With free agency (almost) around the corner, it’s time to make a wish list for the Chiefs. I’m hoping money can be freed up to do some important shopping for a few critical needs (without losing the free agents we need to retain).
First up: Wide receivers. There are several good receivers on the list, but few that are both likely to leave their current teams and still somewhat affordable for us. At the top of the list is Jeremy Maclin. He is fast; runs routes well; and if he can catch the damn ball he'll be a major upgrade. Two others I wouldn’t mind seeing in Chiefs red are Kenny Britt and Riley Cooper. Neither are burners, but both have good hands and the ability to get open. Any of these three would have little difficulty displacing Dwayne Bowe at the #1 spot.
I think everyone here would agree we need safety help. Neither Lewis nor Demps should be allowed to play at this position in anything other than a dire emergency ever again—anywhere! I think the best candidates in free agency at safety are Donte Whitner and James Ihedigbo, if their respective teams are willing to part with them (and we can afford one of them). I’d feel a lot better about cutting Lewis/Demps and developing Sommers if we have one of these vets starting most of the time.
Finally, if there are any coins left in the purse, it might be worthwhile to take a close look at Charles Tillman and Alterraun Verner at cornerback. Both are excellent players from teams that may be willing to let them go. Chicago doesn’t seem to know how to use Tillman effectively any more and Tennesee looks to be rebuilding, again.
I'm sure the draft also contains some good prospects for these positions, but I'm not able to follow college ball much, so I don't really know who would be good fits for our team. And, I think this team is just short of a few critical pieces to return to--and go farter in--the playoffs next year. The only big question mark, due to injury and lack of playing time this year, is Maclin, so if the money is there, let's get this fixed. Otherwise, it's just too likely that next year will be another BOHICA.
