As John Dorsey and Andy Reid begin the task of building the 2014 KC Chiefs roster, I see many possible free agent WR's that could be targeted once free agency begins. While many think that J Maclin is the answer, I for one doubt we can offer the kind of money that he will be seeking. Count me as one Chief follower that would love to see Maclin in a Chiefs uniform. However, I see a couple of guys who might be a little more affordable for the Chiefs to consider.
1- Julian Edleman- This guy is a great route runner, and has the mental capacity to pick up any offense quickly. He isn't a field stretcher, but has dependable hands and has played for a winner in New England. I could see Edleman becoming A. Smith's guy on third downs, a Welker type guy. We need more guys who know how to get separation, Edleman fits that description. If we could sign Edleman, we could then look for a speed guy via the draft in 3-4 round and use our 1st round pick on help at FS.
2- Golden Tate- This is another guy who obviously knows about winning. Tate is very under rated and is young enough to be a mainstay in the Chiefs offense for years to come. While his numbers aren't mind boggling, remember that he played in a offense that plays ball control, smash mouth style football. I see Tate as a guy who is still trending upward, and has just began to reach his potential.
Two other free agent WR's that could also be on Dorseys radar are Emmanuel Sanders, and James Jones. Jones has played in a west coast offense in Green bay, but missed several games with a knee injury this past season. Jones is a great red zone target, but many wonder if he was just a product of a great system, and a great QB. Due to his knee injury last year, Jones probably lost some of his bargaining power. One last thing on Jones, he did not require surgery and came back before the season ended and showed that he should be 100% healthy by training camp.
Looking at the Chiefs roster, the time to win is now. Waiting on a rookie WR to develop just doesn't seem to be the best strategy. I would rather we find a proven WR via free agency so we can then look for explosive athletes for the defensive side of the ball, and perhaps a speed WR in round 3 or 4.
