Despite limping into the playoffs and getting an upset win over the Bengals, the Chargers ultimately fell to their division rival Denver. The team achieved this with a resurgence of Philip Rivers and the offense. The San Diego offense was, once again, the strong point of the team. This selection is determined the same way that most draft decisions are made - need versus value.
To challenge for the division title, San Diego must counter the Denver Broncos strong passing attack. Ranking 29th in passing defense, the Bolts weakness is glaring. San Diego could use any star player on defense outside of free safety. Cornerback, pass rusher, and nose tackle take the highest priority. Having said that, the best player left on the board is inside linebacker .J. Mosley. While ILB is not one of the team's top needs, the best player available must be considered.
The Bengals just picked Kony Ealy, so any of the remaining pass rushers would be considered a reach. The same could be said for the top remaining nose tackle prospects Ra'Shede Hageman and Louis Nix. Cornerback Bradley Roby's stock took a hit recently with his guilty plea to OVI. Kyle Fuller is also available, and offers a quality player at a position of need.
Mosley, Hageman, Nix, Roby, and Fuller round out the prospects being considered, but this decision comes down to taking the best available player or drafting for need. All things considered, the Chargers select ...
Virginia Tech CB Kyle Fuller
Fuller has good size at 6' and 190 pounds. Fuller provides scheme versatility because he can play zone and off man coverage, as well as having good route recognition and ball skills. He gives the Chargers a cornerback that will fit the current defense well and provides potential for growth.
