I have been a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs for 42 years. The playoff loss to the Colts was by far the worst I have seen in Chiefs history. After reviewing what happened to the 1992 Houston Oilers team after their epic playoff game collapse to the Buffalo Bills the future does not look good for our Kansas City Chiefs.
The great irony of all of this is that the last Chiefs last playoff game win came against that same Oilers team that owns the worst playoff collapse in NFL history. The Oilers franchise never recovered from that playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills.
After the titanic collapse to the Bills the Oilers fired defensive coordinator Jim Eddy and defensive backs coach Pat Thomas. The new hire would be Buddy Ryan as DC. That did not help as the Super Bowl favorite Oilers would collapse under the mighty charge of our Joe Montana led Kansas City Chiefs the following season in the playoffs. Following the loss to the Chiefs, Bud Adams would dismantle the team and later they moved to Tennessee. Defensive coordinator Jim Eddy moved on to win Super Bowls as a defensive assistant with the Dallas Cowboys, but he never got a DC job again. The Chiefs have yet to win a playoff game since beating the Oilers in the last playoff game in the Astrodome.
The facts are that turmoil of epic playoff losses carry over for years. The 1992-1993 Houston Oilers teams and the 1971 Christmas day Chiefs team are examples of how epic playoff game losses can psychologically damage a franchise and its fanbase over long periods of time. The loss to Colts this weekend by the Chiefs will be talked about for years to come. The Chiefs now have 2 demons to exorcise from their playoff history now. Not able to win a playoff game and the possibility of an epic collapse if they hold a lead.
Can Clark Hunt, John Dorsey, Andy Reid and the Chiefs players carry these burdens and recover from the negative playoff history they have inherited or added. We already know the 1992 Oilers could not recover from the collapse against the Bills. Like Jim Eddy, Bob Sutton may never get another DC job outside of Kansas City. Andy Reid may never see another head coaching job if the Chiefs do not prosper in the near future. A Super Bowl appearance or victory is the only thing that can erase the stench of this Colts loss with this regime that will heal this team and its fanbase.
Chiefs fans have endured so much pain over the last 40 or so years and it appears there may be more pain on the way. If Clark Hunt, Dorsey, Andy Reid and players did not know the pain Chiefs fans have endured over the years they do now after the epic collapse against the Colts.
I am a Chiefs fan for life and will always support them. I hope this epic loss to the Colts strengthens the franchise and pray it does not crumble like the 1992 Houston Oilers, but history says if will be very difficult to recover.
GO CHIEFS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
