New Chiefs CB Chris Owens isn't sure what his role is yet

Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports

The KC Chiefs latest free agent signing came last weekend with defensive back Chris Owens, a cornerback formerly of the Falcons, Dolphins and Browns. The connection to Kansas City is Emmitt Thomas, who coached Owens while with the Atlanta Falcons in 2009.

Owens, who played the Chiefs each of the last two seasons, talked with the KC media on a Tuesday conference call and said it was a "no-brainer" to sign with the Chiefs with the Emmitt Thomas connection. Owens also said he made two free agents visits to Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay before signing a one-year deal with the Chiefs.

At 5'9, Owens is shorter than most of the cornerbacks the Chiefs have signed in the Andy Reid and John Dorsey regime.

"It's only March now so roles haven't been defined yet," Owens said when asked about his role in Kansas City. "I'm sure coach Andy Reid and coach Bob Sutton are going to figure that out. You still have the draft. It's still early, you just don't know yet."

Owens said he's comfortable in the slot and outside as well as press coverage and off. "It's familiar to me," he said.

One interesting stat is that he had three sacks last season (as the KC Star's Terez Paylor noted on the conference call).

"Coach dialed my number up a couple of times," Owens said. "I have to give credit to the guys up front. They kept the o-line and running backs as a distraction for me to come in and get a sack."

More competition for the Chiefs cornerbacks.
