The Time is Drawing Near

With the NFL draft fast upon us, I find myself hoping Dorsey is in tune with my thoughts. So, conventional wisdom has us taking a WR in the first round. I'm OK with that, and don't really have a preferrance for Cooks, Lee, or Beckham. I originally thought a DE was our most glaring need, but I guess if the brass are OK with Walker, then I'm OK with that. However, it is time to take the bull by the tail and face the most important issue! This team has a serious salary cap problem. With Houston, Berry, and Smith waiting in the wings for either a well-deserved lucrative contract from the Chiefs, or a lucrative contract from another team because we can't afford to pay them, Doirsey needs to figure out how to free up some serious money. The most sensible option I can see is to release Tamba Hali after next season. Before we get around to taking that drastic step, we should be sure we have a replacement for Hali in house. Therefore, I'm reasonably certain that we must draft an OLB no later than round three in next month's draft. I have no serious opinion on who this OLB should be, but I strongly feel that we must take one with our third round pick.

So...what would I like for our draft to look like? Well....first, under the guise of "Conventional Wisdom"; First round, Cook, Lee, or Beckham; an upgrade at #2 WR would really help our offense, and a polished WR should have an immediate impact. Round 3. See above. Murphy, Tripp, or Bradford could be a good pick here. Round 4. We are in the same division as some guy named Manning, and that guy Rivers. Another CB would look good here; Chris Davis or Walt Aikens, perhaps? Fifth round. Now it is time for an OL. Wesley Johnson, Anthony Steen, or Duvernay-Tardif, maybe? Sixth round. Best, Player, Available.

Want an alternate scenario? Perhaps we should go straight for the OLB (especially if we can swing a trade down a few slots and pick up an extra pick in round 2 or 3)? Our first pick, Van Noy or Telvin Smith? Maybe get an OL in the 3rd (Billy Turner?) In the 4th round, get a WR like Herron. I've seen some mocks that have us taking a guard in the first. I just don't see that happening. It's just not "the Packer way". I've also seen at least one mock with us takig an OT. That would be truly disasterous. We'd be admitting we screwed up royally in last year's draft.
