the Saints have just $1.7 million.

That's a significant uptick in the usually dead time of June for the Chiefs.

What can the Chiefs do with that money?

Extensions. Lookin' at you, Justin Houston and / or Alex Smith. The Chiefs are said to be talking to both of them about new deals. Or there could be other extensions in the works.

Roster cuts. Before the season begins, teams trim their rosters from 90 to 53 players, which puts a lot of players out on the street. The Chiefs now have the cap space to be players at that time of year if they so choose.

Sit and wait. Good players are released during the season for lots of different reasons. Not every team has loads of cap space sitting around to sign them.
