Kansas City Chiefs' Aaron Murray says it's all about getting reps

Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

Kansas City Chiefs fifth round pick Aaron Murray says the three-day rookie minicamp was huge for him because it let him get a lot of reps.

Competition is good for everyone but one reason I am not a fan of competition at the quarterback position is because you're essentially splitting a finite number of reps available for each player. If I'm picking a quarterback, I want him to have the most reps as possible in a practice environment before stepping in to play.

The Chiefs don't have a competition at the starting quarterback position -- hey, Alex Smith! -- but they do have one lower on the depth chart. Aaron Murray, the Chiefs fifth round pick, participated in the Chiefs rookie minicamp last Saturday through Monday. Asked about the importance of those three days of minicamp, Murray said it was all about getting reps.

"[These three days] really gave us a chance as rookies for it to be all about us, to get out there and get a lot of reps. The way you get better in any offense, especially at the quarterback position, is just getting reps, reps, reps, reps and reps. Repping the plays out, seeing new defenses, seeing how certain plays work against certain coverages and certain blitzes.

"The way you get better in any offense, especially at the QB position, is just getting reps, reps, reps, reps and reps."  -Aaron Murray

"The more reps you get the better, and like I said, this was all about us. We got a lot of reps, a lot of looks and a lot of tape to go back and study now."

With Alex Smith and Chase Daniel at the top of the depth chart, it looks like Murray will be competing with Tyler Bray for the No. 3 spot. Heck, maybe Murray or Bray could play so well they're pushing Daniel for the No. 2 spot. The Chiefs will be able to let Murray and Bray go at it all offseason, probably into training camp. It will be that month of training camp in August, and the way those reps are divvied up, that will have a significant impact on whether it's Murray or Bray (or both?) who makes the team.

You can tell we're obsessed with quarterbacks in Kansas City when the No. 3 job is shaping up to be one of the better competitions of the summer.
