What a season! Granted, last Saturdays gut wrenching 45-44 loss to the Colts has been a tough pill to swallow. However, we Chief fans have a lot to look forward to. We finally have our QB for the immediate future, and we have a fine stable of runners led by all-world RB Jamaal Charles, and Knile Davis . Our young offensive line grew by leaps and bounds as the year progressed. We certainly have the foundation for a up and coming defense led by young stars Justin Houston, Eric Berry, and Donatri Poe. And I say without hesitation that our Head Coaching position is in good hands with Andy Reid.
Remember, this time last year we were a 2-14 team trying to put the pieces back together after the Jovan Belcher tragedy. And our QB depth chart was led by Matt Cassel! So in many instances, the Chiefs are well ahead of were they were last year. Granted, its obvious that we need some help at the WR position, and finding a competent safety to go alongside Eric Berry is crucial. Other team issues is the B Albert situation, and the need to resign Schwartz (a no brainer) and/or Asamoah. There are several other free agents to be like McCluster, Demps, Abdullah, and TJAX.
While its certain that some of the players mentioned above will not be with the Chiefs in 2014, free agency and the draft will provide Dorsey and Reid an opportunity to bring in players that Reid needs to fit the system. I could see the Chiefs drafting a Safety in the first round, or a WR for that matter (Hello Sammy Watkins). Jeremy Maclin is a possible free agent who is still young and familiar with Reids offense. More offensive line help will be needed with the likely departure of B Albert, but I feel like Stephenson and Fisher are more than ready to handle the bookend duties. A swing tackle will probably be on Reids wish list this offseason. Drafting/signing another defensive end will also be important as TJAX is likely gone too.
If I had to make a shopping list for the 2014 Chiefs, it would look something like this:
SAFETY- Obviously, K Lewis is doo-doo.
WR- Bowe is getting some age, and no other receiver on the roster is even a legit #2
DE- With TJAX likely departure, its time to move on and find a more explosive end.
OLB- I know we have Houston and Hali, but father time is undefeated, and Hali is getting some age as well.
CB- can never have enough guys who can cover, especially in todays pass happy era.
OL- The potential loss of B Albert is gonna sting, a swing tackle to back up Stephenson and Fisher looks likely.
