Down the Rabbit Hole called the 2014 NFL Draft

The Kansas City Chiefs could be content to stand firm in the 2014 NFL Draft and select who they believe is the best player with the 23rd pick, but I do not believe that will happen. The Chiefs are in the prime spot for trading back in the draft, all while filling holes on the roster with quality players. This is how I see the top 3 spots of the draft panning out:

1.Blake Bortles QB UCF

2.Jake Matthews/Greg Robinson OT Texas A&M/Auburn

3. Johnny Manziel QB Texas A&M

What happens at 4 can alter the entire landscape of the draft, but this is my guess. With the 4th pick in the draft the Browns will select Sammy Watkins and this is where the madness begins.

If the Browns select Watkins (which I believe they will), they will undoubtably select a signal caller later in the first round or use that early second round pick on Derek Carr. The only problem with that logic is that I don't think Carr will be available at 26. The reason being is that some other QB hungry team will negotiate to move up before them or take Carr before 26.

The list of teams that I believe could use a QB (rated from position of need to could use)and will select one in this years draft is as follows:

The browns are the most needy, but only slightly more than the Raiders. I am not sold on Matt Schaub being the savior of the Oakland Raiders. They too will have to draft a young signal caller to groom behind Schaub. The Bucs and head coach Lovie Smith have stated that they too would look for another signal caller to go along with Josh McCown and Mike Glennon. The Bengals have a plethora of talent, but it seems like Andy Dalton is holding them back, they might draft a QB and give Dalton one more year to prove himself. Carson Palmer is a good Quarterback (at times), but he is in the twilight of his career. I could see the Cardinals drafting his replacement. And last but not least the New York Jets. I know they have Vick and Smith, but Vick is getting old and Geno Smith may not be the answer.

Now with all that being said, let continue with this mock draft of mine.

1.Blake Bortles QB UCF

2.Matthews/Robinson OT Texas A&M/Auburn

3.Johnny Manziel QB Texas A&M

4.Sammy Watkins WR Clemson

5.Jadeveon Clowney DE South Carolina

6.Khalil Mack DE Buffalo

7.Matthews/Robinson OT Texas A&M

8.Teddy Bridgewater QB Louisville

9.Mike Evans WR Texas A&M

10.Justin Gilbert CB Oklahoma St

11.Darqueze Dennard CB Michigan St

12. Taylor Lewan OT Michigan

13.Ha-Ha Clinton Dix S Alabama

14.Aaron Donald DT Pittsburgh

15.Eric Ebron TE UNC

16.Calvin Prior S Louisville

17.Marquise Lee/Brandin Cooks WR USC/Oklahoma St

18.Marquise Lee/Brandin Cooks WR USC/Oklahoma St

19.Zack Martin OT Notre Dame

20.RaShede Hageman DT Minnesota

21.Anthony Barr DE/OLB UCLA

22.Dee Ford DE/OLB Auburn

This is where things can work out for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Of the next 17 picks (by my calculations) there will be 6 teams that could use their selection on a QB (Bengals,Browns,Broncos,Browns,Raiders, and the Bucs). Not to mention that 11 teams total could be looking at drafting a new signal caller (Bengals, Browns, Bucs, Raiders, Cowboys, Jets, Broncos, Cardinals, Bears, Rams, and Pittsburgh). The one QB left on the board will be Derek Carr. This creates a unique situation for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Ruling out the Broncos and the Raider, viable trade partners would be the Browns, Bengals, Bucs, and Cardinals. I do not think the Chiefs would swap picks with the Cardinals, as they are too low in the draft to really offer anything substantial. The Bengals can be ruled out as they are in BPA mode and will probably selected a signal caller later in the draft. I think the Chiefs will reach out to the Browns in this scenario.

Swap the 23rd pick for the 26th and 35th pick. They will do this because A. There is no way they are levaing the 1st round without a QB, B. They filled a bunch of needs with some solid signings in free agency, and C. They know that other teams will be interested in moving up to get Carr. So teams like the Packers, Eagles, Chargers, Bengals, and Chiefs will be listening to offers.

If that trade happens my Mock Chiefs Draft will be as follows:

26. Jace Amaro TE Texas Tech

35.Odell Beckham Jr./Kelvin Benjamin WR LSU/FSU

87.Trai Turner OG LSU

124. Devin Street WR Pittsburgh

163. Brock Vereen S/CB Minnesota

193. Donald Hawkins OT Texas

200. Silas Redd RB USC

Jace Amaro is the security Blanket that Alex Smith needs. A strong WR to compliment Dwayne Bowe, wether it be Odell Beckham Jr. or Kelvin Benjamin, will dramatically improve the offense. Trai Turner is a good young prospect on the offensive line. Devin Street is a WR that can replace Donnie Avery. Brock Vereen is my pick for sleeper in this years draft. Good tackler, good instincts, decent hands, and good closing speed. The rest are depth picks. Let me know what you think.
