Over-thinking the need to draft a Coverage Linebacker.

I know a lot of you are sick of hearing me harp about the need to get Berry out of the box to play a more traditional safety role because a lot of us feel he will be a bigger help to struggling Corners and/or a struggling Free Safety . I have even agreed with some of you that want to keep Berry as a LB full time unless we get into a dime package and to draft a new SS for that open spot . While there is some merit to that point of view, Berry is only 211 lbs and is a liability on running downs. Late in the season, he was targeted and specifically run at, because at his size, he cannot withstand the blocks of offensive lineman on a constant basis.

I have thrown out names like Craig Loston, who Chiefs scouts were high on at the Senior Bowl according to Terez Paylor, and Telvin Smith who is a Linebacker that is the size of a Strong Safety. Then something occurred to me this morning. I remembered watching the first game against Denver and being amazed where they had Commings lined up. He was damn close to the LOS and he made a big hit on Denver player at the LOS. Then I looked at Commings size on the KC website. The guy is 6-0, 223 lbs, and runs a 4.41 40. Commings is only 7 lbs lighter than Akeem Jordan.

I think Sutton may have wanted Berry in the secondary the entire time this past season but when Commings got hurt on the first day of training camp and then couldn't get healthy, those plans went out the window. We brought in Ron Parker to compete with Demps at the nickel/dime SS spot, but it didn't help matters.

If Commings can stay healthy this season, I think he will be playing that linebacker hybrid spot in nickel, instead of Berry. If he can gain 5 to 10 more pounds and keep that weight sustainable, we may have ourselves a coveted 3 down Coverage LB.
