The football nerd in me can no longer bear this ennui we have named "off-season". It's getting so bad that I might go watch my little brother run two-a-day practices for his high school team. If not for my recently-acquired winged scapula, I might even join him. It's 113 days until the first Chiefs game of 2014 (no, I'm not counting preseason games). That's 2,712 hours. 162,720 minutes. 9,763,200 seconds. A really. Long. Time.
So, I've decided to write another FanPost challenging other AP members to come up with a scheme as if they were named defensive coordinator. I want you to leave your ideas in the comments below (mine will shortly follow the posting of this write-up). Specifically, I want you to include Dee Ford, our recently drafted first-round reach/DT clone/Tamba backup. You can include Phillip Gaines, the Chiefs' other defensive draftee, if you want. The rules follow:
*Use MS Paint/whatever to create a drawing showing the alignments of your defensive players. This includes the technique "shades" for defensive linemen/walked-up linebackers.
*Describe which players are lined up where in the formation and why.
*Detail in which situations this formation/package will be used. For example, I thought up a nickel defense for use primarily on obvious passing downs.
Much of the buzz around Dee Ford centers on what role he will play in Bob Sutton's defense. Some argue that he will primarily be a backup to Tamba Hali and Justin Houston. Others contend that Ford can be developed into an every-down player who will share the field with Houston and Hali. Everyone agrees that you can never have enough pass rush. As always, only use players currently on the Chiefs' roster, and don't forget to include Ford. Have fun!
