Kansas City Chiefs replace their special teams assistant coach

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The KC Chiefs hired former Missouri running back Brock Olivo as their special teams assistant coach.

The Kansas City Chiefs are making a coaching staff addition. According to reports from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the Kansas City Star, the KC Chiefs are adding Brock Olivo to their coaching staff as the special teams assistant under Dave Toub.

The connection between the two goes back to Missouri. Olivo played at Missouri as a running back in the 1990s while Chiefs special teams coach Dave Toub was on the strength staff.

The Chiefs lost their previous special teams assistant, Kevin O'Dea, who agreed a few weeks ago to become the Tampa Bay Buccaneers strength coordinator. O'Dea's exit and Olivo's arrival appears to be the only change to the coaching staff so far (that we know of).

Olivo played running back at Missouri then joined the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent where he played on special teams. From there he played some in Italy.

Most recently, Olivo was the running backs coach and special teams assistant at Coastal Carolina, better known as Tyler Thigpen's alma mater.

The Chiefs had one of the top special teams units in the league, ranking third overall by one set of metrics. O'Dea worked mostly with the kickers and punters so I'll be curious to see where Olivo's focus is.
