COOKS VS ODB

No one knows for sure what the Chiefs will do with their first round pick but everyone can agree that WR is one of the top needs, especially if they can perform punt return duties as well. Assuming the pick is used on WR, 3 names come up that have a realistic chance of being at 23. Cooks, ODB and Lee. I get the sense most people on AP would prefer Cooks or ODB so I want compare a few numbers between those two. First off let's start with the combine and then work our way into actual play. There position rank (PR) is listed if they were in the top 15 of WR.

They are similar in size separated by 1" and 4lbs. Cooks seems to have a slight edge in speed/quickness garnering two number one performances in the class. Strength hands down goes to Cooks and was 9th in the class. This is not an end all for ODB but it would be nice for him to get a little stronger when pressed.

Now on to some stats.

Cooks has 69 more receptions, 578 more yards and doubles ODB’s TD with 8 more. I’m a huge fan of picking Cooks but when I dug a little deeper these stats are a bit deceiving. Take a look at the chart below showing a game by game analysis against the 2013 ranking of pass yards per game along with how many passing attempts were made.

Oregon State slung the pigskin 22 more times a game. With LSU throwing 24 times a game it’s almost like Cooks got 2 seasons for 1 to pad his stats when comparing against ODB. When it comes to strength of schedule ODB has the huge advantage by 33 teams. Oregon State’s 84 average is pretty bad with 5 teams over 100. Remember there is only 125 FBS teams.

What’s more concerning is this.

The games in red I think we can all agree on are not what we want in a first round WR pick. I threw in Furman and UAB because for one it’s Furman, ?, and second I don’t think being 115/125 in the FBS should be able to pad your stats when looking to take a WR in the first. You can do this with Cooks as well but he seemed to be more consistent in every game. Starting to wonder if waiting on WR is the right choice.
