In House Options At Gaurd

Now some people may look at the fact that neither Jon Asomoah and Geoff Swartz will be back as being bad things however lets examine, how saving money in salary cap and building younger quicker line can benefit the chiefs.

The Offensive tackles are pretty concrete, although the sides they will play is not. Many people fail to remember that, Donald Stephenson was one of the original combine freaks at the combine he ran a 4.94 forty, verticle of 35 however only did the bench 19 times. These characteristics showed he had explosiveness and weighed 313 but was not strong enough to be day one starter, he demonstrated this to a T on the field as well. Since then he has bulked up and shown he can play effectively on either side of the line and outplayed his counterpart and rookie first overall pick Eric Fisher. Fisher was a bit overpowered at times this season, especially since injuries hindered him early on. However, later in the season showed why he was drafted number one. I believe with a full off season getting stronger and completely heal, he has a shot to be one of the better offensive lineman in the league. So with that assumption our bookends are set. The only unknown is which plays left and which plays right. This will be up to Andy Reid, I would assume no final decision has been made and this will be sorted out in training camp.

Now we come to the middle of the line, in loosing Jon Asomoah and Geoff Swartz we loose two players who can play and start in the league. Jon Asomoah had a rough year but id expect him to bounce back next year with the Falcons, just a prediction but i think it will be among their best signings. Geoff had an awesome bounce back year this year, and when he took over at gaurd for the Chiefs the offense was able to click and really flourish. So now what? What could we possibly do without either of these guys? There is one outside the box possiblitiy many chiefs fans may know Eric Kush. The chiefs were really high on him and he played well at center against the Chargers in the final game he was quick and was able to move laterally very well, however he too was a bit weak to play consistently in the NFL. I think With an offseason he is one guy to look at taking over at center and moving Rodney Hudson to guard.

Some of you may assume this is crazy but ill also remind you when he came out he played Guard at Florida State, He was billed as a center, guard position player when he came out of college. sliding him next to Kush would give us our offensive line for years. Also when you look at the evolution of football and our offense as a whole you will recognize that a quick passing game, screens and outside runs have been staples of this offense. With this lineup it would give the Chiefs the ability to execute and get more big plays from the offensive lineman getting down field.
