Kansas City Chiefs first week of OTAs is over: What did we learn?

USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs first week of OTAs is over. What did we learn?

The Kansas City Chiefs continue on in the third phase of the offseason program, which includes some more 11-on-11 drills but still no live contact. The Chiefs wrapped up their first week of OTAs, which included all the rookies and veterans.

Let's take a look at what we learned from the first week of Chiefs OTAs.

Offseason workouts begin: April 21
Rookie minicamp: May 24-26
OTAs: May 27-29, June 3-5, June 10-13
Mandatory Minicamp: June 17-19

We looked at the best Chiefs position battles right now.

Brandon Flowers and Justin Houston did not show up to the first week of OTAs. For Houston, the speculation is that it's related to his contract, which has one year remaining on it. No word on why Flowers is out but some are wondering about his future with the team at this point. He's still working out and Marcus Cooper is replacing him.

Andy Reid addressed the absence of Flowers and Houston.

Alex Smith's contract talks are still a thing. Mrs. Smith even chimed in.

Eric Fisher is not participating with his offseason shoulder injury. Donald Stephenson, presumed to be the starting right tackle, has taken his place for now on the left side while J'Marcus Webb and tryout player Ryan McKee saw time at right tackle.

Travis Kelce is another one who isn't out there. See the full list of players not participating here.

Junior Hemingway is getting the first look at slot receiver.

At right guard, Rishaw Johnson and Jeff Linkenbach have been splitting reps.

Andy Reid talked about LeBron James.

Jamaal Charles ... still really good.

Dee Ford has gotten some first team snaps with Houston out.

Some Chiefs got new numbers, including Sean Smith who went from No. 27 to No. 21 (Dunta Robinson's old number) and Dee Ford who is now wearing No. 55, the college number of Derrick Thomas.
